Is there a clock ticking on the start of construction? I seem to recall something around the time of the Zoning Commission's decision that we had to have shovels in the ground within a year of approval, which would have been April 2013. I haven't been able to find that in the previous ATF/IAC discussion threads, but I do find references to aiming to start within 18 months (which would be this coming October). If we're still $20-30 million short of the funds needed to start, it seems like we have to have a major campaign push soon or we'll miss that target as well.

And for a project that's been in the discussion pipeline for a decade and publicly announced over two years ago, videos like this are quietly posted without fanfare, as if the IAC is more "if" than "when". It's not fair but the legacy of failed facilities initiatives (Boathouse, MSF, track stadium, on-campus softball field) seems to hang over the publicity of this project. Either it's priority one or it isn't. (See my post on the Pro & College thread for an athletic building project announced today.) It's priority one as far as new buildings go, but it cannot really be singled out as a higher priority than other items in the capital campaign. I understand why, not least of which is the optics of a University signaling that an intercollegiate athletics facility is fundraising priority number one, when there are countless other, directly academic-related needs that could use those funds. And, you know, the University's financial picture is such that they tried to institute a year-long pay-freeze on staff this spring before the uproar led to them backing off and allowing an increase so small it doesn't cover inflation. I'm the last person who needs to be told that fundraising isn't zero sum and blah blah etc. etc., but I do understand some of the... restraint. Also, in fairness, the boathouse failure is not wholly or even mostly the University's fault, although it does seem like insisting on one particular spot has not been a great approach. Well, I guess Lee E. Reed has no such hesitation about calling it the number one priority lol. Greetings from McDonough Arena -
We're in the final weeks of our spring competitions, with many student-athletes balancing their final exams and post-season play.
Our coaches and student-athletes have experienced tremendous success on and off the fields, courts, rivers, pools, and tracks this academic year and we are pleased to be able to share with them (and you) the progress we are making towards the construction of the university's number one capital priority - the Intercollegiate Athletics Center (IAC).
The IAC is a 144,000 square foot practice and training facility that will transform the daily experience of all 750 student-athletes at Georgetown University. The new facility will house:
new practice courts, locker rooms, team meeting rooms, lounge areas and coaches’ offices for men’s and women’s basketball; weight training facility and sports medicine/training room areas for all varsity student-athletes; student-athlete academic center, auditorium and team meeting facilities for all varsity sports programs; new home for the Georgetown Athletic Hall of Fame and additional reception space to honor the University’s rich athletic tradition and history; and additional locker room areas for the men’s & women’s soccer and lacrosse programs.
Please click on the link below to get sneak peek at what is to come:
www.guhoyas.com/athletic-development/build_the_IAC.html The IAC builds on the tradition and history of Georgetown Athletics, honoring our past, celebrating our present, and building our future.
The time is now to invest in Georgetown Athletics. We hope you will partner with us.
Hoya Saxa,
Lee Reed Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

Did anyone notice in the video presentation just released that there are only 4 final four banners (including the white one for the championship year in 1984)? I hope they are not going to make the same mistake they did in McDonough, and not include 1947 with the the ones for '82, '84, '85, and '07 (the one for '47 is off to the side of the court with the banners for the years the Hoyas made the NCAAs).

The pre-1972 NBA alumni are not included on the McDonough wall, either.

Finally got to see the video. Wow, this facility will definitely put us on even-footing with recruiting. I'm glad I'm supporting it and hope everyone chips in! The way I thought about it: how much do I spend on food/drinks and how much enjoyment does it bring me? Then, I thought about how much enjoyment Hoya basketball brought me (i.e. much more than food/drinks) and knew I should give a proportional amount to the IAC to keep that experience going!

Does anyone have any more info on where we are with funding for the IAC? The building looks beautiful, but it will be a great day when we can tell recruits this will be happening by X date because it is fully funded.

Depressed that the IAC video now shows a parking lot next to the facility. The earlier one had grass there. Campus could really use some more grassy spaces; I hope the administration will reconsider this. Hopefully, a donor will attach that string to his or her gift. Combine this with the Moaist dorm proposal and you can see the work of souless bureaucrats and bean-counters in Healy, who have no feel for the aesthetic campus environment.

I was told that besides the green space that will exist between the business school and the new science building there are eventual plans to replace the parking lot between the hospital and Darnall with green space.

Really? By whom?? (We can take this off-line if you can't say) The reason I'm so curious is because when I asked why the useless Kober-Cogan Building and/or Lot A - that's the parking lot between the hospital and Darnall - couldn't be used as the location of the new dorm, I was told straight-up that MedStar owns the building and parking lot and have their own plans for it.

Yeah, that will never happen. Medstar has control over that parking lot. In any event, that is not a great location for grassy space, as it is surrounded by ugly buildings. If we have some sway over its use, why not keep it as a parking lot and allow athletic employees to park there, so the space in front of McDonough can be turned into a quad?

Eh, it probably makes more sense to have athletic employees park near the athletic buildings and then have grassy space closer to a dorm (Darnall), classroom building (St. Mary's), and many off-campus students (the Burleith contingent). If the MedStar lot is not available, then that's another story, but if it is an option, I would probably make that green before sticking a "quad" between McDonough, the IAC, and the woods to the west.

Sure, MedStar has plans for it but if it doesn't get into Georgetown's post-2017 campus plan, nothing moves forward. In theory, MedStar could build a new hospital right on the lot, but the ensuing loss of parking and the use of heavy equipment along Reservoir Road would be an huge issue with the neighborhood gentry.

It's definitely a classic Georgetown move to create a controversy that angers alumni and students so that any momentum in fundraising on the IAC gets immediately lost
