I would love if someone could explain this to me. I get that some all league level player or the top player or two on a team where that team is the defacto professional sports team for that area have some value as a spokesperson or by putting their mug on a billboard next to a product, but who in the world is going to pay money for anyone else? Why would a business pay Don Carey or anyone who is just a good or even very good but not NBA level college player at school X or Y anything to use his NIL? Nobody is paying Donald Carey or anyone else of that caliber significant money for their NIL. Almost all NIL deals are really talent acquisition fees/salaries paid under the guise of being NIL. But, they aren't actually compensation for NIL. This is why I say, in principle, allowing NIL payments is great - let kids benefit off their likeness. But, boosters and alumni are using these NIL deals to recruit or retain players, and the size of the deals are rarely correlative to the actual market value of their NIL. It's just a legal mechanism to pay guys.

I love how the title of this article asks where the current NIL model is sustainable, but Nick Saban's actual quote here is actually the opposite - he questions whether it is sustainable not to play in NIL:

This country is so unfair to rich people it’s like they don’t get a say in anything! He’s so brave to hold out his principles and not pay the players

"Saban said Alabama players made $3 million "doing it the right way" last year and that only 25 players were able to leverage NIL opportunities."

"I tell the recruits the same thing: Our job is not to buy you to come to school here," he said. "And I don't know how you manage your locker room. And I don't know if this is a sustainable model"

All offseason, speculation has run rampant about the NCAA’s enforcement of NIL bylaws. Monday, Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger — who’s been at the forefront of NIL reporting — shared some potential reasons for the issues... “There’s two problems here. NCAA enforcement is understaffed. We reported several weeks ago about their staffing issues, down 15 [to] 20 people from the COVID-like layoffs, I believe. No. 2 is the fear of being sued by wealthy boosters and booster collectives for one reason, potential anti-trust stuff, and two, potentially not being able to prove that inducements are inducements. As an AD told me, ‘It can smell like an inducement, it can look like an inducement, but you’ve got to prove that it was an inducement.’ A lot of these boosters and collectives are pretty savvy in crafting their contracts. They’re going to make sure they don’t have something in there that can get them caught.” www.on3.com/nil/news/ross-dellenger-ncaa-fears-litigation-nil-enforcement-sued-lawsuit-paul-finebaum-show-collectives/

Back in the days of Big John, trading cards with Hoyas were produced for use by DC cops, who gave them away to kids as a way of starting friendly conversations. No cards were sold, so there were no NCAA violations.

No cards were sold, so there were no NCAA violations. This was still happening from 2001-2005 at least. The Athletics Department would get boxes of cards for each individual player and the pep band would help out by organizing the cards into rubber banded team packs to be given out to the kids.

Looks like Ronny is still around Of course he is - he's the guy actually running this program. Ewing is practically a figure head that allows Ronny to continue making his several hundred thousand dollars a year and have an office at the Thompson Center based solely on his last name. A link to a ton of pictures from the event, for those that don't want to try to click through Twitter to find them: procampspics.zenfolio.com/p192141505/h10b09726#h19dcc2f2

I am not really sure how this whole thing works for NIL money, but if the players could pick up a little extra money from showing up at a thing like this, then I am happy for them.

“I don’t know what the football side has been as far as agents, advisors and attorneys,” a veteran basketball coach with more than a decade of experience told On3. “But we’re definitely seeing it on this side. I can’t think of a recruit we’ve targeted over the past six months that hasn’t made NIL part of the decision-making process. “We try to avoid talking about specific numbers because we’ve been told ad nauseam not to. But some of them just throw it out or they’ll say it without saying it if that makes sense. It’s just a common part of the recruiting process now, I guess.” “It’s plain and simple,” Tipton said. “Just like it is in football, the programs with the largest collectives are going to win at the end of the day.” www.on3.com/nil/news/despite-focus-on-football-nil-pay-for-play-concerns-impacting-basketball/
