There are two different lines of thinking of how this team will perform coming out of another prolonged COVID break. One is that the break couldn't have worked out better for us, allowing the team valuable practice time (although maybe not together?) and the chance to get healthier. The other is that the long layoff can't help but hurt our chances for consistency and that we are likely come out rusty and not firing on all cylinders, which is not something we can afford to against a top third of the conference type team with the way we've been playing this season. The answer's probably somewhere in between. I know they're completely different teams and this would not be an apples-to-apples comparison, but I thought it would be useful to look back at the last COVID break and see where the improvement may have initially occurred. Average Adj. Offense (pre-COVID): 102.1 Average Adj. Offense (first 3 games post-COVID): 123.5 Average Adj. Defense (pre-COVID): 95.5 Average Adj. Defense (first 3 games post-COVID): 104.6 Average TO% Offense (pre-COVID): 21.6 Average TO% Offense (first 3 games post-COVID): 16.7 Average Off. Reb% (pre-COVID): 29.6 Average Off. Reb% (first 3 games post-COVID): 38.6 Average FT Rate% (pre-COVID): 23.6 Average FT Rate% (first 3 games post-COVID): 30.7 Average TO% Defense (pre-COVID): 13.5 Average TO% Defense (first 3 games post-COVID): 16.1 Takeaways: Our defense propelled us during the second half of last season, but it was really our offense that got us out of the gate and jumpstarted the season. A nice healthy mix of taking better care of the basketball while being more aggressive in hitting the glass and getting to the line made a world of difference. Have to hope that the long layoff provided ample time to rest and refocus on getting back to an acceptable level of physicality that we are accustomed to seeing out of this program but have not seen yet to date on a consistent basis this season. I do think the same keys to success that drove last year's team apply here too. Much like last year's team, this is an excellent offensive rebounding (36th nationally)) and 3 point shooting (13th nationally) team we have here. Question is, will we take care of the ball well enough AND force enough turnovers where we're not starting at a huge FG attempt deficit each night? And will the defense, particularly in transition, improve enough to help us pick off a few extra wins against the top of the league? Last year's squad finished 44th in Adj Def, not sure this year's team (193rd currently) will get there, but there's a lot of room for improvement. Wiping away 4-6 freebie points a game because we jog back on D would be a nice start. Again, impossible to predict how this team will react coming out of the break, but I would hope to see significantly fewer execution-type mistakes than we saw for the first 5-6 weeks of the season. I don't know that there's another magical run through March for this group, but there certainly is a higher ceiling than what we've seen thus far, and my expectation is to start seeing steps towards approaching it. Given the injury issues, the pause is defiantly advantageous. It’s also one of the reasons we didn’t have enough players under Covid rules.

Who are our starters tomorrow against Marquette? I would guess Tim is still out and Harris is back so the typical Harris, Carey, Rice, Aminu and Wilson.

So Far This Season: So far, not so good this season for Georgetown. No one expected them to be world-beaters, but opening up the season with a Q4 loss at home to a KenPom #251 Dartmouth was a bad omen. After that horrible start, they won a pair of home games and went into the Wooden Legacy games on an upswing. That is, until they lost both games. One loss against a good San Diego State team and another against a not-great Saint Joseph’s squad. The next few games Georgetown all ended up exactly as expected. Beating teams they should, and losing to teams they shouldn’t beat. The one exception is their matchup against Syracuse. Georgetown came back to beat Syracuse 79-75 at home after being down 10 at half. This Syracuse team isn’t quite the Syracuse teams of old, that 2-3 zone is a little bit porous this season. It’s worth mentioning that Marquette transfer Symir Torrence ended up at Syracuse, and is doing basically the same stuff there that he did here. Anyways, this Georgetown team relies heavily on wonderkid Aminu Mohammed. Mohammed came in as a five star recruit and by a decent margin was the best recruit in the Big East. So far, he’s proving to be what everyone thought he could be. In that Syracuse game, he scored 12 points during a 21-9 run that got the Hoyas back into the game. He ended up with 23 points and 13 rebounds in that game, in addition to earning NCAA basketball Freshman of the Week honors for his performance. www.anonymouseagle.com/2022/1/7/22867154/marquette-golden-eagles-basketball-preview-georgetown-hoyas-ewing-mohammed-harris

GAMEDAY!!!
It's been so long since last we met. Can't wait to see the guys back on the court, hopefully they are well rested and are ready to battle. Attack the basket, rebound the ball, and we can beat Marquette.
Go Hoyas!

This is one of those games where if we want to avoid last place we need to win. By probability it's one of our top 5 most winnable games. We have a couple of factors going for us. Marquette is coming off their best win of the year. Game to game reversion to the mean is real in college basketball. We are coming off the long layoff so we should have been studying and the coaches going over the game plan for weeks.
As for the game itself it will come down to their shooting and our rebounding. Aminu can only cover one of Lewis and Morsell at a time. This should be a game Dante shines in. Kolek should pose little threat. It will be fun to watch the young centers go after each other. In the end I think this more than most comes down to a Kaiden win or lose game. If he's off who does he guard? He will make Lewis a lot of money if he is on him. I almost think we have to give Aminu the Lewis assignment and hope Dante can pester Morsell. Of course if Morsell starts backing him down that will be the end of that. If that happens put Aminu on Morsell and see what Billingsley can do with Lewis. If he is healthy Kobe could provide some good defensive minutes tonight. If you are looking for the potential career night from 3 guy it's Greg Elliot although if he tops his UCLA performance the game is over anyways.

Well without Carey everyone else has to step up and hopefully someone can hit the 3 besides the streaky Rice.

Starting with really nice motion play run really well, that hasn't happened prior to today.
Aminu then had a disaster defensive possession followed by horrible shot selection and got blocked. Helll get there.

Our defense looks solid, Marquette is just moving the ball well. Definitely worked on Offense during the break, they guys are running sets well...just need to finish.

Helll get there. For an NBA type talent he gets blocked a lot more than most players. If I was a scout that would be concerning for the next level.

We seem to be a step slow. They are beating us down the court this year.
