so as long as someone else is who likes to wear different colors is doing bad things as well then it isn't worth discussing or it isn't a problem? Honestly, I’m not even sure what you are saying anymore. I acknowledged the hypocrisy of it. But the hypocrisy doesn’t invalidate the underlying recommendations or ideas. If that’s what you got from the article or if that was what the author was trying to convey, that’s a really terrible argument and in no way a “valid point”. If I say that inciting political violence is wrong and then incite political violence, that doesn’t suddenly mean inciting political violence is right, it just makes me a hypocrite. If the discussion you intend is “were they hypocritical?”, I already agreed, so I’m not certain where the discussion goes from there. But your broader point was that it’s really concerning when people treat public or elected officials as messianic, and I agree. That’s especially a problem we are seeing right now in the current election and is deeply concerning, but I have a sneaking suspicion you are more or less okay with it in this particular instance. Nothing i said references absolving any of the lunatics who run or would like to run our various asylums, or the messianic followings they for some reason have. So, based on nothing I said, you now have a "sneaking suspicion" that I am ok with one or both of the main candidates for president and their most fervent followers? That strikes me as a very bizarre conclusion to reach. Is the point of your comment "but that hypocrisy pales in comparison to what we’ve been offered by politicians in the intervening 4 years." to say that the problem is much worse than what i posted because others are doing similar and arguably crazier and more hypocritical things? if so then we agree. Maybe this is on me, but when i read BUT at the beginning there, it immediately sounds like a form of "what about-ism" where you minimize a legitimate problem with people whose actions you might not like in this instance but who are aligned with your favorite color and as a result, you assume you will usually agree with their ideas and actions in other situations. You then try to shift the conversation to discuss people whose ideas you don't tend to agree with instead. If you can't bare to hold the people who wear your favorite color accountable when they, to put it lightly, step way out of line (and you agreed that this is way out of line) then how are you any better than the people you disagree with? I believe that it cant get much worse than locking people in their homes, forcing people to die alone without their loved ones, destroying businesses and robbing a generation of children of a big part of their youth while putting them - especially the poorest in our society - at a lasting disadvantage educationally, in exchange for benefits that the people making these decisions obviously did not even believe in. My point in sharing this to the discussion is obviously to attempt to bring some sanity to those who read this thread, many of which were and appear to continue to be cheerleaders for those policies and would cheer for them again despite the benefits of hindsight. While I can't imagine what would or has risen to that level of malfeasance, we can agree to disagree on whether or not other people have done worse in "the intervening 4 years." I can not, however, see how anyone can say that so many things have happened that are so much worse (especially within the thread topic of Covid 19) than the horrific outcomes wrought by people like Varmas, Newsom and many, many others that it doesn't even merit attention because we are busy with much more important and troubling issues. Is that not the point you are making in dismissing my post?

Dr. Vinay Prasad delivered a virtual lecture to the Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences on Feb. 17 following GSBS Dean Daniel Jay’s disavowal of one of Prasad’s blog posts, which Jay characterized as antisemitic. Several GSBS students and faculty objected to Tufts offering Prasad a platform to speak in light of his blog posts and other public comments about COVID-19, which they argue undermine public health and inappropriately invoke Nazism by comparing current mask and vaccine requirements to totalitarianism in Nazi Germany. www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2022/03/controversial-oncologist-dr-vinay-prasad-disavowed-by-dean-lectures-to-gsbsIn the interest of trying to be somewhat fair, I did read the article (after looking up the author and seeing many of his troubling past statements). It wasn’t terribly compelling, and only really offered a “can you believe these hypocrites” critique without much else. I can’t really argue with the hypocrisy of some the people mentioned, but that hypocrisy pales in comparison to what we’ve been offered by politicians in the intervening 4 years. so as long as someone else is who likes to wear different colors is doing bad things as well then it isn't worth discussing or it isn't a problem?

Several GSBS students and faculty objected to Tufts offering Prasad a platform to speak in light of his blog posts and other public comments about COVID-19, which they argue undermine public health and inappropriately invoke Nazism by comparing current mask and vaccine requirements to totalitarianism in Nazi Germany. Prior to the lecture, some faculty and students at GSBS recognized Prasad’s name from statements in his October 2021 blog post and YouTube videos comparing COVID-19-related public health restrictions to the totalitarian policies of Nazi Germany. The blog post forecasts a descent into totalitarianism spurred by the adoption of COVID-19-related public health restrictions. In the post, Prasad argues that in the context of the pandemic, democratic countries have become tolerant of government censorship and restrictions, which he says potentially paves the way to totalitarianism. www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2022/03/controversial-oncologist-dr-vinay-prasad-disavowed-by-dean-lectures-to-gsbsDr Prasad is a very loud attention seeker who quite often opines in absolute terms about subject matter in which he has little to no expertise. His views about public health are both ill informed and dangerous. Peppering his proclamations with insults does his credibility no favors. He is more interested in stoking his own ego with controversial hot takes than anything else. i agree that the insults and tone do him no favors with people who are not already inclined to agree - but that doesnt make his points any less valid

This article lays many of the problems with not just public health but government in general that were magnified during the pandemic. The scandal of people like Gavin Newsom putting cops on the beach to keep people from surfing as a flex of their power while he is attending parties and Jay Varmas, the guy in charge of draconian lockdowns in NYC hosting sex parties during the height of the lockdown he was running is awful enough but this gets at a problem that is far more problematic and deep rooted than the one or two bad actors in positions of power who are actually caught being awful people. As the closing of the piece says "What we did during the pandemic to young and healthy people was mass delusion, and it was led by incompetent, hypocritical public health officials." Power mad politicians and public officials are going to have crazy ideas but I was and continue to be the most concerned that they were greeted with massive applause akin to when Palpatine declared that he loves democracy. www.drvinayprasad.com/p/dr-jay-varmas-sex-parties-are-a-metaphor?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Here is another video. I hope she keeps them coming. It is funny how certain 'Chloe the Queen' is that Labor Day is a holiday created to be about the military. Wikipedia is right there! and they laugh at the girl who actually knows the correct answer!

The main thing it hurts is the BET attendance. UConn fans always packed that. If Gtown gets its act together, we can pull our weight and help with BET attendance again. I can't wait to be relevant and in the draw for a weekend game. Yeah - you can't replace that. 50% of the conference is invisible at the Garden. Regular Xavier, Marquette, Creighton, and Butler semifinal participants are killers. Need the five from the old guard to be good again to keep the tourney exciting. The basketball will survive but the BET will definitely suffer w/o the Huskies. The BET sold out every year when UCONN was gone and it will continue to do so if they leave.

Sigh I figured the NIL would go in this direction. CBS Sports poll of 100 plus coaches on the state of NIL in Division I men's college basketball. ➤ 77% of coaches said they've been asked for $1M-plus for a player ➤ The highest ask among those polled was $5M for a player ➤ One coach said a mid-major player averaging 5 PPG wanted $400K What they were asked for is interesting but far more interesting would be what did they pay. Any moron can ask for the moon and not get it especially in these early years where people don't know what the market will bear. 77 coaches were asked for $1M, but if only 2 are paying that much to anyone then the stat is pretty meaningless. I haven't followed it closely and maybe there are stats available to prove or disprove my impression which is - it feels like most people sign quickly, which would tell me they are getting close to what they originally ask for. Thoughts?

I wrote that on May 21. That was then, this is now. Now, we’re in no position to negotiate down. Actually, we’re not in a good position to negotiate, period. At this point, I don't see a reason to hesitate in bringing him back. He's not a good defensive player, and I would tell him he should not expect to play more than 10 minutes a game, but as a depth piece, he is useful. I cannot imagine Supreme Court has suitors banging down his door with high NIL money. It seems like this is one of those instances where it is in the incentive of both parties to meet somewhere in the middle. As an aside, this would seem to dispel the idea that Georgetown can just freely spend NIL money, otherwise, they'd just give Cook what he wants. i don't think this tells you anything about the NIL $ available. Having money in the bank does not require you to throw it around irresponsibly and to acquiesce to any demand that a player makes. By your logic, if Cook thinks he deserves $1M next year, then we should give it to him.

A month ago Cooley said he wanted to get a center and that would be it, he didn't plan to use the other spots. Of course the landscape is constantly shifting so maybe he would answer that question differently today. He also said that Cook's people were asking for a more significant raise than what Cooley was willing to offer, which is why he is out on the market looking for that deal somewhere else. Honest question, what was the forum in which these comments were made? Are you saying EC is openly telling alums/fans what certain players are looking for in terms of NIL? I guess I'm just surprised as I also assumed all the leaks and inside info was coming from an assistant or someone connected with program, not from the head coach himself. Los Angeles alumni/donor event last month with Coach and AD Reed. During his general comments to the entire group he said he needs a center and then he would be done because he does not plan to use all his scholarships. I was in a group of 3 or 4 people with Coach outside of his group remarks and he was asked if we could get Cook back. Coach spoke highly of him but said that his people were expecting a raise that was bigger than what Coach was willing to offer and thus he did not expect Cook to return. He did not put specific numbers on things, nor did he answer with specifics when asked about the NIL budget he had to work with - just saying he needed more and that Calipari's budget dwarfed ours. He segued that comment into a discussion of how much time he spends talking to lawyers about the players they represent these days. More time with lawyers in the past year than the amount of time he spent with high school coaches in the last 5 years (might have said 10) combined. He clearly would rather be talking to players and coaches than talking to lawyers.

You can fully judge the transfers until they fill the remaining spots. The portal is closed but there are surprises entered weekly. So far, pretty good with a top 25 transfer class. Ideally, they add another 5 that can start and bring Sorber along slowly. If they absolutely cannot find anyone to fill that role, they go back with Supreme. Other than that, the last 2 can be just about anybody. Maybe a shooter I don't think they will fill all 3 spots right now. It seems like the staff likes to have some flexibility to add a scholarship player if someone unexpected becomes available later in the process or even during the season. With that being said, I do hope they fill 2 of the three spots (with a big man and shooter). It is getting late and options are thin at this point, but hopefully we can find a few more players.

This is smart scheduling and a good response to the Big East's not getting a lot of teams in the tournament. Of course, when a team is good like Marquette, there's a lot of incentive to schedule this way and get a bunch of OOC wins. Scheduling is the one area where I am just not sure Cooley gets it fully. He's never scheduled strongly, and I feel like we need to be in the good November tournaments that Ewing ran away from. That new NIL-based tournament would be great, we really should go to Maui again (Providence did play there under Cooley), and the other higher profile events. As of right now, I don't believe we have one of those on the schedule at all for the future. Cooley told me last week that we are going to Maui in 28. He also said he is working on getting a west coast team on the schedule (he didnt say this year so I am assuming this is for the following year). He has known Cronin for years and his preference is to play UCLA but if that doesn't work he will go for USC, Stanford or SD State. He also said he wants to get us in a tournament this year but didn't elaborate beyond that. In response to the other post - I too would rather lose to a top 50 team than beat a team that is 200 or lower.

I may have misunderstood, but I think Cooley's comments about prospective 2025 recruiting went to the overall quality of the class he believes we will land, not just one star player. It was a good and encouraging event. The Coach is clearly busting his butt. But as he said last night, in his world, results are everything. When he was talking to me and one or two other people before his group remarks is when he referenced the 2025 player, took out his phone and said the kid had texted him while he was at this event. I think he then said 'I could have some real good news for you on that soon' I also thought this comment was interesting - he has talked to more lawyers (who represent the kids in their NIL negotiations) in just the past 2 years than the number of HS coaches he has talked in the past 10 years - or something like that.

I was at an event last night with Cooley and he said that Calipari told him what the NIL budget at Arkansas is and it is insane, more than triple what everyone says the Hoyas have to work with. When asked what ours is, he wouldn't put a number on it, he said something like 'it's fluid' or 'a moving target' or something vague like that. About the Players Era Tournament, he said he had been contacted to see if the Hoyas were interested in being a part of it, he didn't rule it out but I would be very very surprised if we ended up in that event. Unlikely that he will use all of his scholarships this year, he wants to add a center and then he might be done. Also of note - He is optimistic that he could land a big name from the class of 25 soon. Thank you for the recap, great to hear this kind of perspective - where was the event held and who were the types of people in attendance? It was in Los Angeles, local alumni were invited but it was not broadcast to all the local alums, I assume invite only went to people who had donated to athletics in some fashion. There were several development staff there and of course there were appeals to the crowd to open their check books when possible to support the program. Cooley was in SF for a similar event the day before and mentioned 5 to 10 other cities where they plan to have similar gatherings to engage with the local alums and donors.

And, Syracuse has been our biggest rival for over 40 years. So, maybe it doesn’t actually matter at all. Did you actually attend Georgetown? He did. And so did I, and i don't think the rivalry with Cuse - one of the best rivalries in the sport - would somehow become better if they started requiring that people be able to write with something other than a crayon to be admitted to "study" at their campus in southern Canada.
