No one on this roster has been the main guy or one of the main guys on a quality team. Mack may get there, Sorber will get there. But the recipe isn’t there for this year. And Cooley’s style of play doesn’t allow players who are acclimating to this level to blend in quickly. We play too slow and in the modern game where players have not played with each other as much it makes no sense not to be playing at a faster tempo. The first two games showed that playing faster led to a lot of turnovers. The difference was that the competition didn’t make us pay. Having 14 new players (Cooley said so) is not ideal for playing faster.

For me, at the moment there are 3 major issues that need to be fixed:
1.) Defense We have all noted that last year's defense was awful and unacceptable. Well guess what, the same issues are here again despite better talent and some better individual defenders. Open 3 point shooters, straight line drives, and offensive rebounds continue to be problems. I think we will get better but these issues are not new and need to be fixed to have any success.
2.) Shooting percentage yesterday 31.4 overall and 25 from 3. Players playing the guard position were 14/45. You cannot win with these types of numbers. A bad day can occur, but the shot selection was poor especially early in the shot clock. We have a more balanced attack which should help. However, there seems to be no consequences for a bad shot.
3.) The rotation at the 4. Fielder, Burks and Sorber are getting time. As an observer it's hard to tell what is expected of each of them during their time. My thoughts are Burks for defense, Fielder to stretch the floor and Sorber when we want to go big. Their time is hard to figure out and I'm worried about Fielder long term.
I've watched Cooley in Providence (my home town) for years and he is good at team building. These issues are pretty obvious so let's hope he is successful at fixes.

I think one of the defensive issues could be solved if and when one-two of the next three guards after Mack and Epps establish themselves as legitimate rotation players. This would allow subbing out one of Mack / Epps and (one hopes) decreases the time 2 guards that do not stop ball penetration well are on the court. I'm not surprised defensive rotations are not completely ironed out yet.

I rewatched the first part of the game. It was lost when we changed to a 2-3 zone and our offense got 3 point shot happy when none were going in. We should have been following JTIII’s philosophy of getting easy shots at the rim. That probably has to be our mantra. It is probably a fool’s errand to go zone against any team with better than average 3 point shooting percentages.

It’s very hard to get established in the limited minutes they’re being given, the staff has to allow them to work around mistakes
