Let’s me ask you this. If you had the choice between having Dante Harris or Malcolm Wilson for your last roster spot, who are you picking? That is a false choice. Both Dante Harris and Malcom Wilson were on the roster going into last season. So, there would have been no need to dismiss either one if Patrick Ewing managed his roster and recruiting correctly. (I would note that you are dodging the fact that your previous posts have contained false information about my position on both Wilson and running off players.) You haven’t answered the question. Who would you pick between Dante Harris and Malcolm Wilson.

You’re trying to play games and I have more important things to spend my time on right now. When you want to have a good faith discussion about our team, I’m game, but that’s not what’s happening here.

You haven’t answered the question. Who would you pick between Dante Harris and Malcolm Wilson. I did not answer the question because it’s not a relevant question, and because you ignored my previous points after making up false things I supposedly said. Neither Harris nor Wilson should have been driven off the roster. You seemingly disagree. My position has been consistent on Wilson all along. I’m kind of surprised to see you seemingly imply that we needed to get rid of Wilson to make room for others. But I get your position. I just don’t agree with it. So I’m Asking you now. Who would you pick between Dante Harris and Malcolm Wilson if you could only keep one on your team?

I would love to know what makes you think Fielder can’t have an impact at any of these positions? How are you determining his level of strength? i He needs to add strength and will fill out eventually. Too skinny right now. Which means he will get pushed around or injured playing center. Didn’t really play in Kenner. That usually is not a good sign for a freshman as they need to reps and competition. You can usually tell if a freshman will contribute freshman year from how they do in Kenner. If you are invisible in Kenner than you likely won’t do much during the season. Also his height is still unconfirmed. Is he 6-9 or 6-11. If he’s 6-9 at that weight hard to play center. If he’s a legit 6-11 with length then he could play stretch 4 center. 1 – Creighton has been starting a big man who is skinny and has been from day one. That body frame doesn’t automatically mean a guy can’t come in and compete in the paint. The notion of wiry strength has been a thing for awhile now. 2-He did not play Kenner League because apparently he and Jalen had injuries that the coaching staff did not want to take chances on. 3-I think Fielder is tall enough for at least PF. Anyway I mostly hear/read 6’10 or above in regards to his height. Jon Rothstein stopped by practice and listed him as 6’10 and a ½. Either he did that because he has seen enough 6’10 ½ guys before to be able to recognize that exact height automatically or the Gtown staff provided that as an official listing. He’s very tall. As of right now he is taller than Thomas Sorber whom we expect to come in next season and start even if he isn’t 7 feet tall.

Can we discuss this year's roster at some point on this thread. Could you kids take this to OffTopic?

Time to find out if and to what extent Ryan can contribute. Honestly, while this team is thin in the middle the loss of Akok is unfortunate but probably not all bad. Having a senior take up minutes in what is clearly going to be a rebuilding year is not that great. Already will devote a considerable amount of playing time to two seniors in Cook and Massoud. If Akok stayed there would be even less time for Fielder, Ryan and McKenna. Lots of teams have had great success in recent years without playing a true 5 in the starting lineup. Hoyas will have one true 5 in Cook, though a little undersized, and a good amount of height at all the other positions. So if Cook is the only true five what is Mutombo?

FWIW, i was told the staff intended for McKenna to redshirt. Will that change if theyre low on bodies? Who knows. But until I hear otherwise I'll stick with the redshirt as the likely plan. Not to mention the rotation I threw out there is already 9 deep. It would be pretty unusual to have a consistent 10 man rotation.
Mutombo. I believe that in a perfect world - he wouldn't see the court. I've been preaching for years on here and nothing has changed - Ryan just doesn't consider basketball his #1. Maybe he can give you 10 minutes a night. If his midrange is falling, maybe his offense can offset his lack of lateral mobility and recovery on defense. But Ryan is not going to have a Sims or Hibbert Renaissance at this point. It took Henry until senior year to mature and focus on basketball. And it showed. Maybe the new staff will have an effect on Ryan's motivation. But until then, anyone expecting a leap will be very disappointed imo.

What is the basis for saying that Ryan doesn't consider basketball his #1? If he's said this in articles or interviews, I am open to that, but otherwise, I don't see the basis for stating this. Mutombo was considered a 4 star recruit by ESPN, and he was 80th on 247's composite ranking. The point being, Mutombo is not just some walk-on who is just getting a degree at Georgetown, like Trey Mourning (who did play, and played a lot more than he should have given his skill level). As far as a "renaissance," that's always unlikely, but I don't think we can say it's impossible. The kid has barely played, and when he has played he hasn't looked horrible by any stretch. To me, at times, he seemed better than other bigs who got time before him (like Wilson, even Ighoefe at times during Mutombo's freshman year). To be fair, I'm largely with you--I doubt Mutombo will turn into an All Big East Center like Hibbert, or even as good as Sims during his senior year, but we really don't need him to be that good to be a productive member of the roster. I also think the comparison to Sims is not really on point. By all accounts, Sims' maturity was a major factor in his improvement (which started junior year even though people always point to his senior year). As for Hibbert, his improvement occurred in large part bceause of a change in conditioning that made him viable. Ryan seems like a mature kid already; and I don't think he was in as bad shape as Hibbert. But, Ryan hasn't really played much. I would also remind everybody about his father's illness, too, and we have absolutely no idea what impact that had on him last year.

That's what happens when a kid sits for two years without any real opportunity to play.

Just what I've been told for several years now by 'team insiders' under both staffs. But it's just some folks opinions. Take it or leave it. Maybe it's best put another way. Ewing publicly responded to some post game questions about Mutombos lack of playing time by alluding to Ryan needing to grow up and mature and put in the time. But I wouldn't behoove anyone who says 'Being in Ewings doghouse as a coach might be a badge of honor'. Cooley has tried to recruit over Mutombo 2 fold from day 1. Dickerson long shot. Cook. And since Cook we've been in contact with a number of other bigs. It seems pretty apparent just based on public recruiting info that the new staff had no intentions (and still likely don't if they can find another last minute big) to play Mutombo much. Again, I've heard nothing but great things about the kid as a person. As a student. As probably the most intertwined Gtown bball member into the general Georgetown student community. And hopefully if all true then one day he decides that Basketball is his passion and finds another gear. But you've seen him play (granted in small spurts) for 2 years. And while they're have been moments, does anyone come away thinking he's the answer to minutes at the 5 the next 2 seasons? He couldnt play over Tim I. Or even Ezewiro. Guys now at Cal Baptist (I think he's moved on from there too) and St. Louis. I would love for Ryan to be the next Hibbert or Sims. I just think that from everything I've seen and heard that chance is very very unlikely.

To my eye, Mutombo was ready offensively. He had been productive in limited minutes. He struggled defensively with positional awareness and lateral quickness.
Players improve over the course of their career. Being a junior and having 2 years under his belt and Mutombo may be even more ready to play an active role on the roster. There is a chance that Cook and Mutombo are enough to meet the requirement. There is also a chance that they are not enough.

There’s that contingent on here that just are hoping he does well as some sort of last jab at Coach Ewing. But that in itself is a weird take because Ryan is A family friend and god son to Ewing so if Ryan had any talent/dedication Coach Ewing would have played him. By this point Ryan should be able to be like a Northwesterns Matthew Nicholson type rotation player. But some times the hunger just isn’t there when you are a superstars kid as opposed to someone like Sims.

Quite a difference than 6-9 or even 6-10. That’s still three inches plus more length. As a freshman we were able to easily stop Kalkbrenner with Q. See big east title game. But since then Kalkbrenner has filled out. More muscle and size, more of a man’s body now than a high school body. So it’s incorrect to say Kalkbrenner has the same body as when he was a freshman

I would love to see a true “five-out” lineup at times with Fielder and Massoud in the front court and any combination of Epps, Heath, Brumbaugh, Bristol and Styles 1 through 3. They probably would struggle on the boards but could give teams running a traditional five man fits with the spacing and shooting.
I’m hopeful Fielder gets real minutes this season. He reminds me of quite a few bigs in the conference in recent years that our rivals have had success with.

Both Roy and Henry made their leaps after standout Kenner League summers. Its not out of the question to think Ryan, after having EASILY his best KL showing, to make a huge improvement in regular season performance this upcoming year, especially since he will not be counted on as a starter but will be a guy off the bench.

I am going to refrain from a sarcastic response. I'll bet I've rewatched video of these two guys more than anyone else. I realize that Sorber has the wider build thank you. But so much of this discussion has been about height. In my experience of watching hoops, typically the taller you are the more you can get away with in the paint even if your body has yet to catch up in muscle mass. Drew is basically 6'11 with a rep of competing and battling in the paint. He needs to continue to get stronger but freshmen college players tend to not be a finished work in terms of their physiques in the first place. Nonetheless guys like him have been called upon to hold their own in college ball that first year like forever. I just reject the notion that because he looks kinda scrawny he should be written off for this upcoming season. That is all. People should go back and look at Alonzo Mourning in the 1988 McDonald All American game or even his frosh season at GU. He was not Muscle Beach at first. He had more of a wiry build, even more slim than some of his fellow '88 high school all-stars. Zo remains my favorite Hoya forever and I'm not foolish enough to suggest Fielder can have the freshman impact that Mourning did. I will claim though that Mourning, in the chest and shoulders, was not that much more massive than Fielder. Granted I am certain that Zo was stronger. But just because Fielder may look scrawny dos not mean he won't be ready to compete, eventually at least, successfully in the paint when needed. Hell, the best example is Laettner in his freshmen year and how despite not having much noticeable musculature he was able to hold his own against Mourning and Georgetown in the NCAA East Regional.
