The biggest negatives:
- The defensive rotations were non-existent. Beat one guy and the ballhandler is at the rim. Some of this is lack of effort, but it also seemed that players either didn't know what to do or were told not to help. If it is the latter, we may be in a bit of trouble, because if our guards can't keep Maine in front of them, what's going to happen with Villanova?
- While in all previous games the offense looked like it had a plan, with movement, screens, etc., for much of the game today it simply broke down into lazy play and standing around, hoping a player can do something on their own. Again, it's likely just effort, but it is disappointing.
- Maine had a pathetic press, but it still gave us problems. We are not a team of strong ballhandlers or good decision-makers. It could get ugly at times.
Things to like:
- Kaleb keeps rolling. I hope he maintains his confidence against better teams.
- I'm enjoying Jahvon Blair's game. He's not overly flashy, but he's got a nose for scoring. He's been sneaky good on offense for a freshmen. Where Pickett has shown flashes but largely been a negative, Blair has shot fairly well and committed very few turnovers despite using a lot of possessions. He's grabbed a decent amount of offensive boards. He's making his FTs and has a nice shot. And he's basically tied with Mosely for second on the team in assist rate. The competition hasn't been great, but he's done a bunch of stuff pretty well.
