And, Steve Lavin is, and always has been, a horrendous coach. He's a recruiter. That's all. When he was sidelined as a coach while dealing with cancer, the Johnnies weren't suffering as a result. Lavin hasn't left because he likely doesn't have offers coming in. And St. John's needs a guy like him that brings in talent and succeeds despite the lack of coaching so that it, once again, becomes a destination school for HS players. As a conference mate, I personally (somehow) root for the Johnnies even though I clearly remember hating them like I continue to hate Syracuse. We need them to reestablish themselves as a top tier program. It would be great for our new Big East and it will also allow me to go back to hating them like I always have.

I'm more than willing to happily admit that I didn't see this one coming. Also, repeat after me: Steve Lavin is not, and never has been, a good coach. I have nothing against him personally, and continue to wish him good luck at St. John's, but as a coach, well, he's somewhere just north of Esh. Maybe. How is your boy balla doing after another DSR fest? Oh, yes, he doesn't belong in Div. 1, right? Is he giving props to him or, like with Roscoe, silence is best? As for Lavin, like Esh, it's always easier to coach from the announcer's box. The announcers are always right. He devalued St. Johns as a legitimate opponent, and said that DSR comes up big against really crappy teams, but almost always plays poorly against better opposition. Frankly, I don't totally diasgree with this position (but think it's overstated), but pointed out that he is, at worst, our second best offensive player, so we have to hope for his continued success.

Can someone give me the scoop on Reggie Williams son that is the new walkon. Didn't I read on this board somewhere that he played for his father in high school? This is from the Hoya.comThe son of Georgetown legend Reggie Williams, the younger Williams was a late addition to the roster; in fact, he wasn’t even on the roster handed out to reporters at the Hoyas’ media day. Rumors that he was preparing to join the team, however, had been spreading since the summer, when Williams turned in several weekends of solid performances at the Kenner League. In an interview with 247Sports over the summer, Williams said that he had wanted to walk on for Georgetown since he played for his father at local Archbishop Carroll High School. Faced with a squeezed roster, Thompson III reportedly advised Williams to work on his grades in preparation for a potential spot on the team as a sophomore. Fans shouldn’t expect much playing time for the sophomore, who won’t be travelling with the team, but his arrival is an intriguing next chapter for a family already steeped in Georgetown lore.

The "we need them to reestablish themselves as a top tier program" line is basically synonymous with "we think you're bad, but not, like, DePaul bad" right? And b/c why the heck not at this point, let's pit generations against each other: please explain to this 31 year old why I should care about St. John's. As in: has there been anything compelling about the Georgetown-St. John's "rivalry" since 1985? I'm being serious, though a little facetious. I just don't understand why it's that big a deal. I mean, I like the 80s and all but I'm pretty sure I can just fire up an a-ha record if I want to relive 1985.

As a younger fan, I agree that I also don't harbor much dislike of St. John's, but that's likely because in the time I've followed the team we have been dominant, with St. John's only rarely winning games. One of the reasons the Syracuse rivalry persisted for so long is that both teams played highly contested games - when both teams were good - over a long period of time.
That's why we cannot create new rivals (and why the so-called "rivalry" interleague games in baseball are largely silly). It just has to happen by both teams playing a lot of games with significant importance. That did happen between St. John's and Georgetown in the 1980s, but not really since then. Given the history, I think the idea of a "new" rivalry against them would be great, but it will only happen if they can perform on the court, which seems to be less than assured at the moment.
Right now, we really don't have any conference rivals, I think Villanova would be the closest. I think it can definitely develop over time, but as I said, it'll take a series of games against quality teams, and that simply takes a long time to develop.

I don't know that anyone has a compelling need to have a worlds-collide rivalry game with St. John's, but it would be very good for the conference if the program located in the media capital of the world could occasionally make the NCAAs.

If anything, we should be thankful to St. John's--if they hadn't beaten Esherick with six players suspended from a team that already was the worst in the Big East, who knows if JT3 would be the coach?

I mean, a-ha should not be the first band to come to mind when talking about reliving the 80s

A-Ha is definitely not top 5. In any case, rivalries make conferences. It's that simple. The most advantageous rivalry would be Georgetown/St. John's. As another poster mentioned, St. John's plays at the Garden and used to be a destination program. Georgetown doesn't have the reputation it used to either but we've (thankfully) not deteriorated to a level anywhere near that of the Johnnies. Both teams play in big markets with lots of local talent..... talent that both programs often see go to other schools. An improved St. John's squad helps the conference and helps recruiting if they become what they once were. It used to be a selling point to play the Redmen in the Garden twice a year on the biggest stage in college basketball.
Also, some of those games back in the 80's were epic. Games like that draw attention and fans and excitement and dollars. You don't have to remember the rivalries to realize that rivalries are important in a league that, so far, is searching for an identity to an extent and is also viewed as less than it was. We need good programs to generate interest and to be relevant. One team can't carry it (right Memphis?). It's easy to hate Lavin but the guy can't coach to save his ass. Why they didn't try to run and keep running against us is egregious. And that's 2 years running where they allowed the Hoyas to keep them from running. It wasn't even that really... they didn't even really try to run. That team can't shoot and they can't play half-court offense. They HAVE to run to win or compete. I expect a very different look at MSG in February.

You have to drop back to the late 70s to find real music and the meaning of a St. Johns rivalry. (Curtis Redding got the hot dog treatment in McDonough as well)

You may recall the songs "Safe Capital Centre Home," "Rock the Carrier Dome," "Washington Bullets," (an ode to our housemates), "Ewing Can't Fail," "The Guns of Broadnax," and "Clampdown" (about our defense).

I cannot overstate my level of disappointment in the direction in which this thread has gone.
I'm not going to stick up for Wham!, but we really have sullied the good names of some underrated 80s bands through this association with teams we don't like.
I'm not afraid to say, nodak, I expect better of you.
I think you are giving some grudging respect to Duran Duran with the St. John's association, but it appears that most of the rest (and maybe even that one) are intended as insults.
But I'll tell you what: I'll take Spandau Ballet, Soft Cell, a-Ha and heck, even Men Without Hats over so many other worse bands from that time, it's not even funny.
Madonna, Corey Hart, The Outfield, Europe, Bon freakin' Jovi, hell pretty much any hair metal band, Huey Lewis, Whitney Houston (my own personal Villanova nominee..for obvious reasons), Bryan Adams, Journey...I could really go on forever.
For crying out loud, the 80s gave us Richard Marx and Milli Vanilli, and yet you have to go and besmirch the name of a pretty darn good band like a-Ha. (Yes, "Take on Me," has become a bit of a joke, but Hunting High and Low is a downright quality album overall).
I do think The Clash is an OK comparison for Georgetown, but only if you're limiting it to the 80s. (Except that The Clash didn't do very much of note after 1982.)
Georgetown today is more of a U2 type: pretty well respected by everyone, but kind of still searching to regain those days gone by when they used to rule the known world.
