I think this is worthy of one of my first posts: Last night at the Seton Hall game there were maybe 50 students there. What happened? This is quite frankly an insult to our team that has been building some nice momentum lately. HoyaBlue, we need you to step up!!

It was not raining before the game, and we had no problem getting there. The midweek Providence game had a similar poor turnout...

There were more people in the loyalty society section than the student section where I was sitting. I explained to a very shocked student that when I was a student a few years back, both sides of the student section were filled all of the way up and they had to open seats in the 400s because so many people came. The apathy of the student body these days is really a shame but I guess there's not much else at fault other than the fact that we haven't had very successful seasons in almost 4 years--the entire team the current student body has been there. Oh well

Our student fan base is pathetic. I always cringe when they show camera angles of the student section.

It's a real shame that the students can't come out to support their fellow students who are intercollegiate athletes, who put in a great deal of time and effort to represent Georgetown. As an oldtimer from the Cap Centre days, I think we had better student attendance taking many buses out there. Now, the students can't get half way across town???

That being said student turnout is absolutely pathetic. We've talked at length as to possible reasons, but it's just inexcusable

Oh well We haven't had very successful seasons in 4 years?? Is that a joke? Tournament success maybe not but we've been a top 10 team at some point (not this year) Over the past four years we have not had consistency and at times the games have been painful to watch. My freshman year was the final four year and we had amazing attendance for the next couple of years... So yes, the lack of consistency and poor tournament play can qualify as lack of success/excitement for the casual student fan and this student body needs another good tournament run to reignite the fan base... And to your polls comment, the only poll that matters is the one at the beginning of April and frankly we haven't made it out of the 2nd tournament weekend in march madness since 2007. I think many would agree that save for 2008, this team has been a little overrated when we crack the top 10 and its been because of where we started in the polls and who lost beneath us more so than any huge accomplishments.

The university used to provide buses to rosslyn and back from Verizon for the students who went to the games my first couple of years of undergrad. Then it transitioned to a few metro cards and now to nothing... Perhaps the university should take a role in this and provide transportation... It is embarrassing for the school and the program to have 50 students show up to a game at an NBA arena

As one who had to walk on his hands, uphill in both directions, in the snow to get to Cap Centre, I just don't understand...

The apathy of the student body these days is really a shame but I guess there's not much else at fault other than the fact that we haven't had very successful seasons in almost 4 years--the entire team the current student body has been there. Oh well This is only true if you judge "successful seasons" only by NCAA wins and losses. Unfortunately, that's the way casual fans view the sport, so unless we can make a post-season run, it's hard to see student attendance improving very much. The other problem is that this year's team (and last year's team) really had no buzz going into the season. Non-serious fans (or fair weather fans) are much less likely to come to the game if the team isn't expected to be great. I guarantee you if we were being promoted as the number 1 pre-season team, it would boost attendance considerably. The other thing to keep in mind is that our student body is relatively small. Let's say we have 6,000 students. You can probably cut out about 75% of those students who have no interest in basketball whatsoever. That leaves you with 1500 students. Let's say 60% of those students could not attend because of jobs, school work, studying, etc. That brings us to 600 students. Let's say 30% don't want to go all the way to the Verizon Center on a weeknight, and 40% simply don't care enough to attend a game against Seton Hall on a Wednesday. That brings us to 180 students. I am sure you could imagine other reasons people wouldn't go to push the number further down, but I think it illustrates the difficulties in getting people out to games, especially during the week.

Saying we haven't had success in the last four years is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, and if any students are such bandwagon/frontrunners that they think our teams over that span haven't been worth supporting they should just stay home and PLEASE don't show up when we make a run in the tournament and act like you're a fan. Just transfer to Kentucky and rock your Lakers/Yankees/Patriots gear wherever you go.
Last night...Seton Hall is terrible, it's a Wednesday night, and the weather was bad. Get used to more of this guys, because the conference season in the new league is going to have a lot of uninspiring games against teams like SHU, Providence, and Depaul.

I don't buy the "inconsistent results" argument at all. I was an undergrad during the Esherick years, for crying out loud, and we had much larger turnouts. I'm afraid this reflects an unfortunate trend in the type of student a Georgetown - one who would rather spend a Wednesday night at Lau than drunk at a basketball game...

nychoya3, I understand your point, but I wouldn't be so harsh on the students. The fact is, Georgetown's core key fans are not terribly voluminous (and many of us don't even live in the Washington DC area), so it's not surprising. I mean, look at professional sports. Except perhaps for football, which enjoys large crowds regardless of outcome (and because there are only 16 games), many professional sports teams flourish with attendance when they are good and then decrease when they are bad.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, the New York Yankees had terrible attendance. People blamed the Bronx location, crime, etc. Lo and behold, just a few years later the team improved, won a World Series, and boom, attendance shot up. The fact is people will come out to see winning teams, and they stay home for losing teams. Granted, we have had some very good teams (despite a lack of NCAA success), but we (and many other college and professional sports) rely on more casual fans to boost attendance. It's just the nature of sports.
And yes, I agree that the new conference is going to suffer from some poor attendance. Those Seton Hall - DePaul games are going to be nail-biters.

I'm with you NC, but unfortunately the students here now haven't had that huge excited moment that converts people from casual fans to someone like you or me. As someone who likes to watch every single game (even the ones against terrible competition), we appreciate the team and probably qualify the team as successful because they exceed expectations at the beginning of the season. Most 'fans' just care about the end of the year and the tournament... For instance, I have been trying hard as hell to get my girlfriend (current senior who didn't even buy season tickets) to go to the games and get into it. Her response "the team hasn't won anything in the past few years that I have been here, plays down to teams and struggles to score about 59-69 points. How is that fun to watch and support? I'll watch when the tournaments come on." It's really unfortunate (and break up material) but its how it works. We haven't done much in the BET or the NCAA since my junior year 2009...

Getting to the Verizon Center midweek is not that trivial of a task. It's probably an hour each way; quicker if you cab back, but getting there for a 7:00 PM tip means getting over the bridge or driving through town during rush hour. In this case, that's 3.5-4 hours to see a game that we really ought to win, so best case scenario it's a beat down against a terrible team. Worst case scenario you end up with somebody like Dominique Jones yelling about how unstoppable he is which reverberates throughout a mostly empty and silent Verizon Center and it really messes up your Wednesday.
