I'm looking forward to the matchup between Smith and Stainbrook. It's not exactly Hibbert versus Oden but it should be exciting if the refs let them play. Cintas Center is a tough place to open the conference in. I'm also interested to see how many minutes Bowen plays. He's averaged 15 to 20 minutes per game prior to the IU game...will that stay the same? It'd be great to see him deliver another high impact game.

Need to come out strong and smart, and also control the foul situation. Very big game.

I'm still Editeded about us blowing the game @ Xavier last year. Up 13 at half. Led all the way up until 5 minutes left in the game and ended up losing by 13! We went scoreless for the final 6 minutes! 16-0 run to end the game! Gah!

Matt Stainbrook doesn't spend much more time on the court than Joshua Smith; Stainbrook is only averaging 25.8 minutes per game compared to Smith's 22.3, and Stainbrook has already fouled out twice this season. While Josh has been in foul trouble, he hasn't been DQ'd yet (Hopkins has fouled out three times, and DSR, Trawick and White once each). If Stainbrook has twice fouled out against lesser competition, I wouldn't be surprised if he got into early foul trouble against Smith. Whichever team can keep their starting center on the court longest may well be the team that wins.

I agree. This team does not go scoreless for 6 minutes against Xavier. THIS IS NOT LAST YEARS'S TEAM!!! These guys are some much more aggressive and have so many more scoring options than last year's bunch. Xavier will have the honor of being the first BE team to see the difference.

Thanks, prhoya, for the walk down memory lane.
Jabril Trawick fractured his jaw one week before the first Xavier game last year when he fouled a Providence player with his face at center court. Reggie Cameron played 27 minutes starting in his place, scoring 13 points. We clearly missed Trawick, and had not fully adjusted to life sans Brilly. When the rematch came five weeks later, Trawick was back in the lineup (playing 34 minutes and scoring 13 points) and it became a good old fashioned whooping.; Cameron played one minute in the rematch.

My gut feeling tells me that if we play Hopkins on Stainbrook we win by 10+. Hopkins has been a beast this year and it's probably due to him defending Smith in practice.

The Marquette-De Paul game should be the 10:00 game, as that's a 9:00 central start time. No way an eastern time zone game should be starting at 10:00 on New Year's Eve. Stupid.

My gut tells me that we will be seeing some Hops and others defend against Stainbrook. As the Indiana game showed, we need Josh for late in the game. I am most concern about him picking up little ticky tacky fouls, running over people or catching them with an errant elbow.

The good news is that, for a change, the opponent has a big that should be similarly prone to garbage fouls. Team stats, to this point, can be a bit misleading. Something tells me that Xavier's numbers look better than that team is. Granted, I've seen only one of their games this year but, judging by the tone of their message boards (clearly, not a particularly good barometer) and that one performance, I think their offensive stats are a bit inflated due to less than great competition.

Joshua is the more skilled player and it's not all that close.

I went to the second blowout game last year and was not impressed with Xavier or Stanbrook. Like I said in an earlier post I think Xavier will have the honor of welcoming the 2015 edition of GU basketball to the Big East. Geez, did we forget last year we were playing Lubick and Domingo and Reggie. Say hello to our new little friends--Josh, Peak, White, and a healthy Trawick!!!

The one positive for them, though, is they are playing at home. From everything I've heard they have a loud, raucous bunch of basketball lovers at Xavier. They are going to be motivated.

Probably not on New Year's Eve they won't. It sounds like a really fun way to celebrate NY's Eve in Cincy to me. I bet there will be a big crowd. I guess we'll find out.

Last year we were bombing threes against them and then just fell flat. They also have some new tools in their toolbox and for the second straight game we face an Indianapolis Park Tudor player in Bluiett who I think is their leading scorer. We put pressure on these guys and we should start this season 3-0 before heading up to Provy for a tough but very winnable game.

This is the first team since Wisconsin that can matchup with Smith and Hopkins inside. This game will be a true test of our ability to stay out of foul trouble in the paint. Xavier has three bigs that play alot and play physical. If Smith and Hopkins sit for long stretches then the smaller lineup with Copeland playing the 5 could really struggle. Hitting some outside shots will be critical to pulling them out, as I doubt very much there will be much room given to Smith down low at the outset as they will try to protect their bigs from foul trouble, as well.
