If Miami doesn't fall asleep on defense guarading Kelly, then Duke loses by quite a few. sadly, they have a compelling argument since the aforementioned UVa, MD, Miami, and whatever their other loss was, came without Kelly. He is not only back, but obviously playing well. I'm fine with being in the top five, and while I think we can beat anyone in the country, I am shocked peoople don't think there are five or more teams better than us in the country. I think there are seven or eight, but we are certainly among those ten or so teams that can win a 'chip this year. At least it seems like Bilas evaluates who he thinks the best teams are from week to week instead of just shuffling people around based on winning and losing alone.

THB is right on the Pomeroy rankings. I know capping MOV makes it less accurate on the aggregate, but I still think there's something there -- the system requires he treat every team the same and in that assumption is that every team treats cupcakes or blowouts the same. I'm not surprised in aggregate, capping blowouts doesn't help, but it may actually still be a flaw. It also generally overrates Duke and Wisconsin and I think every team that is remarkable consistent on effort. I always think of this as an NBA phenomenon. Every year there's a team that performs really well in the regular season because they go 100% while the very best teams pace themselves for the long playoffs. Leading to the harder working team to be overrated when they face the sandbagging team -- which is now at 100% effort. In other words, watch out for an upset in any NC State-Wisconsin-type tournament matchup.

Sagarin provides a useful example to show the differences between a margin of victory based metric and a pure "won/loss, who did you beat and I don't care by how much metric" since it combines the two methodologies. Sagarin has a "Predictor" component in which we rank 14th and which is based on margin of victor. We are 16th in Pomeroy which is all margin of victory, but the difference between 14th and 16th is a tiny amount. Sagarin's other component is called ELO and does not consider margin of victory, and we rank 4th by that metric. To get a good sense of just how the start of the season hurt us follow the link to ESPN's BPI page for Georgetown which helpfully lists individual game BPIs (BPI is their attempt to play the margin of victory game with a couple of twists) espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/bpi/_/id/46/year/2013You can see the impact of some of our early season cupcake games where we did not crush the cupcake.

Also the article attacking Gonzaga's resume for the number 1 ranking is right on point. They haven't beaten a ton of great teams and play in a crappy conference. I watched that BYU game and they are awful. They had so many opportunities to win that game and took bad shot after bad shot. It was terrible. Youd think they were on the take so their conference would have a number one ranked team.

On Jan 21st in the AP poll, we were 9th in the "Others Receiving Votes" category, or 34th ranked. To make a 29 position jump in 6 weeks is an outstanding accomplishment! We've come a long way.

It is good to be Duke when you can go 1-1 with a loss to a team on the NCAA bubble and a narrow home win when one player has fluky shooting night and pick up 5 first-place votes you didn't have last week. espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings

W are closer to #2 than we are to #6. Just keep winning Hoyas and this all takes care of itself, as always.

Seems plausible.

When was the last time we were ranked in the Top 5 in both human polls and got first place votes?
Keep it rollin' Hoyas. Win win win.

I love that people are now talking about Indiana's OT victory over us in NY as a marquee win for them.

After the Pitt game, Georgetown was ranked 64th on Pomeroy, so that tells you how much of a drag the non-conference and 0-2 start is compared to other teams that ran up big scores against cupcakes and did not get creamed at home at the beginning of conference play.
