Did the Hoyas tighten up their 3 defense or did App State grow cold: 1-13 in 2nd half.

I understand the frustration, trust me but Pat's offense requires the ball handler to break down his man then make the right decision (score or find open guy). At this point our guys that can break down their man are FR so they make the wrong decision as often as the right and the off-ball guys arent comfortable with it yet. 10 games is a tiny sample and if you havent seen improvement and adjustments over last years team, idk what to say. Still a long way to go. To me, that's not a longterm winning offense.. I much prefer the Nova or Creighton way of offense... Sharing the ball? I do too but that didnt work well with the last coach and this coach has only worked with star PGs that have been trusted with the ball; to break their man down and to make the right decision. Now I hope Pat adjusts and realizes in CBB it's not just an allstar PG and a bunch of finishers but so far, this offense is predicated on beating the D with that first move then finding the next pass or shot.

Look at that Jessie only ended up with 3 fouls ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Which goes to show that Pats method worked

Not saying this is right or wrong but no minutes for Blair or Carter in the 2nd half after a nice first half by both...
As someone already said has to be tough at times as a player to get in a groove with the substitution patterns...
However I think I prefer this to JT3 who almost seemed robotical in his substitutions that seemed to not take into account the actual game flow at times...

Final Thoughts:
I predicted this team to win by 7 and they won by 10 After the hoyas lost the lead at the 9:38 mark they closed the game with a 26-16 run Govan was held scoreless in the 1st half, but McClung, Akinjo, Leblanc and Malinkowski all scored in double digits with 14, 17, 10, 11 points
Final Grade: C The team did what they were expected to do which is win. It was not pretty and the team failed to gain a double digit lead until the last minute Nevertheless it is a win

Look, there has been a lot of questioning why Mourning is stealing minutes from Leblanc but tonight's game has me wondering if he's also stealing minutes that Carter should get. Carter didn't seem scared to shoot when he was wide open but also seemed to recognize that he needs to give it up when he doesn't have an ideal shot. More frustrating to me than Mourning's defense capabilities is that he tries to do too much on offense when he is the 5th scoring option in the floor. He has the best looking entry passes of a big man that we've had in a long time but it seems like Pat's got to figure out how to get his players to play the role that the team needs.

Yes, share the ball, move the ball, the ball sticks wayy too much with this team... It worked very well until JT3 lost his way... Akinjo is very good but Gtown doesn't have the personnel to have him distribute to the way you're describing... Plus he's a scorer 1st anyway so that makes it that much harder to do for him... Once the BE season starts, I think this team will be easy to defend...

Double digit win, piece of cake, never in doubt. Now where's that rolling eyes emoticon, again?
While we managed to break it open very late, let's not forget the two minute segment from just under 5 to go to just under 3 to go where we had not two, not three, but four consecutive turnovers. UGH.
I am not a Mac basher, but I would also be curious why, with less than 90 seconds left and nursing a small lead, he shot four seconds into the shot clock. At least that's what ESPN showed. Can't be doing that.
And, yet again, I heart Josh LeBlanc.

A few thoughts on this one riding home from the game.
I'll start with the positives -- a win is a win. Appalachian State isn't a great team, but they don't shy away from competition either. They took Alabama and Wichita St to the wire earlier this year, and they did much the same with us. I was pleased to see us playing our best basketball at the end. After struggling to maintain a run all game, we finally made a run when it mattered most, with our freshmen leading the way.
Josh LeBlanc is one of my favorite players in recent memory. If he can develop his offensive game more, he can be a special player. We are a different team with him on the floor, and he's by far the most impressive freshman to watch in my view. I thought McClung also had a strong game, and Akinjo did a decent job. He didn't make mistakes in key moments, which was good. Also, Malinowski continues to play a really important role for us. I thought he was great again today.
There were a lot of negatives, though. Our defense was awful, and our rebounding was even worse. We didn't seem to have much energy for loose balls, and we had even less feel and execution for them. I was sitting across from our bench, and I clearly heard Coach Ewing screaming repeatedly, "Rebound!" Govan had a tough day. He just seemed a step off today, with no real energy on offense or defense.
All in all, not a very well executed game, but we won. We needed a win in the worst way. Also, glad to see Pickett back on the floor today. Seemed like Saturday got his attention.

Did the Hoyas tighten up their 3 defense or did App State grow cold: 1-13 in 2nd half. A little of both -- I noticed WAY more hands in faces and no obvious guys running away from shooters in the second half, at least. I don't think we'll ever be great defenders of the 3 this year, but just staying home more and stopping the running around like decapitated chickens could lower opponents' percentages by 5% or so, and that's good enough to equal a few more wins.

I was surprised by Carter in a positive way. His ability to contribute is limited right now, but he was clearly ready for his moment today. I watched him closely while he was on the court. He was focused, positive, and one of the few players willing to dive for a loose ball. I liked his hustle off the bench, and I hope he gets some more run in these final tune up games for league play.

I’m not sure what to takeaway from the game tonight. Short of winning by 30, or god forbid losing, the result leaves me feeling meh. Continue to see great things from Josh, felt Akinjo played solid, and thought Pickett showed there’s still a pulse there. Other than that, our warts are still there.
Next two games will be probably be just as blah, and we won’t get a gauge of improvement until 1/2 at Butler.

Agreed, in some previous games, he had sort of that "deer in the headlights" look, like he wasn't sure where he was supposed to go on the court most of the time. Today he looked ready to play and a part of the team on the floor. I hope it continues. God, we still miss rim defenders.

Once again, Josh with easily the best +/- on the team today. Whatever you think of the stat, the fact that he's ALWAYS on the + side of it means something indeed.
