First home game this year at CapOne. 1984 Championship Team will be honored at halftime. I'm sure they picked the date where the most players/staff could make it but man...unlikely to be many ppl in the building to honor these program legends. |

Fairfield being my other alma mater, I can tell you this team is not what they were last year, as essentially the whole roster has turned over, with only 2 main guys back from last year's 24-win team. They were crushed by almost 40 at URI on Monday night, and played 12(!) guys, as Coach Casey is trying to figure out how to put the new pieces together. Last year they were Top 50 in the country in 3pt shooting, but they opened vs URI 4-29 from deep, as their top 3 shooters from last year are not on the roster.
This year, their top player is 5'8" guard Deon Perry, a local kid from Baltimore, who transferred from Loyola MD, and who was the Patriot League's leading scorer last year. His debut was forgettable, as he had two points on 0-6 shooting (0-5 from 3), but last year he was 35% from deep on 8 attempts a game. I shudder to say, he certainly fits the mold of undersized local guard who has tortured us in the past at Cap One. Other than that I am honestly not sure what to make of this roster. There isn't a ton of size or rim protection. Stylistically, a faster tempo game is likely.
Coupled with the 1984 team celebration, I'd be surprised if Fairfield is able to stay within 15-20 points here, that is unless Perry pulls off the small guard career game we have seen over the years...

Tons to work on, and I'd like to see the full bench used as much as the next person, but I imagine the rotation might be tighter this game than the last, in preparing for ND.
A few things I really liked from game 1:
- Looking for the right play. Personally, I love a passing based offense, and I don't love having possession after possession feature a player driving into the lane and taking it up themselves. But most of those plays against Lehigh appeared to be the right play. Most of Peavy's drives into the lane were when the lane was wide open after beating his man. And in the second half that was similar for both Epps and Mack on most of their drives. For the most part, the lane was open and they only had their own man to beat. I'd like to see more passing come if the defense does collapse, but for the most part, I didn't see much of anything that looked like 2023 Spears/Murray or 2024 Epps wild drives into the lane and throwing up a prayer or getting blocked.
- One play I really liked came from Curtis Williams in the second half--he got a pass near the top of the key, squared up for a three, but as defender came flying toward him, he fired a bullet to an open Sorber under the basket, who ended up going to the line.

Hoping to see improvement in defense, especially early in the game. Limit the turnovers and get high % baskets early.

I'm confident we will come out with a more convincing showing. First game jitters are out of the way and the team saw the effort they need to defend during the closing stretches against Lehigh. Add in a hot shooting day and hopefully this one is never in doubt.

I am sure Cooley wants to get Epps/Mack combo as much gametime together ASAP, but at some point he is going to need Mulready's D when one of our small guards gets abused. I think the kid only played 5 minutes against Lehigh, but he made at least two disruptive D plays.

Mulready is coming off an injury. Expect him to see more of him as he recovers. If Mack doesn’t improve his defense from Game 1, I would be fine seeing more of Mulready.
