Let me premise this by saying that I think, a majority of the time, sports interviews are silly. This is super evident if you watch professional sports reporters ask players or coaches a question in any sport. For example:
- Baseball. Guy hits a grand slam in the 9th inning to win the game. "Joe, how did it feel to hit a grand slam and win the game?" - Basketball. Guy hits a buzzer beater with a long three to win a game. "Derek, how big was it for you to make that shot?"
It's rare for sports reporters to ask meaningful questions, and when they DO ask tougher questions, players and coaches almost always dodge (JT3 did this all the time). I know Ewing would never answer this, but I would want to ask something like, "You are clearly unhappy with the team's defense. What have you done differently as a coach to try to get the guys to buy in?" or something like that. Again, it's doubtful you'd get a meaningful answer, but it would be a good question.
I have a more subdued personality myself, so the whole "walking out" act isn't something I really like. But, I get that other people are more fiery and show their emotions on their sleeve more. I do not really have a problem with a coach necessarily walking out of a press conference, but I don't like when coaches blame players. And, the "walking out" thing is really more an act than anything else. If Ewing had answered the questions and said something like, "Listen guys, I appreciate your time, but I need to go and get back to the locker room," and left, I don't think this thread would even exist.

practice, the 😁 indicates I am being facetious. Lighten up. I'm not particularly taking his walkout as seriously as others. My bad!!!! Of course hoyajmw followed up with what I believe are sincere crazy questions! I get on here sometimes and it's like whack-a-mole with some of these guys. Apologies ... I blame it on my eyes ..I can't really make out the expression on that emoticon. Ah, no big deal, apology unnecessary. I just want Ewing and Hoyas to win like almost everyone else here.

Excellent answer. Some here are afraid to ask the difficult questions because they might upset the coaches.

There is a level of self-awareness that can be revealed if a coach can say "yeah, wish we would've pressed more and earlier." Or "maybe we could've played tighter in a man on #XXX, who just kept lighting us up." But the core point is that, while many coaches in fact won't say squat when asked, sometimes they will and/or what they evade or how they evade it itself can be revealing.

Eh, he's a winner no doubt. It's just that he's not as pure as the driven snow. That's probably not for the liking for some of the masses who support GU. FWIW Pitino’s Iona is now 13-3. Last night they had 23 assists in their game against Manhattan. Just sayin… At this rate he is 5-0 in the conference and could be on track to just win an at large bid outside of winning the conference since they have actually competed and won against top 25 teams And even if he won’t answer those tough questions they should still be asked to get people thinking and Ewing thinking that something needs to change because if coaches think everything is fine nothing will change and that could mean maybe a lightbulb moment but if he keeps blaming the players then idk how I could continue to respect him

Likely wouldn't touch Georgetown if Ewing was unceremoniously pushed out.

Pitino coached Ewing with the Knicks. Likely wouldn't touch Georgetown if Ewing was unceremoniously pushed out. Maybe Pat can pick his successor just like JT2 did. Another reason Pitino is not an option is he has a rather large buyout that Georgetown isn’t going to pay in addition to paying the rest of Ewing’s contract. I don’t know if it’s been touched upon, but the school is probably under more financial pressure now than in 2017, and I’m not so sure there’s a blank check for the next move (including absorbing buy outs).

You make a good point. Probably wouldn't be. If the school is going to wreck the Ewing/Thompson/Mourning/Mutumbo connection then they would probably just offer a small salary for the next head coach and go in the Fordham direction.

I think it’s a bad assumption to believe that there is a significant buyout associated with Ewing’s remaining contract.

I think if there is a change, it’s going to be a financially palatable move (ie young mid major HC, assistant at a P5, etc). Also makes it a cleaner move than an established name guy who would have to tread lightly on the Ewing / Thompson legacy.

I can’t imagine him not resigning if this season plays out like it’s looking it will. Health concerns would be a good excuse.

Nothing in his make-up or some of the perceived stubbornness he's shown so far would not lead me to think he would ever do that. At worst they could let him save face and say he's "resigning" but I'm sure there'd be some agreement on the rest of the money due him...

I think when push comes to shove, and the national press starts to talk about the embarrassment of Georgetown basketball, then the cost of paying a failed coach to go away and the cost to hire a new coach is not a showstopper for the university. As I've said before, the Hoyas are irrelevant right now -- and actually to the extent anyone pays attention to Georgetown, the BE Tournament win was a positive. Should the Hoyas really tank this season in the BE -- then the team becomes a relevant embarrassment and the wheels will be begin to turn ... quickly. We've seen it before twice ... not sure why this will come as a surprise to anyone. The good news this time is that neither Ronny nor PE Jr. seem to be viable HC coaching options ... so perhaps the necessary clean break will happen.

Based on the school’s Form 990’s I believe they paid JT3 two years after he was fired - essentially, they paid out the remaining term of his contract. Nobody is going to voluntarily resign in such a way that they leave money on the table barring extenuating circumstances.

He has a tremendous amount of pride and I'm sure he wants to turn this thing around but I can't believe that after this year he won't be man enough to admit that it's not working and for the good of the basketball program he will resign. Doing so also saves him the embarrassment of not having his contract renewed and saves the University the drama of not renewing it.
