Not unique to Nova. During the season, I received an email from Providence where you could order jersey tee shirts (both Men's BB and Women's BB) with current player names and numbers on the shirts and the players were supposed to get a piece of the proceeds.

Most of the current Seton Hall players will have a chance to make money starting Thursday when they make a paid appearance at the grand opening of a Primo Hoagies in West Orange that will feature photograph opportunities and pre-signed autographs by the players. Next week the players will also earn money by appearing in the HallBall Basketball ProCamp in Newark that will bring in 160 campers and is scheduled for three hours.

“The guys are getting paid to the do the grand opening appearance and they’re getting paid to do the camp,” said Eric Liebler, a Seton Hall graduate who is the President of G3Marketing and ProCamps, and his handling both events with the Seton Hall players.

Liebler has extensive experience running team events and camps associated with players from other schools, including Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton and Creighton. He declined to provide specifics on how much many the Seton Hall players can earn from the NIL opportunities, but one industry expert estimated each player could earn between $500-$1,000 per appearance.

Liebler also helped negotiate Topps trading card deals last season for Seton Hall stars Jared Rhoden, who played Summer League with the Sacramento Kings, and Kadary Richmond. He has negotiated new trading card deals for incoming Seton Hall transfers Femi Odukale and Al-Amir Dawes.

“Femi and Al are getting paid to do the Topps deal,” he said.

Earlier this week, NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt told SBJ that preliminary feedback was “mostly favorable.” But the idea is more controversial than he let on — at Big East media day on Tuesday, Commissioner Val Ackerman told Front Office Sports that after further consideration, the conference is “split” on the idea.

But she noted athletic directors are likely “torn” — concerned about the cost of putting on games, the impact on athletes, and even the toll on staff who often use summer months for vacations.

“Summer is supposed to be the time of year when these kids get a break — a physical break, a mental break, catch up on schoolwork, cause that is part of the drill here,” Ackerman said. “That would be lost or diminished.”

Multiple coaches shared these concerns. “I’m not a fan of it,” Marquette’s Shaka Smart said, citing a fear of potential “collateral damage” for athletes.
