I believe that the true legacy of John Thompson is his effect on college basketball as a whole. I think that the success that Thompson had became the model for many universities. Of course that is a two-edge sword. The many gifted athletes that John Thompson was able to attract now have many more options. Options that are directly attributable to the success of John Thompson. When John Thompson visited a recruit's family at their house and had dinner with them, we had a real good chance of signing him. They knew that Coach Thompson was going to take care of their son. Back then if you wanted a black coach, who understood your son, John Thompson was the one. There is a lot more competition for that same recruit now and I don't believe that Georgetown has a leg up on the competition anymore.
If it were an option I would take it in a second. We would be middle of the pack for most sports including basketball. But I think some great rivalries would be resurrected.
