OK - Here's the deal:
ALL NYC area HOYA fans - wouldn't you love to get together every time the Hoyas were on TV and grab some drinks, finger food, and most importantly, gather together to support our team?
Let's get a roll call going, starting tomorrow, so that we can begin to establish a small but growing group of Hoya fans who wish to convene on a regular basis from January through March, in preparation of the grand finale at the BET at MSG. It was only a few years ago that I helped arrange one of the more successful unofficial Hoya gatherings during our run to the NIT Final Four, in spite of Georgetown doing everything in their power to make it difficult to get tickets, know game times, etc.
Well, I wish I was able to get this gig going sooner, but please try to respond some time today and also forward a link to this post to non Hoyatalk members if you think they're interested in joining us.
First of all, although I currently live downtown in Chelsea, for some reason, I feel as though the Upper East Side has generally been the area that was most popular amongst New Yorkers. This may have changed, as I am now several years removed from college, but let's have a vote as to where most of you would like to meet going forward.
Uptown - East or West?
Midtown - East or West?
Downtown - East or West?
Please indicate your preferences, and keep in mind, we want to find a place that will have tons of tv's, directv and/or digital cable, and that won't be likely to shun us in the event of another big-time sporting event.
For now, I will suggest that a couple of good gatherings have taken place at "The Back Page" (Upper East Side), "Ship of Fools" (Upper East Side) and Blondies (Upper East/West Side). Many places aren't bad, but I tend to like to find places that give us a chance to get our own big screen with volume.
Tonight, the Knicks are playing a big game against Miami, the Nets are also playing, and unfortunatley, Syracuse is taking on St. John's, which means that although there is tons of fun basketball action, it may be difficult to get our own screen. However, if we can get 7-10 people to commit to meeting up, I will call several places, and try to get a guarantee that we will have our own screen, with volume, and will in turn negotiate with the bar that we are looking at spending some $$$ on food/drinks, but more importantly, if we have a good experience, we are likely to return week in and week out.
Keep in mind that "The Back Page" was (and may still be) owned by a Georgetown alum, so I think this would be a decent suggestion. However, given their layout, I would prefer to get their private room reserved for future dates (with like 10-20 people), and might suggest that the "Ship of Fools" is a good place to start, as they have many screens, and have been accomodating to Hoya fans many times in the past.
Let me know your thoughts and suggestions, and please, let's try to get a few NYC Hoyas together. In case you are not able to make it tomorrow, please still chime in with suggestions and with your ideas, as we hope that you will join us some time in the near future. Also, I am willing to take full organizational responsibility for the group, but anyone who wishes to be my co-pilot, it would be greatly appreciated, as I plan to make several trips down to D.C., and would like the group to continue to meet and build momentum, even if I'm not around.
WHO WANTS TO JOIN ME ON AN INTRODUCTORY TRIP TO MEGAFANLAND?

I live downtown west, but I'll go uptown if there's a gathering. To tell you the truth, tonight will be close as to whether I can make it, but I'd definitely go for the UConn game.

I'll probably only be able to make it for the 2nd half, but I may end up going to watch the game at Ship of Fools on 2nd Ave and 82nd (is that right?), just in case anyone else was thinking of going. Hopefully I can get out a little sooner and make it for the last 10 minutes of the 1st half...

Given the shortage of time and the competing TV sports choices, if Megafan can just find a place in Manhattan that will (a) put the game onscreen (with sound or without) and (b) sell us beer, then at least the name of the place can be posted and interested NYC fans such as myself will know where to show up.
Then perhaps someone can work on building a relationship for future games at this locatyion or elsewhere.

I just got off the phone with the "Ship of Fools" bartender. They said they could arrange a separate seating area for the Hoyas-Pitt game, most likely with sound. They have a happy hour running until 7pm ($2 beers) and then have a 30 wings/bucket beer combo for like $30, so come one, come all... www.shipoffools.citysearch.com/content/00/01/34/28/23/userimages/52.jpg[/img] All you NYC HOYA fans, get your a$$ in gear, and head up to 82nd and 2nd, to join MEGAFAN and co. will the HOYAS to a victory over the #12/16 team in the country. Not going to make it tonight, but I have watched my share of games at the Ship and Back Page, and you can not go wrong at either place.
If you are interested in a Georgetown time warp, the Ship always has tons of Miller Lite on hand to make you feel like you are at a Hoya Block Party.
