Let me first say that my comments are responses to other, previous posts. That being said, and in no particular order:

Poor poor Tiger. Wants to have unsafe sex with hookers, strippers and waitresses and then bring that potential disaster home to his wife. I'll root for him when i root for Nova and Cuse.
It's not a morality issue when it comes to serial sex outside of marriage. It's potentially life and death.
I totally agree. Don't get me wrong though, I am not taking some moral high road and casting stones. I am not going to cheat on my wife. She is the greatest in the world. And I am sure that most of us would say the same of our wives. That being said, I am not claiming to be anything remotely resembling "perfect." And I'm sure that limitless money would afford limitless pitfalls. That being said, not only would cheating on my wife be one I wouldn't consider, I honestly place it very near the bottom of the list.

I have wondered the same thing. I'm not sure that it would have the same effect that it would/did in other sports, but you do have to ask the question.

Kind of off the moment's topic, but where does Woods get off asking the media to respect a family he so readily and disgustingly disrespects?
When you show your wife and kids respect Eldrick, maybe others will as well.
Who's to say that he was actually talking specifically about his "recognized" family? My guess is that the pleas were equally aimed to avert any future issues. That obviously didn't work.

Seeing as how ESPNews keeps running it on a loop, opinions on Tiger's "apology". I found it half sincere, half BS. Kinds like how he's always been.

I am pulling for Tiger. He obviously made a huge mistake in his life, but he's human, with human frailties. It's a terrible thing to lose one's family. Believe me, I know.

Tiger struck me as profoundly and deeply sorry--that he had been caught and his fun and games were over.
His whole life gives new meaning to the ever -present yell, "It's in the hole..."

My opinion of Tiger did not change as a result of the press conference - I was always behind him. However, I think this is an important first step in his comeback. I really hope he comes back sometime this year. I think best case scenario is that he will miss the Masters but come back in time for a tune-up tournament or two before the U.S. Open in June. Worst case scenario, he misses the entire 2010 season.
And yeah I agree, the coverage of this has been a bit overblown, to say the least.

Why is this news? I like watching Tiger hit a little white ball any way he wants to hit it. What else he "hits" I couldn't care less about. Surprise! A professional athlete that's not a model citizen. News at 11. Follow it up with a Shawn Kemp story maybe.

He's back, baby! Just in time for the 2010 Masters on April 8-11. I would have liked to see him do a tune-up tournament or two before this, but it sounds like he feel he does not have enough time for that, and he does not want to miss a major. sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=4999991

Seems strange to me. I know this is his favorite tournament. The whole world knows this is his favorite tournament. Why would he want to make this his first one back?
1. Winning your first tournament back is a pretty tall order, even for someone as good as Tiger.
2. In addition, in his first time back to competitive golf, you have to believe there are going to be distractions, from fans, media, maybe even protesters. All of which will make #1 an even taller order.
I would think he would want at least one warmup. And no, practice does not count.
If he were any other golfer, I would give him exactly 0% chance of winning the Masters. Even with him being Tiger, I don't give him a very good chance.
Having said all of that, if he does win it? Then he really is superhuman.
Also, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is not going to make him the most popular person with his peers. For the circus reasons, not for the competitive reasons. I doubt few of them will say anything publicly about it, but I'd bet they're saying "thanks a pantload" privately.

Whatever tournament he came back for was going to be the biggest story of the year. Might as well have it be at a tournament that he knows and loves, at a tournament that has handled controversy before and done it reasonably well, and at a tournament that has the most respectful and genteel "patrons" of any sporting event this side of the Royal Enclosure at Ascot. He won't win, of course, but he can also hide out a little bit better at Augusta than he could at Bay Hill, for example.

Look at this way: if he loses, everyone knows it was because he wasn't ready yet, so no big deal; if he wins, he's superman. Either way, he comes back at his favorite major.
It's a win-win-win from his perspective.

Sorry, let me rephrase: From everything he has said in his professional career, Tiger Woods never enters the Masters with any intention except winning the whole thing. I have a hard time believing that Tiger Woods himself thinks that making this his first tournament back gives him the best opportunity to do that. Who knows, though? Maybe he does think that. C2C's point is a good one, but what if he comes back and, say, misses the cut? (Doubtful, granted). I don't think the speculation will stop just at "Well, he just wasn't ready yet." But whatever. He's made his decision. We'll see what happens. There are no Perkins or Dennys in Augusta, are there?

I think he probably thinks of it as a calculated decision. He knows that it will be somewhat of a circus atmosphere when he does return. So returing at the Masters might make sense. Sure, his chances of winning it are diminished -- and probably significantly so -- by not participating in a warmup event or two first. But the Masters is so strict that I think it will afford him the best chance to return to normalcy. Media credentials are issued with more care and concern. Cameras are very strictly prohibited in all but the practice round. Cell phones are strictly prohibited -- not just using them, but even having them on the property. And there is NO heckling at all. I know golf in general, isn't really conducive to heckling, but the strictness with which you can get passes really keep a tight grip on behavior. And regardless of how Tiger does, after he's been back for a tournament -- especially a major -- the circus atmosphere would have to die down a bit. So I think it makes a lot of sense.
I do anticipate a very interesting weekend at the TPC at sawgrass the next month however. The unofficial "fifth major" annually has the best field of any tournament because it has the largest prize pool. But the purists have always frowned on that event because they don't toe the line the way traditional golf is viewed -- at least in their minds. I think I might have to make that hour and a half drive.

My favorite bit of self-serving hypocrisy from Eldrick this week is saying that he "respects the Masters" and that is part of the reason why he is returning for the Masters. Hogwash. If Eldrick respected the Masters it would not be the first tent on his circus return. Eldrick respects his johnson and nothing else. Not his family, not his fellow PGA pros and now, most certainly, not the Masters.

I would be really excited that Tiger is coming back for the Masters if I could bring myself to root for him.
It's occurring to me that I won't ever watch golf again.

Ah, but for the halcyon days of Paine Stewart's knickers, John Daly's booze-fueled bombs, and Lefty's coming-up-short routine providing all the drama golf needed ...
