I feel so bad for the guy. He's been a great Hoya - sad to see it end this way and hope he has hit his books during his time on the Hilltop. I also hope people show up on Saturday and show him the appreciation he deserves, despite tonight's tough loss (and all of the others this year). Too bad tonight had to happen in his hometown.
Also have to add, from what I hear Sapp was initially benched for voicing displeasure at being taken out of a game. After what has transpired this season, I can't be mad at the kid for that. In my opinion, JTIII has really had a tough time with substitutions, setting a solid rotation. Guys need to feel loose out on the court and know they aren't going to get pulled for every mistake; esp. for guys like Nikita and Wattad who everyone knows are not Big East level talent.
I love III, and I think he'll figure it out. That said, this loss, and this season, is on him. We've got way too much talent for this. Just see what Gary has gotten out of far less talent up the street. Sad.

I've already let my Terp friends know I'm looking forward to the Greg Monroe v. Dave "YMCA" Neal matchup.

As a Hoya grad from Maryland who has always been a Hoya supporter, this game is huge.
A big part of our recent rise has been our local dominance in recruiting. Let's face the facts, JTIII has 3 McDonald's All-Americans, couple B-More players of the year, couple DC players of the year, etc., etc. at his disposal.
Gary has a couple of honorable All-Met's he gets to overachieve. If Gary is able to pull this out tomorrow, I'll be one of those guys willing to question JTIII coaching tactics.
As someone who played high school ball in the area too, I worry it could effect our recruiting. The boys better come out and represent tomorrow.

Interesting comment by Fran Fraschilla: "The Terps have suffered in recruiting because other schools in the area have been willing to operate in the "grey area" and Gary never would."
Wow.

Chris Wright is a solid player. But he is not the second best point guard in the Big East. He is, however, the second best point guard on the Georgetown team to Jessie Sapp.

Just saw this blurb on Dajuan from the Lebron Camp (via Seth Davis at cnnsi.com:
Here's what one NBA scout said about DaJuan Summers, Georgetown's 6-8 junior forward, after watching Summers work out with the rest of the collegians: "You keep waiting for him to take the next step in his development, but it hasn't happened. I just don't see that there's a lot of passion there."
Really hope Dajuan steps up and is a leader for us this year. We are going to need intensity from him. Anyone know if he will be playing in Kenner this weekend?

I think that is fair. That said, think about guys like Sean Williams, Brandan Wright, the last three African big men the Sonics have selected, etc. These guys were not drafted into the league because of their high basketball IQs and ability to take people off the dribble.
A lot of guys are drafted based on upside that is showcased in fast paced systems, even if they aren't really developed prospects. I think Vern has a ways to go skill-wise to stick in the League, but I think the athleticism is there to intrigue scouts. Only time will tell I guess.

Honest question for the Dashonte Riley advocates: If you are someone in his inner circle who wants him to maximize his raw athleticism on the floor, do you really suggest that he become a Hoya?
In my opinion, absolutely not. After witnessing the Vernon Macklin experiment (debacle), there is no way that an informed big brother/AAU coach is sending his raw, incredibly athletic big man to Georgetown where he sits down on the block in the half court most possessions watching the ball get passed around the perimeter (and every once in awhile hits the high post just to pass it along again).
Yes, we might have been successful in converting Roy into a serviceable big man. But he was and still is slow, can't jump, and always had a feathery touch/relatively good ball skills. Half court sets are good for him. I'd suggest that a kid with that Dash's talent take it to a school that will highlight his raw ability, so he will be showcased for the League and he will be able to take care of his family. Which is why I think Vernon Macklin made the right decision for him and his family.
I'm going to add that, if I'm in the ear of an electric guard with great ball skills/ability to create off the bounce; I'm also probably not telling him to come here. Let's face it, this Princeton system was built for "heady" ballplayers (read slow white guys with above average passing ability, no handle and killer shots). This is not the Georgetown of AI, Zo, Ewing and Mutombo. Their greatness would be stifled here. This is not the "modified" Princeton offense that Eddie Jordan runs.
I want to add that I love the Hoyas. Love watching JTIII teams for the most part. But JTIII's system is built for certain types of players. It really is. Let's not bash Vern man. Kid just wants to take care of his family. Getting more minutes in this system wasn't going to do it for him. Anyone who has seen him in Kenner or with Boo knows that in the right system this kid will be able to feed his family for a long time...

From Draftexpress:
"The most significant development as far as the NBA draft is concerned, merely continuing what we had observed from the entire weekend as a whole, was clearly the “reemergence” of arguably the most talented big man in this high school class—Greg Monroe (13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 turnover, 6-10 FG, 23 minutes). Although this game’s setting was never going to be all that well suited for a player of his nature, Monroe found ways to show off just how gifted a player he is on numerous occasions. Facing the basket from the perimeter, he was lethal putting the ball on the floor and blowing past players with his terrific first step, almost exclusively with his left hand. He hit a beautiful jump-hook in the lane, and showcased his outstanding basketball IQ repeatedly by making a number of fantastic passes. He again got outhustled a bit in the paint and on the glass, but still had a very impressive showing taking into consideration everything we saw. Although many are frustrated by the lack of intensity he displays and the way he apathetic manner in which he runs up and down the court—and rightfully so--it’s impossible to ignore his incredible talent, and it’s clearly too early to write him off just yet."

Listening to Steve Lavin just refer to our offense as international-style (what?) got me to thinking...is Nikita in the plans for next year? Any news on him, did he officially redshire?
In Kenner last year, kid showed he could shoot and handle a little bit...

Jahidi would certainly do the trick. Being a product of the Esherick years, everytime I watch these games I think, man the numbers and accolades Sweetney would have collected under JTIII.
In response to the comment that we've generally been rebounding well. I agree. I also, however, think about what will happen when we play the other "top teams" in the country. Hansborough would eat us alive. As would Kevin Love. Dorsey again. And I don't even want to think about Kansas's boys. I think JTIII is a quality coach, and he can address those deficiencies these year so that we are still successful.
That said, it would be nice if in the coming years, when we face this problem, instead of putting in Jeremiah he can put in someone like Sweetney, Jahidi, or Don Reid.

I love this team and think they've still got a great chance in the dance. No meltdown here....yet.
Just wondered if anyone else is worried about this teams inability to box out the better bigs we've played.
Dorsey, Onuaku, Blair...these guys have killed us on the boards. It is easy to say, they kill everyone, but I really think this needs to get addressed in recruiting. With Samuels coming in at Louisville and Yancey Gates coming in at Cincy, it is about time we look to bring in some meat down low. Sims looks like he weighs about 150 lbs soaking wet, Braswell is no bigger than Macklin, and Monroe seems like more of a finesse guy too.
Can we recruit an enforcer already? Really wish we got that Dunigan kid...

As an '05 alum who lived through the infamous Esherick years, I'd like to say that my problem was always with the man signing his checks. The man who gave Esh a vote of confidence after even the most basic basketball fan could tell that he was in way over his head. I just hope that DeGoia realizes just how important basketball is to the Georgetown community and never makes the mistake of thinking that he can disregard the program again during his tenure.
I don't think Esherick got a raw deal and don't think he deserves an apology. I do find it interesting that so many of us blame everything on him though, he loved Georgetown and I am sure he was working hard to try to keep the program among the elite. He just wasn't good at it. The problem was that no one in the administration cared enough about the program to fire him before he became Public Enemy No. 1 on campus, and that is unfortunate because he really did dedicate a significant portion of his life to a school where he is now a pariah

The kid has an amazing skill set. He is also an above-average athlete (whereas Aminu is an out of this world athlete). Unfortunately, Monroe didn't hustle at all tonight. As long as he actually likes playing basketball, JTIII should be able to help him along. As a Wizards fan, this kid reminds me a lot of Kwame Brown. Mind you, this is not the first time I've watched Monroe play.
I just hope he pulls it together. For what its worth, he will probably drop pretty dramatically in the next set of rankings given his performances this high school season; so at least he won't have the whole #1 ranking thing hanging over his head as he enters college next year.

Might as well start scheduling NBA teams.
I had no idea he was even considering us. It is a huge deal that he is coming to Midnight Madness, this kid is the truth. He honestly might have the most star potential of all the recruits showing up.
If we get two out of three of Monroe, Stephenson and Johnson; while potentially still having Freeman, Macklin, Summers, Wright et al...not to mention all the other studs showing up tonight...
Good time to be a Georgetown fan.
