It's quite clear that Reed needs to go along with Ewing. Agree. This is clown show, national embarrassment type behavior. I don’t know what we, as a program, care about, but it is clearly not winning basketball games. I read I Came as a Shadow recently - great book - and JT2 made clear that he played by the rules, emphasized academics, challenged the players, etc., but winning basketball games came first. He wasn’t bringing AI on campus unless the kid could ball. He wasn’t going to be given the opportunity to make a difference in kids lives unless he could win. The University’s prestige wouldn’t rise unless he could win. We just had the worst season ever in the BE (by definition) and have been bad and getting worse every season under Pat. There is objectively no reason to think the program will get better. What are they even doing? At this point I have lost all faith in the program. Even if they fired Ewing at some point, there is no reason to think they will bring in a good coach. I might be done with the Hoyas until further notice.

I have no remembrance of the last two "votes of confidence" and the language used, but "we are committed to Coach Ewing" strikes me as direct and forceful. I see no reason to release this now unless Reed is prepared to stand behind it. I parsed it the opposite way, but the fact that someone is willing to put their name behind this debacle even potentially as political cover is pathetic. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/at-georgetown-the-unthinkable--fire-thompson--is-getting-louder/2017/03/03/a734345a-0034-11e7-8f41-ea6ed597e4ca_story.html“We remain confident in Coach Thompson’s ability to lead a team comprised of student athletes who achieve academically, are prepared for a future beyond Georgetown and will be competitive on a national level,” Reed’s statement read. “Our history of success in men’s basketball at Georgetown has created high expectations that we continue to embrace. We appreciate the passion of our fans and their tremendous support.” And going back further: www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/2004/03/17/georgetown-fires-basketball-coach-esherick/97c0913c-f0a5-4c9c-91aa-e6e0dc85d16e/In an interview on Feb. 25, Lang endorsed Esherick, saying, "We do want to win, we will win, and we will win with Coach Esherick." Two days later, DeGioia issued a statement via e-mail that read, in part, "I have confidence that Craig Esherick -- who helped to build our tradition of excellence in men's basketball -- is the right person to strengthen and lead our program."

I think it's telling that Esherick and JT3 got a vote of confidence from President DeGioia and Ewing's comes on a typo ridden statement from Lee Reed. It’s not What is the basis for your information? Like you, I always expected the university to be difficult and desire to avoid firing Ewing. So, if that's the basis fine. If you have inside information, that's another thing. I have no doubt the university and DeGioia have no desire to fire Ewing. This is pretty obvious. But they didn't want to fire JT3 in 2017, either, and things came to a head after Waters decommitted. So, right now, is the university all-in on keeping Ewing? Probably. Will that be the case in a month? Too early to say. If the university wants attendance to continue falling, season ticket holders to leave in droves, and have another off season of lack of roster retention, then by all means, bring on another year of Ewing.

Quick question - does anyone actually see this on GUHOYAS.com? Is this just another disconnect that they released this statement to Rothstein, without actually posting on GUHOYAS.com?
Maybe I'm just missing it on the website, but just wanted to flag out.
It was not posted to GUHoyas.com or Georgetown.edu.--Admin

Appears to me to be a $ decision. Could not afford the buyout. Suspect Ewing's agent would not back down from the terms of the contract.
Also, anyone who thinks the statement originated with Reed just "don't know Georgetown".

Are you anything other than a Ewing fan? Do you care about the Georgetown program at all? Ewing the coach has an overall losing record in the Big East. He has not had a single winning season in conference play, and we are losing our best player at the end of this year. We are the lowest rated major conference team EVER in most statistical categories and will likely finish with ZERO conference wins this year. We have not even been in the conversation as a bubble team for an at large bid to the NCAA tournament, even when we did go 9-9 in conference because the preseason schedule was so lacking in quality wins because of the games he scheduled. Winning 4 games in 4 days to take home the BET title was a fun ride, but that was so clearly an aberration based on every other shred of evidence that says Ewing is who we thought he was as a head coach, recruiter, GM, whatever you want to call it. If the team isn’t talented enough, he has to bring in better players, if the talented players aren’t playing well, he’s failing in his job to coach them, if his best players keep transferring, he should create an atmosphere where kids don’t want to leave. Every single part of the job, he’s failed at. I don’t doubt his basketball knowledge, but he has not proven himself to be even a mediocre teacher of the game of basketball. What additional evidence is needed to see that he cannot successfully do this job? Seriously what would it take for you to say enough is enough? Lets go Hoyas! I will translate... He has no reasonable answer to any of the above...

From the front page: www.hoyasaxa.com/sports/bball.htmGeorgetown's last two public votes of confidence for a coach are not confidence builders. On March 3, 2017, a statement from Reed said the following: "We remain confident in Coach Thompson's ability to lead a team comprised of student athletes who achieve academically, are prepared for a future beyond Georgetown and will be competitive on a national level. Our history of success in men's basketball at Georgetown has created high expectations that we continue to embrace. We appreciate the passion of our fans and their tremendous support." Thompson was fired by Jack DeGioia 21 days later. On March 4, 2004, a statement from University president Jack DeGioia read as follows: "As someone who has a 29-year affiliation with Georgetown University and its athletic department, I take special pride in our tradition of athletic and academic excellence. I am very committed to continuing our tradition, especially in men's basketball, by fielding competitive teams, ensuring that our students get the very best educations, and setting a standard for integrity. I believe that this season's men's basketball team, and our new class of recruits, hold a great deal of promise. I have confidence that Craig Esherick - who helped to build our tradition of excellence in men's basketball - is the right person to strengthen and lead our program." Esherick was fired by DeGioia 12 days later.

I guess there's two possibilities here : - one, they really plan on keeping Ewing, their standards are that low or they dug themselves into a money hole because they are idiots, in which case, why am I here wasting calories - two, this is to keep Ewing and Ronnie on the reservation for a couple of weeks and to blame it on the public reaction when people go bananas about this. In that case, they are abject cowards and they're showing that they'll never, ever, ever be straight with us. When people show you who they are, believe them. Georgetown is showing who they are. Georgetown will do another sham search. They won't interview people. They'll throw some money at Korn Ferry and make a couple of calls and nothing will go any further and they already know who they want. In which case, why am I here wasting calories For the last month, I actually felt for Lee Reed - that he got cut out of the last "search", that he takes all of this flack for hiring Ewing, which he had no agency or power over, that he probably didn't deserve. This really wiped that all away. My concern is that we have reached a level of apathy where few care enough to protest.

the one thing that is crystal clear after this year - we dont have the talent on our roster to compete in a more competitve BE (Uconn's resurgence is having an impact on the conference as is Marquette's improvement with a young roster). GU is way behind on talent. that has to be corrected (and we are losing our best player - Carey. ) we have 1 decent player signed for next season (other than Aminu - this most recent class is very mediocre). we are weak at the 5 and pg with no consistent 3 pt threat next season. So, unless PE has some true success in bringing in talented transfers (which is theoretically possible anyway) we will most assuredly be at or near bottum of conference next year. the fact that Reed (and he didnt do that on his own initiative) issued that statement - probably means EWing is staying. regardless, hes a lame duck next season (anyone with half a brain knows that). its all going to make his recruiting job that much harder. this is so typical of GU under Degoia. it stands to reason the extension did happen and DeGoia and Reed cant absorb another HC buyout. what a mess. the rest of the BE is pretty happy with Reed's endorsement of Ewing. at least somebody is pleased

Perhaps I am being too literal-minded, but I still see both of these as more “weasely” than “we are committed.” In fact, one could call Reed’s language a statement of commitment rather than a vote of confidence.

Unfortunately, given how many other schools have already acted and planned for next steps, I'm not sure we even have 12 days to wait this time around before it's too late. Poor Barbara Barnes... Reed just tossing her name out there to take all the bullets after this cluster of an announcement.

So Reed and DeGioia are idiots for signing a multi-million dollar extension based on a 4 day BET winning stretch where key opponents had injured players. Now they are stuck. Nobody on the current board is willing to buy out Patrick. Patrick and Falk are holding the program hostage. As a player and agent who have made tens of millions off this program you've got to wonder how they both sleep at night watching this dumpster fire continue. Does Patrick really want to go down as the worst coach in Georgetown history? Perhaps the worst coach in Big East history? Next season will be too painful to watch. Empty arena, more season ticket cancellations, far lower student/alumni engagement, a handful of wins at best. I was looking froward to getting season tickets next year for a fresh start with a new coach and high hopes for the future. Time to go back into hibernation. He came as a shadow and amazingly, his shadow is still there long after his passing.

I need to know how I can "support the team and coaching staff". When they continue to play poorly, lose their remaining games, and the coach blames the players...what should I d0? Should I note that possibly ONE particular player had a good game and post how exciting that was? Should I claim the team is very young and will improve, when in fact it is not? Should I post and tell friends that the Hoyas are a team on the rise and there is every reason to expect they will return to greatness...and what do I say when they roll their eyes and tell me I am crazy? How many seniors are on the current team? The best player, Carey, and the best three-point shooter, Rice. What point are you trying to prove here?

I chuckled when I saw the comment about academic achievement. Ewing does not graduate our "student athletes." At this point the program will need to feel more pain before it can get better. I am hopeful that he cannot attract recruits, more players leave and we remain in last place for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, this is the only way to effectuate change. At best he will be able to have us rise to the top of the bottom third of the conference.

As I posted previously, it is inconceivable to me that at this point in Ewing’s coaching tenure he has a buyout that would prevent him from being fired. If after last year he got an extension or an increased buyout, that has to be laid at the feet of the AD. We had a losing season. There are no other realistic coaching options for Ewing. Why lock him up and lock us in?

It is embarrassing to Ewing and the school. I acknowledge that the statement certainly sounds like they intend to keep him as head coach, but I don't think that is guaranteed. This would not be the first time in sports that someone got a vote of confidence and then was let go a few days/weeks later. Let see what happens after the Big East tournament. If Ewing is staying and just changing some staff members, I would assume he will start that process quickly after they are eliminated from the BET, so he can go after assistant coach candidates before they make moves to other programs.
