This is not just a win, but a statement! This is huge for there tournament chances. If they can hold on and beat the teams there suppose to beat they will be dancing!

Kemba Walker is shooting about 41% from the field this year. In Big East play, the only time he's managed to make half his field goals is against DePaul.
WOO BE POY!! ;D

Two numbers that absolutely jump off the page:
1. Not sure about that last basket, but entering the last minute St. John's held a 27-0advantage on fast break points.
2. First loss by UConn to a team from the NYC region (SJ, SH, and Rutg) in 29 games.

I think Kemba's POY aspirations are fading as quickly as his team. Ben Hansborough is probably the guy to beat with Gibbs out. I think Freeman has a shot if he can have a few more big games, starting Sunday vs. Quette.

I have no clue why.

Kemba was getting the benefit of the doubt since they were still winning. That will change over the next week or so.

it would be scary to face them in the BET at the MSG I know the Johnnies are good and a tournament team, but there's a reason we beat them by 25 at the VC. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a hard fought game, but they actually scare me a lot less than UConn, despite the fact that they're arguably a better team than UConn. I think we're better than both of them, just that I think UConn has a higher ceiling just because Kemba can get hot.

DFW first loss in regular season games. Johnnies smoked them last year in the BET.

SJU is a lock after that game, and that's why I was rooting for them. I'd much rather see them in the tourney then teams like Marquette or West Virginia. Good story. I've always liked Steve Lavin.

Sat up close for the St John's-UConn game.
Afterwards I heard that UConn was leading the BE in FG Pct Defense. You wouldn't know it from this game. St. John's clearly had a game plan to run on them - they sent a flyer off of every rebound - and UConn didn't get back. The amount of 2 on 1, 3 on 1, 3 on 2 breaks was incredible.
St. John's looks so much better on offense than they did under Roberts. Under Roberts it almost looked like an accident when they scored. Under Lavin they move well, take great shots, and Lavin clearly has their attention and respect. St. John's was getting ridiculously open looks in the first half and missing alot of them - it reminded me of Georgetown on a good day in terms of the looks they were getting, not the fact they were missing them - UConn was just awful on defense. St. John's heated up in the second half but they ran the clock down 15-20 seconds on almost every possession in a very disciplined manner.
UConn rarely throws it to their bigs inside, and the St. John's press really bothered them. I assume UConn were just having an off night, and St. John's now has a habit of making good teams look bad at the Garden. I don't think St. John's shoots well enough to make a sustained run in the NCAAs, but they could be very dangerous.
UConn is going to be outstanding next year with all the young talent this year. But they looked awful last night, and having seen them play Lousville, Syracuse, and Seton Hall on TV, and now up close, they don't belong anywhere near the top 10. I would seem the Hoyas could really frustrate them with their offense as UConn doesn't seem very disciplined on defense.
Calhoun is certainly one of the last of the old breed. He yanks players after one bad play, berates officials with a look that makes you think he is going to stab the guy, and looks like he is going to have a heart attack at any given moment.

MSG is very unfriendly to visiting BE teams this year.

MSG is very unfriendly to visiting BE teams this year. Here's an indication of how the Lavin effect is taking hold: Attendance at the GU-SJU Big Monday game on 1/3: 8,897 Attendance last night: 13,652 UConn's a draw in the NYC area--curious fans and the Husky diaspora (must've been a rough night for that UConn student section in the corner at MSG)--but not THAT much. Much more rowdy and pro-SJU crowd than I've seen in...well, the last decade? I tell ya it wasn't that great when I was at MSG in January for our game. But it came across great on TV last night. It's the building, I think, that makes us root for them. If SJU played in their on campus gym only, or at the Izod Center, say, IDK if people would care quite as much that they were good. But The Mecca...oh yeah, you want to see that and be a part of it when there's good basketball there.

in January, we were the loudest fans in the place with several times when HOYA SAXA cheers were audible on TV. that is not going to happen again this year, who knows about the "real" transition that begins after this class graduates. good chances tho w Lavin, the tradition, location (No, not Queens, I mean home games at MSG), etc

Rick Jackson starts on the bench today?
Must be coming up with new complaints.
Also, he just charged into Mike Hopkins.

Kinda wish we got the noon game at USF next Saturday. There are about 50 people at that game.

I have such a hard time giving ND any credit for being an elite team, but they've looked awfully good of late. Are they for real? I'm just waiting for it all to come crashing down for mock turtleneck and ALL HEART Jr.
