We better get used to Luis killing us. Does he have any more years? Kid can play. Luis is a sophomore. Eep!

Well, we finished out the regular season without being totally embarrassed in the last game. Glad the guys fought and didn't just roll over this game. Fielder is going to be huge in the future. Brumbaugh is going to be a solid PG but he needs to learn how to deal with better athletes. Epps is a scorer and hopefully Cooley can reign him in next year after letting him run free this year. I pray for Styles to make the jump in his second full year playing, if he can tighten his handle he'll be dangerous. Thanks Heath, Bristol, and Mutumbo for all they've given on and off the court as Hoyas. Sorry it didn't work out better with Massoud, hopefully he enjoyed his year in DC.

Great effort, just came up short. Gotta get stops when it counts, but oh well.

A frustrating loss in a frustrating season amidst a run of frustrating seasons. In some ways, I give the team credit for staying in the game. SJU had everything to play for, and we had nothing but pride. Even so, the lack of defense is just unacceptable. SJU scored on what felt like every possession over the last 8 minutes.
I still believe that if anyone can turn this around, it’s Cooley. Even so, this season is a disappointment. He is known for doing more with less. We got close a few times, but we didn’t beat anyone of any consequence this season. There’s no blip to point to what a brighter future looks like. Oh well.

Hoya defenders are watching the ball not their man, the space they are covering, nor covering passing lanes. Almost every play there is a Johnny wide open with a Hoya watching the ball and covering an empty space. Heads need to be on swivels. Sending a check to Fox Sports for detailing exactly this with Styles watching the ball on the weakside and losing Luis who hit a wide open jumper. Not only Styles, but Epps, Ish, and Heath get caught doing this. Bristol knows how to not get burned (most of the time). Eh, I think that was coaching. Cooley had Styles helping on Soriano from the weak side since Fielder had 4 fouls and he got pinned behind him when Louis made the smart cut.

Points in paint: StJ 42 GU 24 Points of TO: StJ 17 GU 22 (nice to see this change)
Nearly everything else is even or Hoyas slight advantage. Hoyas had 50% from 3 with StJ 38%, but Hoyas shot 2 pointers poorly with 8 or 19 layups (the contested layups are really hurting the Hoyas particularly 1 on 2 or more as there is a wide open Hoya missed)

Cooley had Styles helping on Soriano from the weak side since Fielder had 4 fouls and he got pinned behind him when Louis made the smart cut. Cooley in postgame pressers has called this out all season. Styles on the Fox replay is only watching the ball and lost Luis. A lot of coaches, Cooley brings it up too, call on defenders to focus on their man and/or space first and when the ball is close to your area pay some attention to it. But, if defending your man with cutting off passing lanes and back cuts in mind that greatly limits what the other team can do. This works well if there aren't glaring mismatches or players who just can't defend (mostly Ish who just doesn't focus nor seem to understand what he needs to be doing on defense). Bristol defends this way really well. Most of the time Rowan also defends this way with his head on a heavy swivel and doing the DMV thing of pointing at their man much of the time. Cook often defends this way when not bodied up with a big, as does Fielder.

Can't wait for Drew to get a summer under his belt. He could be unstoppable next year. He didn’t have a summer last year? Went straight from spring to fall?

Styles was tagging the roller, Soriano, which is his responsibility after Fielder hard hedges. Now maybe you want him more high side so he at least can think about recovering. But then you risk a lob to Soriano. Heath should be pinching in more as he’s best positioned to delay until Fielder can get back in the play. A bad defensive team sometimes will make one rotation, it rarely makes two.

I wish Cooley had the coaching will to pull Epps and bark in his ear when he either makes a clearly careless play or, in a four possession span, takes two of: an unwise drive into traffic or a jumpshot while well guarded before the last 5 seconds in the shot clock. No good outcome for us if Epps keeps doing that, however much he might be our scorer.
Having not done this for pretty much the whole season has stunted team growth.

Good to see so many things start to come together in this game.
Good freshman recruiting class coming next year with a good pg / combo guard with size, shooting wing (redshirting), a big who plays similar to Fielder but taller and loves to block, and another 6'7" point wing (more of a slasher than shooter at this point). Two are top 100 and one 150. Still two open slots as it stands today (would like to see Montgomery get a scholarship as he can shoot and is okay on defense).

No good outcome for us if Epps keeps doing that, however much he might be our scorer. Having not done this for pretty much the whole season has stunted team growth. Cooley pulled Epps twice for quick barks today and put him back in. Epps would change for a few possessions and revert to his habits. By college changing habits is a long process. Hopefully it will be something worked on over summer. It will be interesting with Mulready here next year as he is another 6'4" on ball point, but also shooting guard. The scoring options should improve for the Hoyas, but also defense as well. This may push Epps off ball more as more of a scorer with Rowan and Mulready running point (could also pick up a mature point as a transfer, but sounds like bigs is a good chunk of the focus for the two (for now) open slots).

Looking forward to Fielder adding more size and working on lateral movement. He seemed to have added 15 pounds or so since the first game (he was insanely skinny last summer). But, as Cooley has pointed out his knees seem to be improving so he can get get more work in.

Mentioned at the outset of the season (a few games in) that Epps is an undersized shooting guard after observing his tendencies, etc. Passing isn't his default setting / option. Would prefer him in a complementary Vinnie (The Microwave) Johnson type of role. Cook ought to be a 8 to 10 minute reserve at most next season - with the primary objective to secure boards and immediately pass out to an open teammate. The length of time he takes to gather before going up and his lackluster ability to soar render him a negligible presence offensively (owing to opponents enjoying the luxury of establishing superior defensive positioning against him). Have hope for Fielder to be a (major) positive contributor moving forward - applaud his feistiness.

You can’t even be excited about Fielder at this point? Such a troll. Lucky for you the guy who runs this board is also a troll - the weirdest thing in the history of the Internet. You guys are perfect for each other.
