I'm happy that the guy who loves his wife and kids won. Just sayin'. Fans would like to think that. But one of the unspoken realities in golf is the number of groupies that are easy pickings for golfers. An enterprising tour pro could literally have girls lined up on each stop. I wonder how many golfers saw Tiger's situation and were whistling past the graveyard. I'll say this much: if 99.99% of the PGA Tour took off six months and were in the constant glare of TV and TMZ, they wouldn't have finished fourth at the Masters.

That was meant to be a joke, Jack. Why so serious? Phil also swears a lot less than Tiger though, so that's another reason to root for him. Damn foul language! Must be my impending trip to Syracuse, that hive of scum and villainy, to take a deposition tomorrow, followed by two more depositions in Albany Thurs and Fri. Nothing like mud season along the New York State Thruway.

Ahh. My condolences.
I guess it's more me though, since DFW thought I was being serious too.
I do like to root for Phil, but it has nothing to do with his family life. Probably the fact that he's a left hander more than anything.
Also, he's white.
KA-BLAMMO!!!!!!!!!!!!

And i still think Phil's shot on 15 was one of the greatest yet dumbest shots i have ever seen. Zero reason for him to attempt that shot. His caddie said that they saw KJ Choi get a 6 and Westwood had already layed up. Why even take that risk? He can lay up and still be a big favorite to win the tournament. A shot in the water hurts him sooo much more than a great shot helps him. But he did hit a great shot and i guess that's why he's Phil Mickelson and not Jean Van de Velde.

I think you meant 13, not 15, but yeah. Maybe he shouldn't have hit it, but that shot was pure onions and Phil plays that way because, well, he's Phil.

That shot looked more amazing than it was. It was a 6 iron off a clean lie with nothing in his way. A guy of his caliber playing the way he was can pull that off with his eyes closed. The TV angle make it look as if the trees were more of a factor than they were. He claimed that they were not an issue at all so it was simply a matter of hitting it cleanly. The recovery shot he hit on #10 and the pars he made from the trees on #9 and #11 were where the real magic happened.

A shot in the water hurts him sooo much more than a great shot helps him. But he did hit a great shot and i guess that's why he's Phil Mickelson and not Jean Van de Velde. Also, I think that's one of the reasons why he's such a fan favorite - he plays aggressively. Sometimes it blows up in his face, like it did at the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot - one shot lead going into 18, hits wayward driver off the tee, tries miraculous recovery shot that hits a tree, double bogeys to finish one shot out of a playoff. However, when he doesn't implode, it's fun to watch. I like Phil too, and I will root for him when he's not facing off directly with Tiger. If Tiger couldn't, then I'm glad to see Phil win it - his third green jacket and fourth major overall. Especially after all he's been through in this past year, with his wife and mother both diagnosed with breast cancer. He played great, and it was a magical weekend for him. I'd love to see him win a U.S. Open at some point - he's come close so many times, and he's turning 40 soon, so his time is slowly ticking away. Can't be too disappointed with Tiger's performance - he put himself in a position to win, but just couldn't do it. The start and the three putt on 14 was brutal. He still shot 69 though, and it just seemed no one was catching Phil today. Finally, on a semi-serious note, the wives of both Phil and Tiger are both incredibly attractive blondes, and yet Phil, for all we know, has stood by her, while Tiger fooled around. I guess there's some honor in that for Phil. However, I think it's a little over dramatic to call this a victory for all women, as Rick Reilly claims in his article linked below. sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=5077009

When you live or have friends in a town, you tend to hear rumors about local players that never make national or even official local outlets.
I've heard my fair share of stories about Padres and Chargers and (up here) Raiders and A's. It's not complete information, and not all necessarily true, but I think most of it is probably right. You tend to learn things you really don't want to hear sometimes.
Phil's one of those guys you never hear anything bad about. He's never seen at a bar taking a body shot off a girl and no one says "he likes to party".
That doesn't mean he doesn't cheat or whatever, but I think it lessens the chance.

Fans would like to think that. But one of the unspoken realities in golf is the number of groupies that are easy pickings for golfers. An enterprising tour pro could literally have girls lined up on each stop. I wonder how many golfers saw Tiger's situation and were whistling past the graveyard. Back in the day I worked at CBS, the network that has broadcast the masters forever. An attractive young colleague of mine attended the Masters in a professional capacity and was hit on quite blatantly and directly by one of the leading golfers of the day, a man who was indeed married. Similar thing (different woman) happened at the Superbowl with the very well-known starting QB from one of the teams. I'll say this much: if 99.99% of the PGA Tour took off six months and were in the constant glare of TV and TMZ, they wouldn't have finished fourth at the Masters. Agree with you here DFW. In his final two rounds, Tiger incredibly had a total of 11 Birdies and 2 Eagles! How many golfers on the tour can even do that? Unfortunately for Tiger, he also had 10 Bogies -- very un-Tiger like. Was it the glare of TV, TMZ? Was it the 5 month lay-off? The self-righteous, public scolding from the president of Augusta National? The non-stop gossip mongering by all of the media? His world has been turned upside down. As for Mickelson? Personally, I've always liked Phil and good for him to win his 3rd Masters and 4th Major! That 6 Iron between the trees to the front of the green? In his post game interview he said it looked a lot tougher on camera than it really was. His win makes for better competition -- and TV ratings -- down the road. He is also a great golfer. But Tiger is probably the best golfer of all time. He'll be back.

He is also well known for massive wagering in Vegas and on the course, and a considerable ego leading to his alleged nickname on tour FIGJAM (F I'm Good, Just Ask Me). He is reputed to be a huge tipper (whereas Tiger is cheap), which is a nice quality in general, but also tends to buy a decent amount of loyalty and confidentiality from those who might be in a position to spread gossip. I would say the reputational evidence is not conclusive, though I am fine with believing he is a rich dude who enjoys his position in life but loves his family and leaves his risk-taking for the golf course, the ski slopes, and the sports book.

Here's some good news for Golf fans: Watson gets U.S. Open ExemptionExcerpt Tom Watson, who won the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and contended for much of last week's Masters, will play in this year's U.S. Open thanks to a special exemption from the United States Golf Association.
Watson has played in the previous four U.S. Opens held at Pebble Beach -- in 1972, '82, '82 and 2000. He hasn't played in the U.S. Open since 2003, when he led after 18 holes before finishing tied for 28th.

Yeah, the only really bad thing I've heard about Mickelson is that he has a healthy gambling habit. However, if I made as much money has he did, I guess tens thousands of dollars wagered on the golf course for a little thrill isn't that big of a deal. If it were me, I'd like to think that I'd give more money to charity, but maybe he does that already too.
He may have a big ego, but I've never really seen him show it, and even if he did, he has the success to back it up. However, he's smiling most of the time and seems to do a good job spending time connecting with fans, signing autographs, etc.

my pc keeps freezing, so I can't see that link right now, but they were talking about it on the radio just a couple of minutes ago. Apparently the divorce is going through and agreements have been met and if I heard correctly, her settlement is some $880 million. I think I could live quite nicely on "just" half of that.
