Retitled this thread as it has become more current-facing than a thread about long term issues in the program. --Admin
I love Hoya basketball, and have grave concerns about the future. With a likely record this season of something like 5 and 20, and looking so poorly coached to those of us watching, we will continue to lose loyal fans, as we certainly have been. Our program has to be very costly, e.g., Ewings salary, Orr's, etal. If the COVID lifts next year, how can we go back to renting the Cap Center? We were down to 4,000 (announced, not tickets sold) attendance and that will continue to decrease as we lose our fans. Where will we play? And will highly regarded recruits even think about Georgetown? This is a critical problem, has been obvious to many for a number of years now, and senior leadership of the university has failed to really address it.

Georgetown is no longer a national brand. Even when I was in high school (2013-2017) by the time I graduated the program was an afterthought even in the northeast. Seton Hall would be considered a much bigger program than Georgetown right now, and many of the same kids I grew up with rooting for Georgetown regularly go to Seton Hall games and repost Seton Hall content on social media. Their attendance at the Prudential Center also blows out Georgetown's over the past few years. With that said, Willard took Seton Hall from bottom feeder with a small fan base to north Jersey's favorite team in three or four years, and a top level coach could do the same for Georgetown in the DMV.

The team/program has not advanced one bit in three years.

I'm on the ledge but felt, after last year's player bloodletting, that we had to give PE this year and next. But I really feel that if this team doesn't show some improvement by the end of the year and if we have another top recruit (Sibley) either flame out and/or leave then I just might jump on the "Dump PE Bandwagon". Why, after our first two games do I have visions of Chris Mullins instead of sugarplums dancing in my head?

Watching Illinois play now is depressing. We beat them two years ago in their building. Their star freshmen are now upperclassmen stars and have them in the Top 5. Our star freshmen are on other teams while we are losing at home to Navy.

I guess nobody told them that the right way to do this is to be significantly worse in year four of the rebuild than when it all started.

I’m highly disappointed in the lack of change in the program. That bootleg midnight madness was embarrassing. We still look sloppy offensively and defensively. Our players look weak. It’s sad. Still going to root them on but enough is enough. Seems like the fans care more than administration.

We have to have the convo. The athletic department has been absolutely inept for years when it comes to basketball. Coach Ewing isn’t a coaching mastermind by any stretch but he’s been set up to fail with assistants that don’t deliver and absolute mishandling in terms of team engagement with the fans. We mess up all the little things which is fine if you’re a top program but we aren’t anymore, and those seats will stay empty when all the department signals is a lack of interest. Don’t get me started on how the transfers were handled either....

Does anyone remember when our problem was underperforming our NCAA seed?
Seemed like a big deal at the time.
Who knew those were the good old days?

I guess I'll make the required "Why don't we recruit more in our own backyard?" post. The route to relevance and our future runs through owning the DMV. That either isn't a priority for the present staff, or they just haven't been very good at it.

I’ve always said “be careful what you wish four” Kick out the Thompson’s/Ewing’s and it could easily turn into 30 years of bottom dwelling a la when DePaul kicked the Meyers to the curb. (Which basically led to all the Meyers player alumni ignoring the program and turning their backs on it)

I would like to see Pat succeed at GU all the way to fulfilling his NBA head coaching dream, but the evidence points in another direction. Don’t be afraid.

Yeah, I'd like to see that article because I don't think it's really all that coveted a position for most coaching candidates. Like I can't see a Hurley or Miller or Will Wade want to come here before they got the jobs they did.

Like I can't see a Hurley or Miller or Will Wade want to come here before they got the jobs they did. I think it might be different now. Easy to understand why someone outside the Thompson circle would be reluctant to take on this job with Big John sitting in the gym during practices and fans constantly drawing comparisons. All that has changed now. The dwindling fanbase just wants to see the program restored to relevancy. The Thompson influence will always remain (hopefully) but almost certainly be nowhere near as strong. It is still one of the highest paid coaching positions in the nation, located in a basketball hotbed and frankly expectations are so low that I can see any number of quality coaches willing to take the chance. Let's hope that a new coach is not needed, but the fact that the topic is even raised tells you a lot about the current state of the program.
