The program still has prestige.
There is too much rich history, too many produced Hall of Famers, great basketball alumni.
It's why people still wonder what happened to Georgetown. They know the history. They know the potential that still exists.
The Big East would love for Georgetown to be on top again. It's looked at as one of the flagship programs in the conference, along with Nova. You can't erase history. Butler, Creighton, Seton Hall, don't have that kind of history with the conference.
This program is a sleeping giant. We can get back to success. We have the potential to win, doing it the right way with the standard of excellence JT2 established for the program on and off the court. It just takes the right coach. JT2 was the right coach. Is Ewing? Let's give him 5 years and then evaluate the state of the program.

Why dig the hole any deeper? Ewing is unambiguously a disaster and not the right coach. He doesn’t deserve five more minutes. Another two seasons of this and the recovery is just more difficult.

There is no appetite or budget for a new coach. Ewing must succeed.

Then, it’s over. It was a pretty good run for GU basketball but I guess all decent things must come to an end.

There is no appetite or budget for a new coach. Ewing must succeed. Not true. GU can slash the current head coaching salary (and fill it with performance incentives) and still get a good, hungry coach.

At the moment, I’m back to exactly where I was in the winter of 2017:
This is not a program worthy of anyone’s time or money. I’ll still record games and watch when I can, but that’s about it.
And if budget concerns are correct, it really could be the end of Georgetown as a program with high-major aspirations. Sad, but this has been a decade coming, and the powers that be have made so many mistakes.

I'm sure the pandemic hasn't helped as alot of Universities are losing alot of money and will have to cut their athletic budget and programs.

I have already raised the white flag and given up . . . for now. After 20+ years, I stopped donating this year, stopped watching games, I just follow the team via hoyatalk. I can remain more disassociated that way and avoid the emotion.
I have come to the realization that Ewing will be here at least through next season and as a result there is no reason to watch this season with a jumbled, hodgepodge team made up of external transfers. The fact Sibley is not even seeing the floor just adds to my concern.
Perhaps IF Ewing is able to keep the current recruiting class together and avoids significant transfers, I will check back in next season, but this year is a total wash for me. I am not going to put my energy behind it.

Why not see what he does with this bunch and next year's? It's too soon for the revolving door. That said, if things do *not* work out, I'm wondering if we should consider going the JT2 route with the best available local high school coach, rather than a college retread. I suppose lightning might strike twice and it's about time we re-established a presence locally.

Man if only we had not lost our guys from last year. These Ewing haters on here wouldn't be saying all these negative things about Ewing. They would be praising him.

Is Ewing? Let's give him 5 years and then evaluate the state of the program. Does the program still have prestige? Does the potential for success still exist? Is the proragm a sleeping giant? I wonder if we, as alumni and/or fans who have long supported and followed the program, are looking through rose-colored glasses. Georgetown had university leadership in Fr. Henle and Fr. Healy who saw the potential for Georgetown's academic growth and financial endowment growth through the success of the basketball program, and were visibly linked to John Thompson Jr. I'm not so certain that President DeGioia sees it that way now, as he has been the beneficiary of his predecessors' foresight. The basketball program's struggles have been amplified by the change in college basketball. Once the one-and-dones became desirable, the biggest selling point that Georgetown had ""come here, stay four years and you'll also get a Georgetown degree") was minimized. We were trying to recruit players who no longer needed to consider the value of the degree relative to quick access to the NBA's riches. The university never adapted to these changes. I have said for the better part of the last decade, to my fellow friends from the Class of '78, that we were not likely to continue to compete successfully at the level to which we were accustomed. Regretfully, I feel that way even more strongly now.
