Marshall did it twice coming down the stretch

Taking off my Hoya colored glasses for a moment, I think there is a slight but significant difference. Marshall was stepping forward at the same time he was stopping his dribble and grabbing the ball with both hands; he then hopped back with both feet (technically the 2 steps you are allowed) before launching. However after Jahvon stops his dribble and grabs the ball, he takes a quick step with his left foot (establishing it as his pivot foot), then hops back with both feet - arguably 3 steps all together.

I think Blair shooting with one foot in front of the other vs Marshall shooting with his feet side by side helps too. Blair needed an additional step to create that balance, while Marshall didn't. Close call, but I can't be too mad.

Same move. That's the point. Exactly. Either call both a travel or let both go. It shouldn't be that hard. Completely disagree. Blair gathers and hops, 2 moves. The other guy gathered and hopped same movement.

Ok I went back and re-watched the Xavier highlights, trying to focus on 3 point defense. I know there's discussions here on whether we're just unlucky or is it bad defense. So I went through all 9 of Xavier's 3s and put down my two cents.
I am by no means an expert but have a decent understanding of Xs and Os. Would be curious if other posters had a different read on the plays. The highlight package has stuff other than the 3s but all 9 are in there. Comments are in order of the 3s.
Carter 3: Mosely reaches with his help defense instead of moving his feet. Doesn’t stop ballhandler, loses track of his man, slow closeout. This one’s on Mosely unfortunately.
Tandy 3: Blair loses touch w Tandy, not sure if he was expecting cross screen but he’s way behind and starts moving 2 seconds late. Could scream for help and maybe Tim I. hedges but he doesn’t move and that would be a tough ask. Wide open rhythm 3 for good shooter.
Tandy 3: Woof. Tim I. hard hedge fails, it doesn’t redirect dribbler to allow Mosely to recover or force him to pick up dribble. Hesitation dribble and waits for Tim I. to turn and keeps Mosely on his hip. Allen has to abandon corner 3 to sprint under hoop to try and take away layup. Pickett does nothing, Mosely now has to recover all the way to the corner. Target practice for Tandy
Scruggs 3: 2-3 zone, simple back and forth pass, Robinson not able to recover. This was a tough one for me to judge. My gut tells me Blair is supposed to be ready to cover middle and step up from 3 point line after Robinson jumps to wing ,and he has to trust there will be help to his side and that center steps up. Instead he drifts to the wing and it’s an easy shot. Not terrible defense but probably not the way you draw it up
Marshall 3: This play was in semi-transition and I honestly think we had no idea what defense we were in. Two guys run away from Marshall and then they pass it right back to him. Wide open 3.
Scruggs 3: Mosely digs down on post from strong side, too easy a pass out to perimeter. When Scruggs re-spaces to center, nobody is prepared to help. I hate the hard dig from strong side on post up.
Marshall 3: I think this is one you generally chalk up to good defense and a guy hitting his shot. Blair doubles post as passer cuts through, Pickett sinks in to pick up cutter. Pickett gets beat just enough on closeout that Mosely has to help and Mosely can’t get back in time. But it’s mostly good rotations and a contested 3 from a low pct shooter. I would argue don’t double in first place from strong side but you had a chance to recover.
Marshall 3: The 1st stepback. Not much you can do here. The fake screen doesn’t really do anything, Mosely is a little behind but again would live w that shot for Marshall.
Marshall 3: 2nd stepback. Again a shot you live with. No problem with Mosely aggressively guarding there to try and avoid Marshall getting a foul head of steam and lowering his head on a drive. Just a bad break.
Lets call the Scruggs one against the 2-3 zone good defense although could be convinced otherwise. Two I chalk up to bad scheme (failed hedge and dig down in post), three are just bad defense, and four are shots you can live with that dropped. Every team will hit a few against good defense, we simply can’t have the breakdowns that are bad defense or have a scheme put us behind.
I will say most of the bad defense was early and the ones you could live with were late. Not sure if that was adjustments from staff but worth calling out.

Unfortunately, this has largely been the pattern all year, and over the last few years. We leave way too many wide open threes. It's one of the systemic problems with our defense. Something drastic needs to improve next season beyond our individual defenders playing better.

I am fine with the dig down, but the second defender has to adjust and come flying once the first help guy moves over. It is something we should practice, even with guys leaping to block live jump shots.

The positive has to be how low we were when Esh was canned and how quickly we turned things around. The definition of of "how low" has been recentered since 2004. Craig Esherick's last three seasons: 2001-02: 19-11 overall, 9-7 Big East 2002-03: 19-15, 6-10 2003-04: 13-15, 4-12 Total: 51-41, 19-29 John Thompson III's last three seasons: 2014-15: 22-11, 12-6 2015:16: 15-18, 7-11 2016-17: 14-18, 5-13 Total: 51-47, 24-30 Last three seasons: 2017-18: 15-15, 5-13 2018-19: 19-14, 9-9 2019-20: 15-14, 5-11 Total: 49-43, 19-33 Those stats are terrifying regarding how bad we are as a program. I remember the 2004 season. Started something like 10-0 beating mostly cupcakes and then ended the year on a brutal losing streak. I always wondered if Coach Esherick was caught by surprise when Michael Sweetney turned pro after his junior year. I remember Duke coming into DC in 2004 and crushing us on National TV and Billy Packer basically telling the nation that Georgetown Basketball was never ever going to be any good ever again. That's what made the victory over them in January of 2006 so sweet. I never envisioned this program would ever sink back to the 2004 level or maybe worse. Hard to believe we aren't even good enough to qualify for the NIT for the 4th time in the last 5 years. Especially considering how truly mediocre college basketball is in this current generation. The truly scary thing is that losing feeds losing. It is such a difficult cycle to get out of. I don't know how Georgetown is going to get out this current mess. We struggle to attract talent, the attendance is probably at a 40 year low (whenever we moved off campus in the early 80's) so I can't imagine the gigantic challenges our staff has bringing in any recruits to watch Georgetown play conference games in front of 5000 people. What kid would want to play in that environment. My expectations for this season changed in early December when Akinjo quit on his teammates and coaches and LeBlanc had his disappointing situation. So what has transpired the past few months especially given the injuries to Omar and Mac are not surprising. However, what makes me most sad and depressed is what next season might be like. Patrick Ewing may need to be the the second coming of Bobby Knight with X's and O's to get this program to even be competitive next season. That worries me a lot more than ending this season on a 7 game losing streak.
