Sagarin is already unbiased. Another great site for rankings is rpiforecast.com which has the hoyas in the top 15.

I'll be the first to say it. If Georgetown wins out, they win the Patriot League and make the playoffs. Sounds like if we win out we win a national championship.

What's the point in having an endowment if you aren't going to use it? Today's the day to use as much as it takes to upgrade the football program so that we can join the ACC or whatever major conference we can convince to let us join.
It matters to the school for more than just athletics. If we can join the Ivy's, then great, and I take back that we should spend money upgrading football. However, if the Ivy's aren't an option, and I believe that they aren't, Georgetown needs to decide what the school's identity is. Currently we are an elite academic institution that also prides itself on being well-rounded. Our basketball team and the culture of rooting for the basketball team help foster that identity. I see more of my classmates at Basketball games than I do at any other events, and Georgetown basketball is something that we all share a love for. Also, it is great being able to meet up with friends at a bar on weekend mornings during DC's winter. Our identity as both an elite academic school and also as a basketball school is what sets us apart.
Should we lose our basketball identity, which we will if we are not in a big conference because we won't be able to generate the revenue to maintain it and also because we won't be able to recruit kids to play in a conference that isn't in the national spotlight, then Georgetown's identity suffers. For as many people who know of SFS, more know of Patrick and Iverson, some even know of SFS because they first heard of Georgetown because of Patrick or Iverson.
Yes, we may be able to maintain our academic tradition, but we won't be able to offer the atmosphere and networking of our current basketball program. We will be another Lehigh, Lafayette, or Pomona.
Some here may think that losing our athletic image will help our academic image, but I disagree with that as well. We will never be like Carnagie Mellon, Chicago, or NYU. Those schools gave up sports 50 years ago before they became commercial. If we fail to join a major conference, we'll be giving up big time sports because we couldn't keep up.
I know that we are all proud that our endowment is back above the billion dollar mark, and also that we are embarassed that it is still so far below our peer schools' endowments. However, now is the time to use some of that money to ensure that Georgetown is able to maintain its identity.
The current threat goes beyond just basketball.

All I can say is shocking....
That a team that shot 57 freethrows would only score 64 points.

The key difference is that the lacrosse team is drifting towards mediocrity, whereas the football team would be maimed and injured by a mediocre team.

This thread is getting so close to Latavious land. I really hope we land Porter.

I think a fairer interpretation would be that we expect more. We expect a program that has a shot at the final four. Each of the three teams that I mentioned were legitimate final four contenders. Yes, they came up short, but the past few teams have made the final four go from preseason hope to pipe dream.

Yeah, the McDonough one is gone. It wasn't structurally sound. It closed during my time at the hilltop. Now our athletes get to lift on a tennis court that is cordoned off.

Yes, it was ridiculous to also refer to the Reggie and the Miracles years, the Alonso and Dikembe years, the Victor Page and Allen Iverson years. Yes, Thompson's final few years were a disappointment (Am I allowed to say that?). It isn't about entitlement, it is about recognizing that programs go up or down and that getting worse begets getting worse. Three years ago things looked up for Georgetown basketball. Now they don't.

The school had also just changed basketball coaches and seemed to be making a recommitment to basketball success. So, while there had been famine years in the early 2000s, it looked like that time had come to an end. The school went to the final four and was getting commitments from McDonald All-Americans like Vernon Maclin and Greg Monroe. The program had a storied history going back to the early 1980s (the life span of anyone who applied to Georgetown after 2000) and looked like it was in the process of getting that back.
So... back to the Paris Hilton analogy. Sure the guy who promised Paris Hilton the $300,000 per month was someone like Donald Trump. Yes, he had gone bankrupt in the past, but it looked like that was behind him. If he suddenly becomes unable to provide the $300,000 per month, it is a disappointment and Paris can be upset. In 2007, Georgetown was the Donald Trump of college basketball. Sure there are richer people out there who have never gone bankrupt, but it would be reasonable to expect he could dole out $300,000 per month.

TC, your analogy only works to the extent that Paris Hilton was able to pick her father. If Paris did get to pick her father, and she picked the one who offered a $300,000 a month allowance, then she would have a right to be upset that it got cut by a third. Your analogy doesn't work.
Unlike Paris Hilton, students get to pick their schools. One factor that influences many students who pick Georgetown is success of the basketball program. Students and alumni can be upset if the program gets worse.

I see brasky's point, however, our practice facility is still a joke. Nothing has been done about it, and if nothing gets done about it, it will remain a scintillating topic each and every off-season until one gets built. For all sports, our facilities are a joke. I really don't get how Georgetown can continue to put out well rounded graduates with such a paltry focus on athletics.

Roy is a stiff. He will never be a big east level player. I hope he is a great student because he sure won't have a career in basketball.

I know they've had classroom issues, but imagine how good Allen Iverson and Victor Page will be when they are upperclassmen!

Amadou Kilkenny-Diaw's Facebook Status post our loss to VCU: "Every time I put on the blue and gray I always stepped on the court full of pride and respect for the program and the people who came before and played hard to keep the legacy intact. I feel that all of the guys I played with did the same. I don't know what's going on right now." Wasn't he on a team that went 4-12 in the BE? Let's not talk about preserving legacies. It is ridiculous that people are attacking Amadou about playing with pride. Many posters have made similar comments or at the least feel the same way as Amadou about the current players; only, they have posted so anonymously. The sole difference that is making some board members attack him is that Amadou was a basketball player who helped during our program's upswing (from not-to-the-NIT, under Eshrick, to the Final Four appearance), we all know who he is, unlike the rest of us who aren't sharing our names and who likely didn't play basketball. His senior year, the team beat Duke (putting Georgetown basketball back on the map) and went to the sweet sixteeen before losing to eventual champion Florida. Amadou's teams helped build our current legacy.

Thank you Chris and Hollis. The two of you show up every game and give your all. I'm proud to watch both of you play basketball.

Dear JTIII,
Switching doesn't work late in the season. Teams figure it out and draw fouls on our big men, create mismatches inside, and split the two defenders.
I hope this helps, and I really love our program and hope you coach at Georgetown for many years to come.
Sincerely,
H2oya05
