Some good points from the UConn boards: "Thing is, our defense wasn't really all that good in the first half. Georgetown was just missing a lot. They were running a lot of high screens and EVERY time, our perimeter guy would run into the screen and just give up. Then Georgetown would miss a wide open shot. Now they aren't missing." This one's just funny: "UConnSouth wrote: honestly freeman is having the half of his life what can you do? " Guard him? "Hope I don't jinx the game by posting this, but a loss in this game could be an almost un-bounce-backable psyche blow."

We had some open shots, but in the last 10 minutes of the 1st half, Austin Freeman did not attempt any of them. He only took three shots in the first half and was not getting the ball and not demanding the ball. During the 22-2 run, I was watching him because we needed him to take the shot to break it, but on several possessions he was in one corner while the offense went to the other side, so he didn't get a shot and he also wasn't in position to get back quickly on defense. During one of UConn's free throws late in the half, Freeman had an animated conversation with JTIII, with arm-waving and pointing. I assumed that JTIII was getting on him about getting back on defense. I also assumed that Freeman was upset because the ball was not rotating around to him. That was why I posted at half time that Freeman seemed to be in a funk at the end of the half and needed to come back looking for his shots. Of course, I had not idea just how much he would do that.

Paraphrasing from the press conference, on what III told then at halftime:
Take slower shots. Don't shoot as quickly and we'll score more.
And on the defense: Our offense made our defense better.
Interesting.

Uconn was scoring int he first off of our missed shots. We stopped missing as much and took away their main scoring threat: transition.

Let's not act like it is completely out of left field that Freeman had a huge game today. If you watched Sunday's and Wednesday's game, you saw him steadily asserting himself as the Hoyas no. 1 scoring option. Somebody needs to put together his cumulative numbers for this week's 3 games. Some of us have been talking that's it time to stop focusing on Greg as offensive weapon no. 1 and today he proved it.
By the way, by far the coolest post in this thread is the Nevada Hoya post saying that HE WAS THERE when that guy set the one half scoring record. AWESOME.

Here's his stats in Big East play: 21.25 points on 31 of 53 shooting (58.4%). He's averaging 13.25 shot attempts per game. He's made 11 of 19 threes (57.8%) and 12 of 12 free throws. He's averaged 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1 steal per game and has only picked up 2 fouls total. So, not too shabby. ;D

As a public service, does anyone have a recording of Rich's call of the end of the game? Please share. I didn't hear it, but I assume there were double digit "HOYAS WIN"s? Sportscenter actually used Rich's call for the last 20 seconds. 10 "Hoyas win" was the count.

Back home in Boston after the game - well worth the trip. Tarkman wins the award though: he left Syracuse around 3 AM to drive down and is probably nearing home right about now.
We were impressed that the first half was dominated by UConn running their offense: that is, getting transition hoops off missed shots and turnovers. The post-game quotes from Coach indicate he saw that as well - stop rushing on offense and take good shots when they were there. UConn had to run half-court sets in the second half and they couldn't produce.
The comeback today rivals the one I witnessed in Manley Field House many years ago. Freeman put on close to the best, if not THE best, single game performance I've ever witnessed in 30+ years of following the team. What might be overlooked in the presence of his offensive output was the solid effort he put in on the defensive end, helping shut down Robinson in the second half and drawing a crucial charge on Dyson late in the game.
I'm as frustrated by Greg Monroe's seeming inability to finish strong at times and the ease with which his shot gets blocked, but he played with fire in the second half. I thought Wright played very well today too. Clark played a glue game - no points but solid defense and moved the ball well to the open man on offense. Thompson (3 assists and tough D) and Benimon (rebounds and general toughness) both made contributions. What can you say about Vaughn? What is becoming a typical lunchpail performance with several blocks and a great back tap offensive rebound that lead to a hoop.
Very important team win. I still worry about depth and getting a few more meaningful bench minutes, but it's working for now so I'm willing to be patient.
I thought the crowd was great (although it took the team waking up and playing with intensity to get the crowd really going). Classes don't start until Wednesday and dorms are not open yet (so my student made the round trip back home today).

KEEP FIGHTING! don't drop your heads and give up. overcoming 19 point deficits shouldn't be something the hoyas strive for.

Greg is 90 times better when he catches the ball in the elbow and turns/faces the basket because he can then use his body/dribbling to make space for his layup - allowing him to more easily goose it up to the basket. I can't remember the last time he turned the back to basket situation into a made layup. He also seems to get gummed up when defenders collapse in the low post because he does not get the space he needs to operate. Wonder if we can get some more high-low sets with Vaughn.

It's a credit to Austin and Julian that they were involved in the winning plays and winning this game because what you put into the offseason is what makes your season go well. They got in much better shape--which gives you confidence and reward is seen on the court.
Should be a lesson for guys like Henry Sims to follow.
Greg Monroe has got to bring an urgency to the court. He's Editeding away entire 20 minutes. His first Half was the worst half I've seen from him. You'd have thought he had 4 fouls the way he just moved out of the way for Uconn bigs, he didn't hustle, he stumbled around, he just didn't want to be involved. If he plans on going to NBA before he's a Sr--it's time to show the urgency and accountability of a Pro. You won't play in the NBA if you Edited away 20 minutes. Whether he wants to or not--he's the key to this team's inside game and that means getting some post ups--against bigger, stronger, more athletic people and taking on the challenge---which he did in 2nd Half--not the 1st.
Hollis Thompson's offensive rebound off Monroe's missed FT was a HUGE play.
My favorite plays were seeing Georgetown punish Uconn for not getting back and for Austin Freeman to pass to Greg for the layup instead of holding/waiting to get fouled. Everyone says "get fouled...." but if you keep scoring when they give you easy hoops--it forces what happened today--a terrible shot attempt by a terrible shooter and game over. Freeman has done this repeatedly this year and I LOVE IT. He looks for teammates and looks to score when teams are trying to foul. Best defense is offense with clock moving--not waiting to try and hit FT's and extend the game/let them set up a play.
Player of Year type of play at end of game from Austin-he's having career day and it's his ASSIST that ices the game.
