4-48 across both teams from 3. Total brickfest. Sounds like hoyarooter's family was manning both sides of the court. Our lack of three point shooting was the thing that struck me the most, though it is heartening to see that UVA struggled from three too. Also notable that Mack, Peavy, Epps, Burks, and Sorber all played over 30 minutes in a scrimmage. I expected that much of the first three, but surprised to see Burks and Sorber getting so much time. My guess is that that's your starting five, otherwise, why do that the last scrimmage before the season? The most surprising thing for me is Fielder only getting 10 minutes. I would not have expected that (unlesss he's dealing with injuries again, like last year).

The only surprise is the lack of Mulready whom I have heard nothing but good things over the last few weeks.

Unlike Julius he has been apart of actual five-on-five practices and that includes last weekend's scrimmage for the Hoya fans. But he has been held out of both the scrimmages involving Maryland and Virginia so there must be something the coaches don't want to chance against real opposing competition at this time.

Without knowing many details at this point, my takeaway is a very positive one. This UVA team was like a cornered animal going into the scrimmage. It had lost to a mid major opponent it was expected to smoke (which probably made them angry) and then it lost its coach. The program probably saw this as a must win from the standpoint of getting the confidence of the players up and letting the college basketball world know that the team wasn't going to slide anytime soon. I've head that the assistant coach who has taken over is a guy who doesn't play around and is tough on the players. He was going to have them mentally ready to perform. And UVA ended up going into halftime with a two-point lead, with the type of low scoring that they are known to hold opposing teams and games to. But the Hoyas bounced back and outscored them by 13 in the second half, scoring over 40 points in the process. Scrimmage or no scrimmage, doing that against UVA is tough! And the Hoyas did it despite shooting miserably from the three point line. That's impressive. That's what we as Hoya fans should walk away with.

Peavy really stepped up or this game would have looked much different. And it was done inside the arc drawing a ton of fouls. If he is ready and able to consistently take that step offensively, it raises the ceiling of the team.
I guess it is not unexpected due to the youth, but we are going to need some level of contribution from the bench. And we will need to be able to hit the 3 pointer at 3X the rate of Saturday.
Burks being the athletic rebounder that we need is a blessing.

Wish we had more proven perimeter shooting this year but have to like the length of this team from both a rebounding and a defensive perspective.

Hopefully, Cooley is recruiting the best shooter (not scorer) he can to play the 3. That we are light on skilled outside shooters is not new information.

Any other known scrimmages before the season starts? Is there a 2024-2025 Men's Basketball Media Guide that one can purchase?
They used to have them in the media room at Capital One/Verizon but have not had them there for several years.

Hoyas were much better in the 1st scrimmage. This one was pretty even with a sight UVA advantage until UVA went to the bench and Cooley really didn’t. Hoyas pulled away late to make the final score much better than what I would expect a regular season game between the 2 to look like.

Biggest takeaway from afar, assist, Sorber leading the way, that can’t happen Jeff Green led the team in game assists many times throughout his career. Turned out okay.

We need more than 7 assists period....hopefully the low number was due to all the missed shots.

Agreed, if Sorber mirrors Jeff Green, look out , we back. My thought when I saw total assists was a lot of iso ball, I’m hoping for more of a team concept

The only caveat is that in that era, John Thompson III ran a system that led to a lot of assists from his bigs/best players. It remains to be seen how Cooley will use Sorber.

Hurley is taking full advantage of this momentum, lands another good player for the 2025 class. “This momentum” meaning multiple national championships? I would hope so, the product sells itself. Winning matters. I did see Donovan Clignan is averaging 2 and 1 with Portland so he can sell getting guys in the NBA for sure
