If any high net worth individual, and especially one(s) as tuned into the program as former players are willing to pull donations as a result of dismissing Ewing as head coach based on his results, well, then I don't know what to say. This is not a controversial dismissal based on his results. Period. And the most ridiculous part about it all is that these former players haven't been welcomed back to the program once they left. That was a big topic of discussion with DawgTalk I believe. So for it to be said they're worried what the backlash would be for firing him? Stop. They want the program to succeed as much if not more than the few of us left posting on this echo chamber into the void. I understand that Ewing both deserves and has earned (due to his time as a player) as dignified of a way to do this as can possibly be, but this is absolutely NOT a tricky thing to navigate. It's just not. He's gotten way more leash than any other program (both NBA or NCAA, hell or even youth CYO) would give here. My only thought is that Jack has underestimated Ewing's stubbornness to step down himself.

Here goes the broken record again but Smart & Miller knew what they were going to get @ Marquette & Xavier which was competency, stability and a desire to be great. Unfortunately the same can't be said about Gtowns administration for a very long time now. Until that's fixed it won't be an attractive or desireable job to any top coaching candidates just like it wasn't after JT3 was fired... As I understand it, after JTIII was fired, we took swings at longshots in Shaka, Mack and Brey (none of whom are Thompson guys as far as I know), before settling on Ewing. Shaka had only been at UT for a couple years and was not ready to move on. Mack was unlikely to move directly from one BE school to another. Brey was coming off the best stretch of his coaching career and wasn't looking to go anywhere. These guys may have in part turned GU down due to a lack of "competency", but likely they just turned it down because they were still comfortable where they were. Obviously, in retrospect, there should have been several more calls to more realistic candidates before settling on Ewing, but admin apparently was sold by the glowing recommendation from Stan van Gundy, and here we are... Fast forward a few years, and Shaka was basically driven out at UT when a job in his hometown opened up. Miller got canned at Zona, and when his former employer came crawling back it was another case of right place right time. If Marquette and X had gone after big names from major conferences at their peak moments, its likely they would have been turned down too. A perception of a lack of "competency" or "desire to be great" notwithstanding, there are plenty of coaches who would be jump at the Hoyas job in 2023. Nate Oats, Eric Musselman, Kelvin Sampson, Tommy Lloyd, etc.--are not among them. But similar to how timing worked out for X and Marquette to bring in proven winners in Shaka and Miller, the timing is there for GU to land up with solid hires like Pitino or Mack (who is in a very different place employment wise than he was in 2017) or I'm sure there are others in this vein, so long as admin is willing to make a serious offer. If admin takes a big swing (and miss) at Bill Self and then settles on John Thompson IV, then maybe the conspiracy theorists are on to something. Guess we'll see. Sadly my understanding is that your understanding is not correct re: those coaches in 2017. Shaka strongly considered. Brey Mack etc not offered. Brey would have walked here from South Bend if offered. Let's not sugar coat the fact the "search" was a sham

Nate Oats is my pie in the sky dream. Ewing makes more than him - roughly by $700K - his buyout is sizable but not unreasonably large ($9 million I think) Just would be a matter (like many others) of how he views this job and if the upside of it is worth leaving for. Likely not for where he has Alabama currently and being in the SEC (although guessing he'd trade Tuscaloosa living for DC). Ah yeah good call, I forgot about Oates. That would certainly be interesting

Yeah so what's the list of established guys we'd have on a wish list? *Note I am not saying likely that we could actually lure them away, but a fun thought exercise nonetheless of the best coach's in the NCAA.
For example:
Mark Few? Tommy Lloyd? Scott Drew? Kelvin Sampson?
Who else would be on that pie in the sky list?
The worst part is Pitino is literally perfect for what we need...attainable and a hall of famer. I'm so beaten down by Gtown it's too much of a layup to actually happen

Kimani is certainly by all accounts a good up and coming coach. The issue is we can't afford to take anything other than a sure thing. Period.

Lee Reed should not be blamed for the train wreck that is out Basketball program. One need only look at the soccer programs, the lacrosse program and other “non Marquee” programs to know that the outlier here is the one program over which he has no say. This separate “nation state “ inside the TAC is the fault of one man and one man only at this stage: Jack. He needs to fix this ASAP. Did Reed higher either of the soccer coaches? I mean he gets credit for not messing it up but I don't think he hired either. He didn't hire either of them Muir hired Wiese. Nolan has been there much longer than that

Or he’s 59 years old, and doesn’t want to look for another job. Keep in mind that Reed arrived at GU in 2010 at the tender age of 47. Lee Reed should not be blamed for the train wreck that is out Basketball program. This separate “nation state “ inside the TAC is the fault of one man and one man only at this stage: Jack. He needs to fix this ASAP. Both the M and W soccer coaches were hired before Reed got here to set the record straight on that. I don't have much of an idea of how he actually does in his role as AD in general, but I do know his hands are tied when it comes to Bball. Is there really no check and balance when it comes to Jack within the university? Can he really not be overruled or compelled to do anything?

Love that he has a pull-up game. Athletically he's got all the tools, his jumpshot looks way more consistent form-wise than Peak. Give me a kid with that kind of athleticism, and seemingly no-nonsense work ethic/attitude all damn day. Can't wait to see what he can do on the hilltop.
Pair him with Aminu and Beard (and hell I think Harris is going to be a great piece too). I'll be verrrry excited for that squad.

Not really....it would be "OUCH" if he said that about Vandy or GT. At least UF has some recent tradition.... We haven't been playing like it, but still always hurts not to be considered a top program anymore. It's an ouch for sure

I'm with you on that, however (at risk of derailing this thread completely), I think that's the biggest frustration that I have: we really don't know whether or not this staff has the ability to succeed long term. There's too many extenuating circumstances. First year, the cupboard was bare. Year 2 glimmer of hope, Year 3 complete melt down. I can't say who's to blame or not, but specifically Akinjo was not happy with just feeding the post and rebelled that much was clear. Then, all the rest of the defections, the injuries, and now the pandemic we truly have no idea. However, this much seems clear, it's a results based business, and like it or not, we're not any better than we were at the end of the last tenure which ended up with making a change. We've become a bottom feeder BE team when we were supposed to be the flagship. All the nostalgia won't save us now. Changes need to happen. Realistically, Ewing is our best way forward, but he needs to have taken a really hard look at what a successful college program looks like, and it's not keeping around under performing support staff. He cannot do it alone and he seemingly has been trying to. I have no doubt he wants to win at all costs, but that should mean being honest with himself and seeing he needs help with getting to where he needs to be. Time is not on our side, the longer we go without success, the harder it is to get recruits. Akinjo was a bad egg that much was clear even freshmen year when he disrespect coach. I definitely agree with you there. That much was very clear. Don't let that comment take away from the rest of what I'm saying though. Didn't mean that was on the staff, just an example of all the extenuating circumstances that don't let us really see what the hell we actually have and whether to be optimistic or not

It wasn’t the staffs fault what went down with the 4 guys who left the team plus the injuries to Mac and Yurt. We are in rebuild mode and staff is being selective. Clearly you don't know the poster and clearly the sarcasm went way over your head... I wasn't necessarily responding to the poster, just venting my general frustration at the state of the program as a whole. Carry on

I'm not sure Kirby ends up getting the job, so it may be moot. But even if he did, if we were a "regular" program, it would not be a huge deal. It's usually a positive thing when one of your assistants gets a head gig. Plus Kirby is in his late 50s, and really his specialty is recruiting the south. I think it's nice to have a pipeline down there, but the reality is that the best players in that area of the country are generally going to opt for the SEC. We're more likely to get second or third tier prospects from the region, like the guys we got this year from Tennessee and Missouri who did not have any other high major offers. He's our top recruiter (unfortunately not a super high bar these days) and has helped us land some very good players through the years, but objectively what he's providing should not be irreplaceable. In all honesty it might be a good opportunity to hire someone who is younger, energetic, and has some different connections--maybe even, *gasp*, a social media presence. The problem of course is that we're all afraid that we are not a "regular program" and that if we have to replace Kirby we will hire another loyalist--probably someone in their 50s or 60s like most of the other powerful people in this program in recent history, who views Georgetown Basketball through the lens of the mid 80s. The fact that we haven't had any staff shakeups after this year is, to me, not a good sign. Maybe it's still to come, maybe the pandemic interrupted the process, who knows. But I feel like any other school that had expectations of being a contender and nationally relevant, in basketball or in football, would have made some move after the last few seasons that we've had. In football we'd be at the point where the offensive or defensive coordinator gets sacrificed. I won't disparage the kids we have coming in, who may turn out to be good, but it's very difficult to argue that our recruiting has been on the level that it needs to be, and our on-court performance certainly hasn't been at the level that we'd want. It really feels like some move needs to be made, and it'll be disappointing if we go into next season with the exact same cast of characters. This^

Hopefully we come with a different defensive game plan or we'll be PNR'ed to death again.
