That's too bad. I almost looked forward to seeing a matchup of Syracuse and Norfolk State before 4,000 people at the Carrier Dome in the CBI. That would have been a hoot. On a separate matter, the moderators at syracusefan.com shut down the registration of new accounts yesterday at 4:30 pm, when SU advised its athletes by email that the self-imposed post-season ban was forthcoming. They were looking to avoid trolls coming onsite; they never thought that there would be early infiltration of their ranks by the likes of FrazierFanatic and me. It also appears that Jim Boeheim has been contacting recruits in the 2016 class that the ban will not affect them. . .query as to whether that means that the 2015 recruits will be impacted by either loss of scholarships or post-season ban next year. As appropriate as that would be, I don't think it means that. The 2015 recruits have already signed LOI's. The 2016 recruits are still open targets, he needs to make sure that they are not scared off.

A question that has been appearing on the SU board is whether the four 2015 recruits that have signed LOI's (a fifth has not yet done so) could get out of their LOI's based upon the sanctions. My question would be if there is a reduction in available scholarships such that SU cannot bring in all four 2015 recruits that have signed LOS's, what happens? Does SU have to release a recruit from a signed LOI? I guess we'll get some answers at some point.

I doubt the NCAA would take away scholarships that were already given out if they could avoid it, so they'd have scholarship reductions start with the 2016-17 season. If additional year(s) are added to the post season ban, I'm assuming recruits would be able to get out of their LOI if they chose to. Also, if next year is banned as well, rising seniors should be able to transfer without having to sit out a year (at least if the UCONN APR ban is any indication).

Kids with scholarships starting in August won't have them ripped away.

More from the twitterverse: Andy Martino @martinonydn · 6m 6 minutes ago Yeah. This is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened on Boeheim's watch. Andy Martino @martinonydn · 7m 7 minutes ago Get a load of this SI.com headline: "Syracuse's postseason ban leaves questions for Jim Boeheim's legacy" Andy Martino @martinonydn · 16m 16 minutes ago So if I'm understanding this Syracuse thing from a baseball perspective, it's like Mets taking themselves out of running for World Series?

Even SU fans are appalled at this move by Manny's. It's got to be pretty bad if it offends even them.

Really interested to see what comes of this. People over at Nunes think the self-imposed ban is all that is going to happen. If that's the case.....what a joke the whole NCAA really is.

This was an interesting part of that article-- Rumor: Syracuse should take a postseason ban now, when it doesn't have a strong NCAA Tournament contender. Reality: Once a school enters the hearing portion of the investigation it loses the power to self-impose a punishment.

Still musing over the tea leaves, and I think I figured out what's coming down for Syracuse. The NCAA wanted to impose a two-year ban on post-season play, for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, but to let SU participate this season. SU sees that they are, at best, a bubble team, and more likely headed for the NIT, and was willing to impose the ban for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. They could not come to an agreement, and so Syracuse today announced the self-imposed ban for the 2014-15 season. They know a second year is coming, but they want to be eligible for the 2016-17 season, and figure that the NCAA would not impose an additional two-year ban on top of a self-imposed one-year ban. It's a roll of the dice by SU. SO the NCAA will just tack on one year (the 2015-16 season), penalize SU some scholarships for a couple of years, vacate fourteen wins (apparently the games that Fab Melo played in when he was ineligible) and call it a day. Then again, I could be way, way off. Would be happy to wipe that 51-58 loss in the booth away back in February 2011 and more importantly the loss in OT at the Dome a year later. And while that doesn't really change our fortunes all that much in the grand scheme...wouldn't that mean that Cuse forfeits its 2012 regular season Big East crown (crown going to Marquette, the runner up)?

SU keeps saying that all of the violations occurred prior to the 2012 season, so (if they are right. . .) the 2012 Big East regular season crown will probably not be impacted.
Then again, I could be way off.
I will say this in favor of SU (and this may be the only time I ever do so): the NCAA has been investigating the Syracuse program for years, and the hearing before the Committee on Infractions took place at the end of October. This should have come to a conclusion long ago, and it is unfair to the athletes to have this delayed as long as it has been. Irrespective of whether Syracuse deserves the sanctions (and make no mistake, it does), the time delay by the NCAA is wrong. Hopefully they'll move forward on the academic fiasco at North Carolina more expeditiously.
