I would say there is a very good chance Otto stays all 4 years.

is bobby considering joining his cusin on the hilltop Pretty sure he'd be there in a heartbeat. He and Otto are very close and I think it would be special for both of them to get to play together. It really depends on what JTIII needs and whether Bobby can fill that need. Bobby's an extremely quick pass-first point guard with a very good handle. He also has good defensive instincts and active hands. The biggest problem is his size (5'11 160) and (last time I saw him) inconsistant outside shot. I haven't got a chance to see if he has progressed since high school, but at that time he had several Mid-Major schools recruiting him.

The Hoyas are going to need to come out with more effort and focus than they did last night.... can't afford to be playing from behind against a good defensive team like Bama on the road.

Any more kids in the Porter pipeline want to come to DC? There are a couple of Porter cousins in high school that are good players, though not quite on the level of Georgetown. Bubba does have a brother, Jeffrey, in 8th grade who is going to be a really good one....though it is too early to say just how good.

Interesting bleacher report column from an alum of Otto's high school ("I've known Otto Porter Jr. since he was about 11 years old. I actually coached him for two years, and he lived at the end of my street. We rode to school together almost every day for two years.") and unabashed fan of his. Great history of his basketball lineage and a peek inside why this columnist feels he is contributing so early for the Hoyas: bleacherreport.com/articles/954798-georgetown-hoyas-otto-porter-was-born-to-be-a-star That's a great article by David (who is a high school coach here in Southeast MO) and pretty much sums up all you need to know about Bubba. With the competitive drive he shows on the floor and the humble way he carries himself off it, you can't help but root for the kid. For anyone who likes a good basketball read, I would suggest a book David hinted at in the article titled "Show Me Kings." It was written by a former sportswriter in the area and details the Scott County Central Program. www.amazon.com/Show-Me-Kings-Bootheel-Cookson-All-Star/dp/141960337X

Good to see them run the offense a little further away from the basket that last trip....creates more space.

I am probably the biggest Otto (Bubba) Porter fan and realize the team does play better when he is on the floor right now....BUT....I also realize that for this team to reach its potential, Lubick is going to have to play a key role at some point this season. Right now he just looks like he is struggling with a lack of confidence. To take away that starting role may do more harm to him (and the team) than good.

Need to play Porter at the high post when he comes in (Lubicks spot) to make Memphis come out and guard there. If they dont come out, knock it down....if they do come ou, then passing lanes open up.

We had one bucket on a cut to the basket. I was going to mention how we are really really poor at cutting right now for our offense but I'll cut slack because that does get better as you get a feel for your teammates. It's early. If we see a similar thing in January then we should be worried. We were poor on cutting to the basket because Kansas dedided to take that away from us and dare to beat them from the outside, which we couldn't do. We hit a few down the stretch in the first, but other than JC's second-chancer, I dont think we hit one outside shot in the second half. Exactly. It seemed like everytime someone was trying to make a cut their defender was bodying them the whole way through the lane. Also, their bigs were playing way off Lubick and Sims anytime they caught it at the high post... which narrowed the passing lanes even further. Even when a cutter was able to get some daylight, the pass still wasn't able to be made.

Doug Gottlieb just said Georgetown is a team that won't put pressure on Kansas...and will let them get into their offense and run their sets. He really doesn't know much about this team. "He really doesn't know much about this team college basketball." Fixed it for you Thanks

Why do you think it's been photoshopped? Because in the original picture, Henry was actually there instead of the shark.

have Henry take him away from the cup and drive past him. Think the big fella has that in his skill set? I'm not saying he can't do it once, or maybe twice, a game, but he's not Greg Monroe. It would be easier to drive past him off the dribble with a guard (or wing) in a pick and roll situation, since you will be forcing Withey to step over to try and hedge the ballhandler.

Am I the only one who keeps reading Whitey instead of Withey? Haha...definitely not.

While it is a very small sample size, I think it really represents what to expect from Withey. I've watched him a few times last year (obviously in limited minutes), but even then he didn't show much more than what he has done in these two games. Note that all of his buckets have come from within the paint.
v. Towson (5-8).....4 dunks/layups, 2 from offensive rebounds, 2 from the fast break
v. Kentucky (3-4)......all were dunks/layups that came from offensive rebounds
Totals: (8-12).......7 dunks/layups, 1 jumper......5 from offensive rebounds, 2 from the break, 1 from within the normal offensive set
I think the big thing to take away from this is that the best way to guard Withey in the half court is to keep him off the offensive boards. When he gets the ball at the top of the High-Low offense, all he will do is look to dump it into Robinson or reverse the ball to a guard. If he gets it in the low post, I think because of his limited offensive skills you can guard him 1-on-1 and force him to make a move.
The thing you have to worry about with Withey, like other have pointed out, is his shot blocking ability. While there is no way to completely prevent him from disrupting or blocking some shots, I think you can negate a lot of what he can do by getting him away from the bucket, force him to move around defensively, and make him keep track of cutters moving around him.

1 annoying thing is ESPNU is playing a Texas University commercial every other commercial break even though they don't play today. I assume it's because of how invested ESPN is in Texas now with the longhorn network. Seems really unfair though to advertise for them so much. And some people wonder why schools like Mizzou wanted out of the Big 12. Imagine trying to directly recruit against a school that ESPN has invested $300 million in.

One factor that seemed to negate Withey on the defensive end last night in the second half was that KY really started using Davis for pick and rolls out on the perimeter. Most blocks for big guys don't come against the man they are guarding, but are from being near the goal where they are able to read penetration and step over to block or challenge a shot. By using Davis in the pick and roll did 3 things with Withey....it pulled him away from the bucket, forced him to expend a lot more energy on the defensive end by having to hedge out and recover, and kept him from being a help side defender. While I don't know how much JTII will want to focus on isolated pick and roll situations, I think he get some of the same effect with the 1 in 4 out offense by at least starting the offense with a pick and pop at the high wing (with the ball handler going to the middle of the floor) to get Withey away from the bucket for a cutter from opposite the side going backdoor.
I said it in a previous post, but I really think defensively you can almost double Robinson in the low post even when he doesn't have the ball by sagging way off Withey. I remember one play early in the game last night where he caught the ball at the top of the key and Davis was above the free throw line guarding him with Robinson posting up Jones. Even with Davis's length, Withey was still able to throw over the top of him into Robinson for a dunk. Had Davis backed off a step or two to below the free throw line he would have made that pass impossible to make. You are not going to have to worry about Withey shooting or driving, so why guard him that far out? All his buckets the last two games have came on dunks or layups.
