Class tomorrow?.. Really? I'd rather believe they all got stuck in class tonight. I can swallow that...but to rest up for tomorrow....please.
It was actually sad to see how empty the student sections were for two top 25 teams....really sad. I feel for the players, they should get more support...esspecially as they r playing so well now.

This discussion has been talked about to death. Here are the facts:
1) The student section is twice the size that it used to be now that both sides are open. It holds probably 3,000 people. Total student body is about 15,000, so that means 1 in 5 kids has to go to the game to fill up the student section. Given that probably half the students are dorks (it is Georgetown), then roughly 1 out of every 2 kids with an interest in the team has to go to the games to fill up the studen section. That is high.
2) No transportation to the games
3) Difficult to booze before/after games for underage kids
If I was in school, I would have been at the game, but there are plenty of factors that go into why the student sections are not packed every game aside from the students not being fans. When I was in school (Esh days) it was rare when the student section was even close to full and it was only half the size that it is now.

Those are all the same issues when the students do show. I'm not saying they need to camp out and what not. I'm saying that a mon night game against a top 25 team should get some love. Oh yeah....no way those are 3000 seats.

I wonder if OOC scheduling might play a role here as well. In the past, we've had some big games at home vs. marquee non-conference opponents. Most of our big games in recent years have been neutral site games and a few road. Who was our big home game this year? Tennessee? Last year it was Memphis? 2011 was Utah St, 2010 was Temple? With this kind of scheduling it's been taking well into the middle of the season before these kids are getting any kind of game with serious hype and interest at home. Something to really get excited about. Winning or at least playing well in some early season marquee home games creates some buzz. In 2005, I saw us play a surprisingly competitive game against #1 (I believe) Illinois at home (a game in which I actually put money on Illinois at -11). I left that game thinking, hey maybe this team isn't so bad. We also used to have the series with Duke. You look at this year, there really wasn't a very interesting game for the casual student fans to go see until Pitt. And we got thoroughly crushed. So the kids who spent all that time, effort, and money to get to the arena to see us get stomped go "This team sucks, I'm not coming back here." Having home and homes with teams like Kansas might have an effect on attendance. Let's go toe to toe with the big boys in our house.

When I was in school (Esh days) it was rare when the student section was even close to full and it was only half the size that it is now. With the current set-up behind both baskets (which it has been for most games since 2005), I believe the overall student sections hold about 2,200. This is very large for a school of our size, with an undergraduate population of what I think is about 7,000. We filled it up pretty consistently from 2006-08, and still do for big weekend games like Louisville and St. John's. That said, I don't think there's that much shame in drawing only, oh, say 1,000 students on a weeknight. I would expect that to be higher for a top 25 matchup, but what can you do. From the looks on TV, it looks like we definitely only drew in the few hundreds for Providence and Seton Hall. I fear the student turnout for our next home game, next Wednesday vs. DePaul. But I don't think tonight was as bad as people have posted. Those that did show up sounded loud. It's just those empty seats at the top of the student sections that are an eyesore (and the TV camera will always find them with the way our sections are set up). And the fact that our student section does a good job of wearing gray and standing out, which makes empty seats more noticeable. (Note: Don't even think about changing the WAG shirt to anything other than gray.) This doesn't mean we shouldn't still try to boost student turnout. But it's possible that, for a school of our size, with an abnormally large student section in an off-campus facility, we just greatly outperformed in terms of our student fans for many years, and have now finally regressed back to the mean.

The students who were there last night did an excellent job, especially with the off the court chant. I thought the turnout was fine for a Monday night game. The key is that the ones who come are loud and engaged - these were.

However, don't confuse the Stonewalls with the students. Many chants emanating from that side of the arena start in 118. Including nearly every dead ball Hoya Saxa which seems to take 10 HOYAS to wake the other side up.

Certainly didn't mean to forget the Stonewalls, who are excellent instigators. Of course, they were recently students too.

I'll say it as well - the people there last night both student and otherwise - were great. it was loud pretty much throughout.
Question - who are the stonewalls? Are they the crew on the baseline closest to the visiting bench, that usually have 4 or 5 guys waving flags? I assumed this was some type of international group? I thought the flag waving thing was a soccer thing -
whoever they are - I like them. they seem really into it - and i have no doubt start their share of chants.
The "off the court chant" last night was fantastic. Was so happy when Buzz finally picked up a tech.

Well the students are usually in the library grinding at that time...and if if not mistaken some people still have exams. The students showed up last night, the rest of the crowd was a little thin...

Student sections were definitely disappointing, especially with those who did make it getting there so late for nationally televised game. Is there any serious promotion for these games on campus? Any ideas on how to get the students motivated?
That said, when I was a youngster the students hardly came out in droves. Then again, we also had to get carted to Landover.
In more pleasant news, I think the non-student fans made a pretty good showing last night. And thank you, Stonewalls.
