We will rescind the suspension if he links a video of him dancing to Wake Me Up.

I don't know too many of those bands, but this thread has been entertaining!

I cannot overstate my level of disappointment in the direction in which this thread has gone. I'm not going to stick up for Wham!, but we really have sullied the good names of some underrated 80s bands through this association with teams we don't like. I'm not afraid to say, nodak, I expect better of you. I think you are giving some grudging respect to Duran Duran with the St. John's association, but it appears that most of the rest (and maybe even that one) are intended as insults. But I'll tell you what: I'll take Spandau Ballet, Soft Cell, a-Ha and heck, even Men Without Hats over so many other worse bands from that time, it's not even funny. Madonna, Corey Hart, The Outfield, Europe, Bon freakin' Jovi, hell pretty much any hair metal band, Huey Lewis, Whitney Houston (my own personal Villanova nominee..for obvious reasons), Bryan Adams, Journey...I could really go on forever. For crying out loud, the 80s gave us Richard Marx and Milli Vanilli, and yet you have to go and besmirch the name of a pretty darn good band like a-Ha. (Yes, "Take on Me," has become a bit of a joke, but Hunting High and Low is a downright quality album overall). I do think The Clash is an OK comparison for Georgetown, but only if you're limiting it to the 80s. (Except that The Clash didn't do very much of note after 1982.) Georgetown today is more of a U2 type: pretty well respected by everyone, but kind of still searching to regain those days gone by when they used to rule the known world. Points well-taken, Boz. I'll respond. The U2 reference is outstanding. Peaked in mid 80s, then lost their way. If there ever was an album that is the white jersey and teal era it is Zooropa. (Ever seen Macphisto and Esh together? I didn't think so.) Then a late renaissance in the 2000s trying to harken back to the glory days. Fits very well. The other band associations weren't meant merely as insults. If you look at my iPhone I've got songs from probably 85% of those bands on there. Take Spandau Ballet. I think "True" is nearly the quintessential fashion band song. Awesome for what it is, but Seton Hall just never scared me. Gave me the Euro poseur vibe. I don't hate them, but pretty harmless. Same with BC and A-ha. No hate, not really worthy of meteor status. I can take a little of them, but not too much and can easily get annoying. UConn--pretty decent just like Soft Cell and "Tainted Love" (great song to do as a rock cover, BTW) but they are tainted by well being UConn and back in the day they were a soft team. Provvy--dreaming about being like Georgetown. I have to admit that "Life in a Northern Town" is another of those quintessential 80s one hit wonders that I can't help like, and I have to be a bit jealous of Billy the Kid beating us in 1987 so that factored in. Pitt--putting Safety Dance with "Send it in Jerome" just seemed like a funny juxtaposition to me. Villanova and Culture Club--yes I really want to hurt them after 1985. 'Cuse--many many potential nominees here, but there had to be some grudging respect about their success on the court. It couldn't be a totally sucky band, just one I couldn't fathom or understand. I just don't like Wham's music, even though lots of people seemed to. I almost went with Milli Vanilli here, but there were really just fake and bad, although thinking more about it Cuse has fake students and Rony Seikaly, so maybe...

OK. All is forgiven. Your explanations make a lot of sense. I guess maybe I got the mis-impression of derision based on the responses, more than I did from the original post. Which means I am severely disappointed in EVERYONE ELSE AT HOYATALK!!! (Also, Simple Minds was great. Not Tears for Fears great, but not too far behind that.)

Fair enough that the Clash did not do much after '82, and I see your U2 analogy (though I don't think we want the slogan on next year's shirts to say "Still respected but especially relevant"). Still, I think the Clash captures the Hoya Paranoia of the 80s Hoyas more than U2, and they did have a hit in 2007 with MIA's "Paper Planes." Come to think of it: "Go Straight to Hell" might work as a t-shirt slogan. Another 80s band candidate for the Hoyas might be Public Enemy. T-shirt slogan: "It takes a nation of millions (or John Cahill) to hold us back."

U2 seems like a good one until you look at the sales numbers for their albums. 2 of their top 4 selling albums happened in decades other than the 80s. They were very popular in the early 90s after Achtung Baby came out and did monster business on tour after All That You Can't Leave Behind came out. If they had an ebb to their popularity, it wasn't like other bands. U2 tends to be just about the biggest band in the world when they release a decent album. That Zooropa garbage and marketing campaign, however, were egregious. I don't think the Hoyas have had enough success to warrant the U2 comparison. It's not off by much but there's gotta be a better one....

Duke is more like the Bangles, being bitches who were largely beloved by the media but not real music fans...

Are we talking about what 80s band best represents Duke in the 80s? Or what 80s band best represents Duke overall?
Remember, for most of the 80s, Duke was the pretty good team who could get almost all the way there, but never reach the top. Remember when lots of people thought Coach K could never win the big one?
Poison comes to mind. Made up of complete d-bags, loved by many idiots, hated by just as many (if not more) people, and despite being popular, never really considered seriously as a great band.
Not a perfect comparison, but that was the first one that came to mind. I think the comparison falls apart in a wider time frame, but I think it's OK for Duke in the 80s.
