I didn't mean to suggest that these calls were related to the new rules. I agree completely that the ones in this game were just flat-out, no good, very bad, terrible calls.
You'd think that III's general demeanor buys him some leeway at other times, but it's hard to gauge whether that's true.

These refs were clearly "out of their element." Even without bringing up those horrendous foul calls and no-calls (there were some for the opposing team as well), you need just remember how long it took for them to resolve the basket vs no-basket call on that last second dunk by Hanson and the shot-clock violation vs out-of-bounds play at the end of the first half. It took them an eternity to come to a decision. Even Donnie Marshall raised that point on the broadcast. The boos were well-deserved. I am just glad nobody flew off the handle leading to uncouth and distasteful behavior typical of other collegiate fans in the greater DC area. Flying beverages, anyone?

This was called a "foul" on Govan. Everyone should re-post it with as many hashtags and call outs to Big East related media as possible. https://vine.co/v/iiUihqgpxFg

It took away a great board and almost certain free throws for us. Insane.

Both guys where legally fighting for position on that rebound, the player from Creighton miss timed his jump and ended up out of position for the actual rebound. The referee saw that player jump awkwardly and just assumed that the bigger Govan must have pushed him. It is not the way calls are supposed to be made, but some officials anticipate calls and react to players moving in what looks like an awkward way and call fouls without actually seeing the contact.
Players that play aggressively and physically get a reputation from referees, and that causes them to get fouls when they are not always warranted. Peak and Hayes fall into that group. Govan does not get any breaks because he is so big and strong and it is just assumed he must have fouled someone when the other player is displaced. Referees do discuss players and teams before the start of every game and when a player has a reputation of fouling a lot the officials are on alert every time they are involved in a play.

To me, the craziest thing about the poor officiating was that nearly all of the bad calls were going against the home team. You almost never see that.

I seriously thought that the refs had money on the game. Who says they did not??? One phantom call in a game happens; a half dozen totally inexplicable phantom calls all against one team rarely does. There are probably only two explanations: 1. This team of officials is grossly incompetent and should never work a college basketball game again... 2. Certain organized groups of individuals had a particular rooting interest in this game which coincidentally matched the outcome of all the terrible calls...

What are you basing this statement on, personal knowledge or just a "of course they discuss players before..."? Because it seems to me like the sort of thing that should be discouraged/prohibited. Don't know that there'd be a way to police it, but that almost certainly sets a tone.

That's BS. I don't know if Pops is still contractually owed payments by the university, but that doesn't make him an employee, and he isn't Georgetown.

Then what was he doing in the press room after the game? It's not like just anybody can be in there sitting where JT2 was. The game was poorly officiated but JT2 was out of line. I'd be embarrassed if I was JT3.

If I was JT3, I'd prefer to be the voice of the program, not my dad who last coached almost 20 years ago.

I'd be embarrassed if I was JT3. Doesn't he have a radio show and do commentary? If so, he probably has a press pass. It's not a big deal. But it'd be nice if someone would ask the commish if HE (oops: SHE) watched tape of the game and if she has any concerns with the refs, seeing as that has a lot more to do with the integrity and quality of the game. But by all means Commissioner, you focus on what's important: remarks made by a coach who has been retired for 17 years (yikes!). On edit: been a rabid fan of college basketball for 25+ years. Even outside of Hoya games, college bb has been almost unwatchable this year. I can promise you the way games are called is impacting a lot more fans than Pop's remarks. These guys have the wrong priorities.

1. Expected response from the commissioner who, in backing those officials, revealed she isn't actually watching the games.
2. Neither his son nor I am embarrassed by JT2, who continues his lifelong practice of speaking his mind.
3. You can bet your life this has a better chance of producing results than "internal mechanisms and open communications channels in place" and you can double down on the suspension that would have come if JT3 said the same thing at his press conference.
As an aside, the Commish is a SHE, not a he, and she actually has pretty good basketball bona fides from her days as a 1000 point scorer at UVa, as David Stern's assistant and President of the WNBA.

Yep I corrected myself. I knew it, just had forgotten. Not a slight against her outside of the fact she has the wrong priorities in this case.

Totally agree with you - I wrote my post as you corrected yours. She couldn't really say anything else, but as I said yesterday JT2's comments would be heard loud and clear in the league office and allowed his son the cover to be diplomatic about it. Very well done IMO.
