I haven't seen Xavier play, but based on their stats on KenPom, I wouldn't be surprised to see a game very similar to the one the Hoyas just played. Xavier is 11th in offensive efficiency (IU is 9th), score a lot of points (82.7 per game) and make a lot of their threes (39.2%), although they don't take quite as many as Indiana did. Their defense is their weak spot--their efficiency is 109th overall (IU is 188th). Unlike Indiana though, it looks they have some legit big guys in Stainbrook and Jalen Reynolds, which also means we need to step up on the boards, as Xavier is the second best offensive rebounders in the Big East so far behind us).
If Josh can get Stainbrook in foul trouble (he's fouled out of two games already) and we can do a better job preventing Trevon Bluiett (42.2% from 3) and Myles Davis (48.8% from 3) from getting good looks than we did against Indiana, we should able to beat Xavier.

It looks like we'll be wearing gray for this one, based upon this snippet from the Xavier forum, posted on December 16:
"CINCINNATI – Xavier Athletics announced today that it will hold a New Year’s Eve Party prior to the BIG EAST Conference men’s basketball opener against Georgetown. The game will highlight the BIG EAST’s New Year’s Eve Marathon on FOX Sports 1 and will tip-off at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31. Fans registering for the New Year’s Eve Party will enjoy a fun filled evening with Dinner by the Bite food stations, champagne toast, unlimited soda and New Year’s Eve party favors. A cash bar will be available and entertainment includes music and an interactive photo booth. Doors will open early at 8:00 p.m. only for those registered for the party. Cost is $35 per person if you already have a game ticket or $50 for the dinner party and game ticket. Seating for the dinner party is limited and registration is required. Click here for more information or to register. Xavier men’s basketball will also debut an alternate black game jersey and will wear black for the first time since the 2002-03 season."

Have a feeling this game will be pretty empty....
Woof. Who schedules this game for New Year's Eve. Terrible.

Yeh, they are playing FGCU right now and they are just running up and down the floor. Definitely think we benefit with a 10pm NYE game. As much as college kids love partying and drinking, I'm going to guess being at a game at midnight on NYE isn't high on the party circuit. If we can control tempo, I think we can grab this one. Would be a huge road win. Really think we need to grab 4-5 road BE games this year.

The Xavier fan base is not happy with the 10pm start time on New Year's Eve; it seems that the Musketeers were offered the option of a 10pm home game, or starting the season with a road game, and opted for the home game. Xavier fans suspect that they will not have a sellout despite the opponent, and that the home court advantage will be negated.

Will be a very tough game for the Hoyas. Xavier has an inside game and an outside game. Their three point shooting is at around 40%. All their starters but one make FTs at a 70+% rate and the team is making more than half its FG attempts. Obviously this will be a challenge for Smith as Xavier can matchup with him. DSR must continue the accurate shooting he showed in the last half against Indiana. Finally, it will be more difficult to go small against Xavier than most other BE teams.

Ha I mean I know WHY it is at 10 I'm just saying it's dumb on fox's part as I can't imagine it will be a high ratings game either

I am just hoping that I can stay up until the end of the game. Or that my wife falls asleep so that I don't have to DVR the second half and watch Ryan Seacrest!

Can't assume a 10 am game is going to be a high ratings game either! Or are you assuming that Georgetown should be a marquee game in the 5 game lineup, and thus scheduled earlier? I can see that. Last year, we were the 6 pm game.

If BE officials don't feel compelled to call 45-50 fouls a game, then we can start at noon and be done with the marathon by 10pm. Problem solved.

I also reckon nobody would object if we played the 5pm Marquette-DePaul game under first to eleven/make it-take it rules. This does raise the existential question of what exactly constitutes a marquee game in the Big East. And really, if such a thing exists, do you want to waste one of your two chances at it on a New Year's Eve night? We'd all be rather non-plussed if we were playing Villanova on Wednesday I assume.

It's interesting despite having 4 big guys (all 6'10) they are below average at protecting the rim. 193rd in blk%, 186th in 2pt% defense. They're even worse at defending the 3: 236th. They do use that size to pull in the 39th best defensive rebounding %. And they don't foul also 39th in that category. For reference Indiana defends the 3 considerably better and the 2 equally bad.
On the other end of the court they do a phenomenal job making 2pters 10th in the nation. Shoot 39% from 3. Surprisingly they do not draw fouls very well: 232nd. But they don't turn it over much 60th and do well on the boards 81st.
They've pretty much feasted on poor competition and fallen 3 times to mediocre to bad teams, so they're certainly beatable. Thing that concerns most is their 28th rated FT defense.

Xavier's 3 loses have been close games (4, 3 and 1 point margins) with the Auburn loss (Bruce Pearl) going into overtime. So they seem very dangerous.

Yeah, if we had the choice, Id rather we played on the road for this game. You gotta play 9 BE road games, and the more we play them while students are gone, the better it is Or we play Depaul at home, which we got fortunate to have last year. It's a nice gimmick, I suppose, but Im glad we dont have the 6, 8 or 10pm game at Verizon. There would be about 5,000 people at the game, and only because they gave away 2,000 tickets.

Now I feel like I really have a handle on our next opponent, something I was really worried about.
