This was my first game to see the Hoyas this year. First half a disappointment (but never a disappointment really if you can see the Hoyas), but the second half was worth sitting through the first half. I made a statement, partly in jest, on the chatroom that at the half, the Hoyas had the Ucons right where they wanted them - overconfidant. This may have been proved true in the 2nd half.
Other observations on my first game: We have to finish our layups. JV=JB! Great effort by this pair; they are the two-headed monster! Jason was invisible for most of the game; hope he can break out of his slum in one of the games in the near future. I almost forgot about Henry, until somebody in the chatroom mentioned him. It would be nice to see him contributing.

i wanted to give some credit to hollis for a huge offenive rebound off a second monroe missed ft late in the game. Yeah, that was huge. What's more amazing is that he was the only guy on the lane for the free throw - we sent everybody else (including Vaughn) back to our end. Yet somehow Hollis pulls it away from 4 UConn guys. Freeman was amazing beyond amazing in that game, but some of the guys who didn't have the stats also played great games. Julian was solid on the boards and had the huge tip in at the end. Bennimon looked like the only guy who was playing hard in the first half. Clark didn't score all game, but he found other ways to contribute on defense and with smart plays. Also a shout-out to the fans today. That was probably the best atmosphere I've seen at the Phone Booth for a winter break game.

Does anynoe believe as I do that his team plays better when they are consistently pushing the ball up floor. I don't know if this was a directive of JT3 today in 2nd half ,.but definitely they played more aggressive offense and defense when the game was being played at a faster pace. The faster pace however dictates a longer bench than 2. I would have liked to have seen Sims get some PT today especially in 1st half when everyone else was stinking up the court. Dee could not have looked any worse than Clark did in the 1st half either. A longer bench would let these guys run without tiring before the game ended.

Agree that the faster pace seems to play into the skill set of many of the Hoyas. But, with a 1-2 man bench, this team cannot play that way for long. Also, the lack of a bench takes away the ability to apply full court pressure defense for a very long period of time.

Chvotkin's call during the last 30 seconds of the game was nuts, I thought he was having a heart attack -- hope it sticks to the highlights on ESPN. Just fantastic.

This is the NBA type offense that will be the norm from now on where have you been all year??

Back from the game. I had guaranteed a friend that we would win the game--he didn't believe me at half, but I stuck by my guarantee.
Obviously, I agree with what many have said: a great comeback, great individual performance by Austin.
Some disagreements: while I was happy with Benimon's solid minutes (fantastic offensive rebound and put-back!), I wasn't wild about how long we went in the first half with both Benimon and Hollis on the floor. To my eye, the starters seem like the best unit (although I hope we get to see more of Sims after seeing Hoya Prospectus's +/- figures), and I think we do OK with one bench player in at a time. With both Benimon and Hollis in, we have much less balance in our offense (since both defer to the other players on the floor for shots--rightfully given relative offensive efficiencies).
Also, the television coverage must have made Greg look pretty bad in the first half judging from all the negativity. I didn't see it in person. No one seemed too down on Greg after Temple. And with the way Austin was playing, did anyone want to see Greg taking more shots? He's a great Hoya and I want him on my team every year he'll give us.
Lastly, this is a team sport, and I really, really wish we'd stop defining the team as Austin's or Greg's or Chris's. It may be JTIII's team but it's not any one player's. I don't think the players are confused by this, but if anyone of them were to get hung up on this question, we'd be in for a much less promising season than what I think we're looking at now.

Forgot to mention: half the students didn't bother showing up before game time, and the cheers were badly coordinated all game. I'm starting to think our cheerleaders should actually, you know, lead cheers. Also, the guy who runs out on the court with the flag wasn't there. Surprisingly lax atmosphere for such a big game. The game itself was so compelling in the second half that it grabbed the crowd's attention, fortunately. That was all about the students just not being back yet. I cant complain about that. IMO, it was a great crowd. And, i'll be honest, i've been to games where there are tons of opponent fans, and there did not seem to be a huge UConn contingent. Trust me, we would have heard them during that huge run. When, exactly, do the students actually go to school? Do they get a whole month off this time of year? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Sheesh. You're absolutely right about the overwhelmingly pro-Hoya crowd, though. That doesn't happen very often at Verizon.

And with the way Austin was playing, did anyone want to see Greg taking more shots? Dick Vitale did. At one point Austin had either 28 or 30 points, and Vitale was still crying about the need to get the ball to Greg in the post and how he needs to be the one taking more shots. I think finally after he scored his 33rd point Vitale realized that Austin was a hot hand.

It doesn't show in the box score, but I thought Hollis and Clark did good work on D in the 2nd half. UCON wasn't getting easy shots as they had in the first. I also remember Clark passing up at least one open shot to feed the guy with the hot hand.

freeman did more than have the game of his life today, he saved the season. following the loss at mu, i'm convinced that this game was a nosedive game - lose today and the season was in jeopardy. freeman displayed his true potential and played with a poise befitting a hoya. congrats to austin and the team today.
