If the atmosphere is bad now, just wait until Catholic 7 season is upon us and Seton Hall is a marquee game.

It should also be pointed out that many schools who are thought of as having packed stadiums every game in reality do not. Duke may sell out every game, but that doesnt mean every seat has a person in it every game. Same with UNC. Hell, even when they were decent, UMD wouldnt fill up Comcast for every game. True WRT UNC & UMCP, but Cameron actually does fill just about every seat at every game. My wife went to Duke and we try to go to at least one game a year there. More often than not, because it jives with road trips to visit family in NC, we go to a winter-break game against an unsung low- to mid-major. It's always full and enthusiastic. The band for those games is made up of band alums, who know all the key songs. It's a fantastic atmosphere, but being a top-10 team for almost all of five decades while winning four NCs and a zillion ACC tournaments in an area that's rabid about college basketball and has little entertainment competition helps.

Cameron is 8,000 seats. They wouldn't come near to selling out a 20,000 seat stadium.
And there was an article just last year about how the student section -- which is tiny -- doesn't sell out except for big games anymore.

If the atmosphere is bad now, just wait until Catholic 7 season is upon us and Seton Hall is a marquee game. I really dont get this. And its not just Hoyapride, but journalists who have voiced this opinion on twitter. I dont get why in the new league, with Xavier, Creighton, Butler, Marquette, and Nova, Seton Hall becomes a "premier game". SHU, Depaul, Providence, SJU are bad (though SJU has fans), but you are at most playing them Twice a year. Thats Eight games. In the Current Big East we see Rutgers, SHU, Providence, SJU, DePaul, and USF at least once and usually one of those twice. So thats 7 games against bad teams. 7 vs 8 its not different. You have to have bad teams in a conference!! You have to. Or you have a bunch of good teams and then half of them become bad because someone has to lose! We should be happy about playing crappy teams. That 8 easy league wins!

Right, they sometimes single track when a train breaks down. That's not the norm. It happens more than it should, but it's still not the norm. I left as soon as the game ended and went straight to the Metro. Just made it home to Cleveland Park now. Don't tell me the Metro is an appealing, or even acceptable, mode of transportation. The whole system should be razed.

If we had our version of Cameron, which would be a glorified McDonough, then maybe you could complain about students' effort. But going an hour each way on a Tuesday night to watch us play a TERRIBLE Big East team that has almost no connection to most of the students? No thanks.

If you werent an alum would you have even thought of going to that seton hall game? if so why? and why are you lying about that? ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I went to a game at providence between the friars and the huskies on a week night on Thursday. Some people actually like college basketball. So yes some of us would go to a Georgetown vs. Seton Hall basketball game even if we weren't alums. Although I admit I may be in the minority.

In think the general stature of the university and not just the basketball program that we are playing is definitely a factor in the buzz generated by a game. Playing Creighton, e.g., even if they have a great player, unless its a truly dominant individual, isn't going to generate the same interest level of playing Mich, Indiana, UNC let alone a Duke.

I wasn't there but from TV it looked like the 400s were empty. Also, at tip the lower bowl looked half filled, but I don't think that is fixable...even if the game was played at midnight.
Anyway, I think this game showed that if you make the game an event, i.e. Grey/gray out, people will come. St. Johns is not exciting to the current undergrad or average fan. But if it is as stupid as G out, they will come.
Many people have talked about success in the post-season but that is only one part. It is not that simple. If the same effort that went into today was spent for every big east game, we could increase average attendance by a few thousand. Now the question is if the value is aligned with that. My guess is that Verizon makes more off of a few big sell outs than higher average attendance.

15,625 was a good turn out, students were there, but the cheap seats were less than full, that's a good crowd for ST Johns. The public support is what it is.

Earlier in this thread there were several people mentioning how it is important to better the in game experience for the casual fan. Yesterday I tried to pay attention to what goes on during TO's and I fully agree. I don't need to be entertained at this point because I am too into the game to worry about anything else. However, while forcing myself to pay attention I realized the life gets sucked out of Verizon during time outs. We shouldn't have to listen to the PA announcer drone on at length about what seems like every business in DC. You can't even understand him. After our game I watched FL play. They did not cut away for commercials at one point and the difference was glaring. FL was blasting music, the cheerleaders were on the court dancing, not doing the same old tired routine and the crowd was raucous. It would help draw more people and engage the crowd more if we could do this.

This is a little off topic, but I thought this promotion from the University of Miami is a good idea to increase non-student attendance/excitement: www.hurricanesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=28700&ATCLID=206211561Basically, you pay 75 for a lower bowl ticket, but as long as Miami keeps winning at home, you can keep using the same ticket without paying again.

Student sections half full tonight. Guess a top 25 matchup isn't exciting enough for these students. Unbelievable

From several television angles, the crowd tonight looked weak for a marquee matchup. Too bad.
