Still musing over the tea leaves, and I think I figured out what's coming down for Syracuse. The NCAA wanted to impose a two-year ban on post-season play, for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, but to let SU participate this season. SU sees that they are, at best, a bubble team, and more likely headed for the NIT, and was willing to impose the ban for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. They could not come to an agreement, and so Syracuse today announced the self-imposed ban for the 2014-15 season. They know a second year is coming, but they want to be eligible for the 2016-17 season, and figure that the NCAA would not impose an additional two-year ban on top of a self-imposed one-year ban. It's a roll of the dice by SU. SO the NCAA will just tack on one year (the 2015-16 season), penalize SU some scholarships for a couple of years, vacate fourteen wins (apparently the games that Fab Melo played in when he was ineligible) and call it a day. Then again, I could be way, way off. Hopefully you are just on the light side. This whole self-imposed ban in a year they would likely be an NIT team is ridiculous. I live about an hour from Syracuse and can just hear everyone saying how great they are for doing this themselves. Hope the NCAA does do 2 more years, vacates wins and takes away scholarships all over the place. Hope Boeheim has so many fingers pointed at him that he is forced to leave the entire city of Syracuse....even the state of NY.....with his finger up his nose. If tomorrow is indeed the day, I can't wait!

Some comments from the twitterverse:
Matt Ehalt: So Syracuse has self-imposed a ban in a year in which they will likely be in the NIT/won't win the ACC? That doesn't seem like punishment.
Matt Ehalt: If u compare this to UConn's punishment for APR scores (which made no sense because they changed the rule), this is basically a slap on the wrist.
Matt Ehalt: I mean, I get what Syracuse is doing, but banning their worst team in ages and not next year's team is basically getting away free.
Ralph Vacchiano: Wait, we had a shot at the postseason? RT @espncbb: Syracuse self-imposes postseason ban this year in response to NCAA investigation.
Ralph Vacchiano: In honor of Syracuse banning itself from this year's NCAA Basketball tournament, I'm banning myself from Wimbledon and The Masters.
Brandon Prunty: Only in college can a school escape greater punishment by policing itself after the fact. Imagine if the legal system worked that way.
Chris Carlin: For my own mistakes, I am self-imposing a ban on going to the gym. Of course, I probably wasn't going anyway, so it's rather convenient.
ChrisShearnShow: No Dean it's cool Syracuse imposed their own ban #doublesecretprobatoion
Jay Bilas: While NCAA orchestrates a public shaming of Syracuse, NCAA won't say a bad word about Graham Spanier, Emmert's chair for athletic welfare.

Why is there a negotiation at all? Just mete out the punishment.

Someone needs to remind the Dukie of two items:
1. Syracuse is, and ever shall be, without shame.
2. They have had this coming for decades.

I'm not a fan of auto racing, but I'm told that a large component of the appeal lies in watching the massive collision and resulting destruction. The SU board is like that right now. I really enjoy those posters that believe that the ACC is going to step in and rescue them from penalty imposition. I do feel like I have to wash in industrial-strength disinfectant after perusing the latest posts. Actually, I think this has some truth and that some of the thrill is in the collisions. I was at the state fair of NY in 1968, and one of their attractions was a dirt track stock car race. I attended and about every lap, the race had to stop because of a collision. I grew bored of this, but the fans seemed to eat it up. I didn't have to be bored for long, because a piece of one of the cars hit me in the head resulted in a fractured skull. Oh, yes, the location was Syracuse. Another reason why to hate the orange.

Has there ever been a coach whose program was sanctioned twice by the NCAA? If so - did the coach keep his job??

Just saw a friend of mine on Facebook who is a huge SU fan make a post showing their disgust for the self-imposed ban.....basically saying it was ridiculous because they weren't likely going anyway. When SU fans call out the program.....you know it's bad. They will make excuses/apologize for just about anything.

What a great move by Cuse. Now they don't have to host an NIT game, AND they saved themselves from a trip to Greensboro next month. Genius...
I hope the NCAA sacks up here and adds more.

The CBI must be devastated. The CBI is an independent tournament , separate from the NCAA. I believe SU is eligible!

That's too bad. I almost looked forward to seeing a matchup of Syracuse and Norfolk State before 4,000 people at the Carrier Dome in the CBI. That would have been a hoot.
On a separate matter, the moderators at syracusefan.com shut down the registration of new accounts yesterday at 4:30 pm, when SU advised its athletes by email that the self-imposed post-season ban was forthcoming. They were looking to avoid trolls coming onsite; they never thought that there would be early infiltration of their ranks by the likes of FrazierFanatic and me.
It also appears that Jim Boeheim has been contacting recruits in the 2016 class that the ban will not affect them. . .query as to whether that means that the 2015 recruits will be impacted by either loss of scholarships or post-season ban next year.

This is a joke. They aren't making the tourney this year. They should ban them for next year and see if guys like their incoming recruits and McCullough decide to stick around. Offer a free transfer provision a la Penn State. I love how they report that no current players were involved. You know who was involved, the hall of fame coach and the administration that have made a mockery year in and out of rules. AWFUL!

Columbia remember, this is only Syracuse's own ban. The NCAA has not issued its report nor reported its sanctions yet. Many believe that Syracuse is throwing up a Hail Mary in the hope they will somehow sway public opinion and force the NCAA to agree to accept the one year.
At least one Syracuse media rep has indicated that the NCAA is quite unhappy by this preemptive strike by Syracuse. Let's hope that is the case, and there is another year to add on. There are also other sanctions that will apply.
Patience grasshopper.
