Having students on one end and Stonewalls on the other may be the answer. At least things won't look as embarrassing during free throws.

I just want to dump on the students again. Last night was terrible.

Another thought - any energy 118 tries to generate evaporates when 116 and 117 are filled with school groups, LivingSocial deals, etc. Just a weird mix when the Stonewalls are waving flags and chanting.

Yes, I think the Stonewalls are a force multiplier on the bandside, and a lot of their impact would be lost if isolated to the other side of the court.

Are there no groups still on campus to try to fire up students? I at least hope they'll all be there for 'Cuse on the 9th.

Ideally you'd have enough students and alums to fill both ends of the court and make a lot of noise. If that can't happen consistently, would you rather split up the alum and student groups so you have a presence on both sides or keep them together to have one big group? I'd prefer the former.

Was not expecting students to show up last night or any of the other non marquee games..nor should anyone. Sucks, but that's the reality unfortunately. .Seeing them not show up to Marquette like games is the most disturbing and what i've been mad about the most. As we've discussed ad nauseum something needs to change. Something must be done.
I honestly have no confidence that these kids will return to campus early from spring break on the 9th. I am actually quite nervous about this.

They used to make kids attending break games pick up tickets ahead of time so they could estimate attendance. They should really do this for Cuse. If you don't pick up a ticket by 3/2, open up leftover seats to donors.

Amid our collective bashing of the undergraduate student body (which I think is well-earned), I do think it is important to give a big thank you, slap on the back and milkshake kudos to the students who actually DID come to the game.
Not just for showing up (that is your job), but I thought the student section last night did a great job, especially considering their small numbers. Very energetic, loud and into the game, even when it became a blowout.
I want to buy you all a beer. Stonewalls, you too. You guys/gals are great.
Sadly, I am also trying to buy a house, so that beer will have to be figurative.
Fcuk Syracuse!!

as a current student who's been going to games since I was a baby, it's so frustrating that students on campus just don't seem to care about the team. I feel like every possible solution has been thrown out there, and it's inevitable that no students will come to the rutgers game, and the jury is out for cuse since its spring break, and most casual student fans won't make sure they're back for it. Having said that, I do think the athletic department could do alot more. The most they do is halfheartedly hand out a few flashcard sized reminders of games occasionally. Yesterday in Leo's they handed out reminders that we played depaul, but let's be honest-- that does nothing for most people. These students have no idea how much more convenient verizon is than the capital center in the old days. I just don't get it. I'm half expecting to see only one student section filled for cuse, which would be extremely embarrassing. Bring back the buses going straight to verizon if need be....reward students who go to all the games by reserving them seats in the front 3 rows...do anything. I just can't stand the apathy towards the only legitimate televised sports team we have. Lastly, I don't even want to hear the argument that we aren't exciting to watch because how many of the top 10 teams this year are really thaaaat exciting? Miami put up 45 against clemson and then somewhere in the 40's against UVA--and they're #2 in the country! And I don't want to hear that we don't have starpower etc. Chad Ford had Otto as high as #6 on his big board earlier this season. The problem has to be fixed. Hoya Blue is a joke. It has to be the athletic department. It may be partly due to playing in a pro arena, but 5 minutes into the game last night, there were no more than 60 students there. That is unacceptable. It can't get much worse than it already is.

There's something to be said for rewarding those who show up. Whether it be t-shirts, towels, head bands, better seats, etc.
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but since I was in school Spring Break was the same week as the BET. Why was that not the case this year? Even if students wanted to support the team at MSG, they'd have to miss a week of class. Now we'll be lucky to get half the band there. Am I missing something or is it just a lousy job by the administration supporting its most visible sports team?

And this year the NCAA tournament and the BET are a week later than usual.

student section has been a disappointment, but if they don't come for cuse kick them out! i'm kidding of course but that would be so embarrassing it is not even describable. i love the idea that phillyhoya had. my dad and i am lucky enough to have gotten a ticket already to the game, but some are not. if students don't think they can make the game and confrim it on 3/2 open up tickets to donors.

You know I have been a hoyas fan since the 80s and still am .i have never been to a game because I live 700 miles away from g town.i wish I had the chance to go watch the team play.i once had tickets to the hoyas vs Syracuse game in 2000 I was going to drive 700 miles to see it,I had bought my ticket and was really looking forward to finally seeing hoyas play live. But right the week before the game I was laid off my job,so I could not afford to come. Take a look at other schools like cuse,Michigan st,duke, fans love there team.why do the students here at Georgetown, not support this team,it is a top 25 program since jt 3 took over .i would love to be a student with the chance to support my school. Please think about the teams feelings and that they feel like it does not matter about bball team at g- town. When they are top 11 team in the country and fans is not packing the stadium. It is sad.i hope I get the chance to see team sometime in the ncaas? If they are close enough to drive from tn. Go hoyas..

It can't get much worse than it already is. Im guessing from your handle that you are a sophomore? Correct? Im asking just to get a sense your perspective and what other seasons you were a student for. We all have to remember that the last time this team exceeded expectations (and by that I mean primarily in the NCAAs, because that is what most fans respond to) was 06-07. That excitement carried over to 07-08 because they had a great shot at a national title. Since then its been a lot of blah. For us, on this board, it doesnt feel like that because we are following this team all year. The BET mean almost as much to us as the NCAAs. Finishing 5th in the league instead of 9th is considered a huge accomplishment. And it is, but not to a casual fan who goes to the games to hang out with friends, drink, and tell friends from other schools about how great "their" team is. This is true of every sport (except for maybe the NFL because of high ticket prices and other factors). Most people support teams when teams are front runners and there is always a lag time between success on the field and filling up the stands. In DC its happened to the Nats and the Caps (we like to think that when they made their playoff push for the first time all those games were sold out; they were sold out but a lot of those were to ticket resellers. It was very easy to get a ticket). People like front runners. Its ok. Its just hard to stay a front runner. Make the Sweet 16 this year and it wont be a problem. Next year they will be at least a top 15 team going into the year and there will be some buzz. The team needs to win in the post season! Thats it.

yeah im a sophomore, so ive been a student for 2 years, but im from the area so ive been to almost every home game since the days of braswell and before. thats about as far back as i can remember. yeah our teams may have underachieved in the postseason, but thats no excuse. you dont have work every single night. we're in the top 25 every year and cant get students to games. i cant even imagine what it'd be like if we weren't a perennial ncaa team under III

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Once again. Post season success should have absolutely NO I repeat NO bearing on whether students show up. (Ok perhaps no bearing is extreme. However not to the degree that everyone is making it out to be. We win. We're a good team) Everyone keeps saying they are "casual fans". Why do they care? This should be a social event for them. They should go because its the "thing to do". Why is it not anymore? We're a perennial top 25 team. The comments on here act like we're freaking our lady of the poor and haven't won a game in 40 years so we shouldn't expect students to come. If you guys who post on this board excuse it I guess the problem is even more dire than we thought.
People have brought up making it more like a party. I agree. For older students of drinking age, strike deals with bars have pregame events. Post game events. Etc. during the game more fun. It's beyond me that this needs to be the case to get people to come but if that's really it then by all means do it.
And before somebody inevitably responds without knowing what I've posted about this in the past, I don't expect miracles. I know attendance will be down for less marquee games. Having both sides mostly full is not a hard thing for bigger games. The fact that for Marquette there were half full is disturbing. That's a game you expect a good crowd. How can we think that these kids are coming to cuse during spring break? I'm at a loss. I don't get it

It's true that people like to be fans and go to games of teams that win. That doesn't mean things can't be done. People forget both student sections were almost full for many games before the Hoyas beat undefeated Duke in 2006. The recipe for getting student turn out is passion and hustle. It can make a real difference in attendance and atmosphere. We also know its repeatable because the Stonewalls are doing it right now, and as a season ticket holder I would say they have made an impact on game atmosphere. If you are a current student and want to change the status quo, go for it. I think you will be surprised at how successful a small passionate group of fans can be.

yeah im a sophomore, so ive been a student for 2 years, but im from the area so ive been to almost every home game since the days of braswell and before. The only reason i bring it up is because I was a freshman the final four year and I could see a distinct shift in the way students responded to the team over those four years. First two they were all about it and would go to just about any game because it was the cool thing to do. Then the next two years it seemed like a chore for many students to go to the games. It will be interesting to see how the atmosphere changes either after gtown crushes on saturday or after they make a run in the NCAAs. Because its not "the thing to do" anymore. Just like Gangman style isnt the fad anymore. Tastes change. You have to do something to keep people interested. And having the same season every year isnt keeping the casual fan interested. It happens in every sport, im not sure why you think this is different. Even the Redskins that dominate the sports landscape were close to losing that lead before RG3 came. The waiting list for tickets had dried up and most games were not filling up the stadium. Now, they are winning so people want to go! This is true at every school. Just that most major sports schools are much bigger than Gtown so the base demand for tickets is higher or the culture of the school is more geared around sports than it is at Gtown. The other aspect is that at smaller schools that don't have this problem, usually the expectations are lower (Creighton a great example). Winning there league is a great season for them; this is not the case at Gtown where we operate on a national level and so only national success is enough.
