FYI - I posted this in another thread a few days ago, but Sunday's game will also be carried on the MSG Network, which I believe is standard for many of the cable / satellite carriers in the NY-metro area: www.msgnetwork.com/tv_schedule.jsp

Some complimentary things about Coach and the team's performance so far this season in the following article (I've excerpted the parts about the Hoyas, as there sometimes is registration required on this site): www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/10695045.htmPHILADELPHIA - (KRT) - Any coach who takes over a struggling program prays for a quick start. Not just to give his players confidence, but to send a message out to recruits and the whole basketball world. Georgetown is sending that message right now. Nobody really expected John Thompson III to come in and get the Hoyas kick-started the way he has this season. The program once directed by John Thompson Jr. had hit bottom, going 4-12 last season in the Big East. The Hoyas had just one conference road win, at Miami in overtime. Already, Thompson's team has won at Villanova and Pittsburgh and taken Syracuse to overtime in the Carrier Dome. The Hoyas, aided by a strong group of freshmen, are 11-5 and right now are solidly in the NCAA tournament picture. They could hit a wall anytime, but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe the only people not surprised are those who saw Thompson up-close during his time at Princeton, when he won two outright Ivy League titles and shared a third in four years. Thompson used the system he learned under Pete Carril, but wasn't chained to it. "The thing that was different under John, they didn't use the shot clock that much," said Penn assistant Gil Jackson. "Under Pete, it was all layups or threes. John recruited some athletes who brought a midrange dimension to Princeton. That was a little spin. They weren't quite as restricted to the system. They would look to make plays a little more." Because of his Hall of Fame father, Thompson is college basketball royalty. But he doesn't carry himself that way. He doesn't give off any kind of "I'm better than you" vibe. At Princeton, he would often pop up at women's lacrosse games or men's soccer games, just standing on the sideline, part of the athletics program. People at Princeton who saw Thompson all the time talk about how strong he was at managing a game, how he never fell into set substitution patterns, that he had a great feel for what was happening, while it was happening. He continues a pattern of former Carril players and assistants succeeding as head coaches. Right now, the network includes Thompson's Princeton predecessor, Bill Carmody, now at Northwestern; Chris Mooney at Air Force; and Joe Scott, who succeeded Thompson at Princeton.

I was able to deal with the idea better when there simply was "no TV" for this item. But now that there is a crew going there to broadcast the game in Syracuse, it really bothers me that no one else is picking this up. How can a station in DC not pick this up? ? DFW, do you have any light you can shed on this? You are generally very knowledgeable in the ways of local network feeds. I share the frustration, dTRAIN. While I don't live in DC, here in NYC many of us are subject to the virtual cable monopoly that Time Warner has on the city. Yet, while they provide us with something like 200-300 channels with a basic digital cable package, they couldn't somehow pick up this random local cable station that they own to allow NYers to watch this game. Granted, that's a lot more understandable than not having coverage in the DC market, but frustating nonetheless. In any case, while its of any limited consolation to NYC-metro area Hoya fans looking to see tomorrow night's game, the GU-Notre Dame game this Sunday (12pm) will be on the MSG Network.

Apparently the oddsmakers aren't buying the "Georgetown always plays Syracuse tough" argument. Orangemen are favored by 15 according to the odds on Yahoo (probably not the latest/most reliable source, but presumeably pretty close to the current odds offering): sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/odds

If we beat SU, then that means we are well on our way to an at-large birth. That would be extremely positive for the university and the program - but from a completely selfish perspective, I hope that a good season this year does not preclude a magical 2005-2006 season. Why? Because I am not on the hilltop this spring, I will be studying in Africa. I don't know how upset I would be if I missed the only tourny appearance of my career at Georgetown. While its understandable that you would be a little frustrated at not being able to see the Hoyas this season (if its of any consolation not many of us in the States have been able to either, given the lack of TV coverage thus far), you must view any success this year, whether it be modest or "magical", as a necessary foundation for success in the upcoming years. Much of the core of the team will likely be back: Bowman and Cook will be seniors and Green, Wallace and Hibbert will both have an important year of development under their belts as returning sophs. Add to that the facts that Owens could be back and JT3 and the coaching staff would have had a full year to teach the "system" tends to make me think that next year's team could be even more entertaining to follow. In addition a nice run this year (perhaps 7-9 or 8-8 in conference, even if no NCAA tourney bid) would hopefully set the table for at least one or two national games next season (something which we have none of so far, save the 2 ESPN Classic games). So I say go Hoyas this season and every one, and, Hoyanick, if the season were to be so magical as to result in a tourney appearance, I'm sure you could find someplace in Africa that picks up CBS!

Seton Hall isn't exactly "someone" this season, but a loss would definitely not help either. With this team, we should be more concerned about winning our games instead of cute RPI calculations. If we do our job, everything falls into place. If not, the RPI won't matter much anyway. Agreed. While its always nice to see a team that we've beaten go on to beat some quality competition, our primary concern should be with the games on our schedule and letting the numbers fall out where they may. Regardless of what happens to Pitt the rest of the season (perhaps aside from a 6-10-type conf record, which despite their early struggles, seems unlikely), a road win at Pitt should hold up as a quality win should we be so fortunate as to have the Hoyas in a position at the end of the seson where we (or a committee) would need to contemplate such things. Beat Nova!

I hate this. Anytime the opposing star(s) are out or foul out, the opposing team always plays better against us. And anyway, Allen Ray is good enough to win on his own. But if we win, I'll be happy. I don't even care that this has become a no-win/must-win game like Rutgers. I'm with you SFHoya - All one has to do is think back to the first round BET game against Nova in Sweetney's last year. What did they have, 6 or 7 total players, only a couple of which were scholarship players, and we just barely squeaked out a win.

I think we are due for a letdown against Rutgers. I tend to agree. I'm also concerned that the Rutgers team will be pretty focused on this game as a big one for them to avoid an 0-3 start given that it precedes a road game at UConn. Not that I need to caution any Hoya fans, but Rutgers is no team to look past (even when not in the RAC), particularly given the way that they gave Pitt all they could handle yesterday in a 3 point loss.

I can vouch that tomorrow's game won't be on cable TV in NYC area, unless you buy the ESPN Fullcourt package. Most sports bar would presumably have Fullcourt, so it looks like that's the only bet for at least NYC area.

Is there really no interest in meeting up in NYC to watch tonight's game? COME ON NYC HOYAS! LET'S GO HOYAS!!! BEAT PITT! I'll probably only be able to make it for the 2nd half, but I may end up going to watch the game at Ship of Fools on 2nd Ave and 82nd (is that right?), just in case anyone else was thinking of going. Hopefully I can get out a little sooner and make it for the last 10 minutes of the 1st half...

Does the Jack the Bulldog mascot picture come up with purplish-pink coloring on other people's screens? No wonder we can't get the gray "home" and blue "away" jerseys as they should be for the men's team.

Do they still do the student fan of the game? I keep checking the guhoyas.com site and they've still got the same goofy pictures from last year. I want 2004-05 goofy pictures!

You can click on the link to find the "odds" of each BE team to win the conference (nothing really of major interest here other than unbridled Orange self-love), but I thought the following 2 excerpts from the article would be of interest to Big East fans (not sure if folks have already seen this stuff at any of our games) : The Refs Go Wireless This season all of the basketball officials in the Big East, ACC and Southeastern Conference will be controlling time via a wireless mechanism. All will wear a device on their belts that looks like a pager, which is connected to a small microphone attached on their whistles, which will shut off the clock when the whistle is blown. Next application: by parents everywhere, especially at dinnertime. A Luminous Gift The Big East has purchased lighting tubes which wrap around the borders of the backboard and light up whenever the whistle is blown. It is an advanced version of the lighting system that is currently used in customizing cars. From low riders to backboards, who'd a thunk it? newtimes.rway.com/2004/122904/shakin.shtml

I’ve listened to the MEAC bashing since this summer…<br> But if the MEAC is a crappy conference, why did the Hoyas struggle with a team that probably won’t finish in the top 3 in the conference? For what its worth, while Norfolk St may not have been projected to finish in the top 3 in its conference, they have gotten out to a 2-1 start in conf play: kenpom.com/sked.php?&y=2005&team=Norfolk%20St.

Also, remember Clemson destroyed Norfolk by 27 and we destroyed Clemson by 15. This OT win is an aberration unless we believe that both our win over Clemson AND Clemson's win over Norfolk are aberrations. Agreed. It seems to me quite difficult to make much sense (either positively or negatively) of the Hoyas' 2004-05 season using any kind of simple, "transitive property"-type analysis, since the outcomes of the 10 games we've played thus far seem so incongruous. Nevertheless, while a solid 15-20 point "rebound" thumping of Howard won't really tell us that much more about the Hoyas, I'm still hoping we can have that kind of a game tomorrow so that the team has a bit more confidence in itself heading into Pitt & UConn.
