Not sure if it’s been mentioned here or in other game threads, but this is the first year where it seems like the staff has a real plan for baseline out of bounds plays. Maybe because this year’s team is more guard and wing driven. I have no issue with misses on open 3s from pin downs or 2nd screens from baseline out of bounds plays. That’s good execution when it happens (of course better when the shot falls).

I just finished this game off DVR, as I wasn't able to watch before now. Overall, it was great to win another game. Some quick thoughts:
The Positive
- Kaiden Rice. As I said in my post after the American game, the key to Rice is making threes. If he does that, like he did in this game, he will be a big asset. But, if he doesn't, then he offers a lot less. In this game, Rice really brought it. Obviously, he's not going to shoot 70% every game from three, but we don't need that.
- Dante Harris. Good game overall, and super efficient. What's not to love?
- Tyler Beard. I thought Beard gave some really solid minutes in this game. We still haven't seen a lot of him but I think he will probably play a good bit this season.
- Aminu Mohammed. This guy is going to be really good, even if he's not fully there yet. His relentless motor and attacking is great. He's going to draw a TON of fouls, so he really needs to maximize his free throw percentage. I can recall a lot of games (especially in the latter JT3 years), where it was annoying when opposing teams would attack the basket, get tons of free throws, and beat us because they lived at the line. I think Aminu can do that for us. He only had one turnover in this game, which was nice. He was only 2-10 from the field, but the free throws kept his efficiency at a reasonable level.
The Less Positive.
Defense. On paper, our defense looks good since Siena shot so badly. But, anybody watching our defense closely in this game can see it was atrocious, and truly bad. We gave up so may open looks from three to Siena, and luckily they missed a ton. In my mind there are a few major problems, which others have pointed to:
(1) Positioning/Overhelping: We are definitely overhelping too much, but I think that's also because we aren't positioning ourselves in the right places. Just watch some of our possessions. Guys are routinely out of place, lose their man, and the the whole defense collapses. We need more communication and awareness. This is why the defense was better at the end of last year, and it's unfortunately mostly absent at the moment.
(2) Pick and Roll Defense: On a number of possessions, it seemed like our guys had no clue as to what was going on defense and had no idea what to do. Our guys need to communicate! If our guys are having trouble, I almost feel like it would be easier to always switch, as then our guys would at least know what they are doing. This MUST improve given how much pick and roll/pop we are going to see all year.
If you have the game on DVR and want to see some examples, look at the second half defensive possession starting about 9:45. I was going to try to describe it, but the possession is so horrendous, it's hard to do so. Two guys become wide open for threes (one never gets the ball). Also, see our defensive possession beginning at 8:10 in the second half. This is a good example of where Siena runs and pick and roll, and our defense utterly collapses.
I am not trying to be overdramatic, but if we defend like this against better shooting teams, we are going to get utterly destroyed from the three point line.
I actually thought our 2-3 zone, while needing a lot of work, didn't look horrible. Ewing is never going to play 2-3 exclusively, though, but in the modern game, it's arguably a better option, especially if we continue to bring in athletic/sizeable guys.

We left so many guys wide open it was crazy. That's unfortunately been a staple of our defense for a long time now....other than a nice stretch at the end of last year when things seemed to get better. Why we have so many guys out of position and then leave a guy with no one remotely close to him at the 3-point line so consistently is beyond me. There has to be a fix and we are going to need it pretty quickly. Sounds like SDSU is not a good shooting team, but there are some good ones coming up for sure. If Dartmouth can shred us from 3.....lots of other teams can too.

Dartmouth hit some difficult, contested 3s in that game. Even the ones that were open were mostly from a few feet behind the arc.

Players are still playing defense one on one instead of really working as a team. It's a really young squad, so there should be improvement. Though many of the issues are persistent. The biggest issue against Sienna wasn't open outside shooters, though. It was absolutely non-existent post defense. I don't know how that gets better -- I don't know if the raw material is there.

Yep, the only real hope in the short run is JBill. You can literally see the gears moving in Tim’s head as he’s making decisions. He’ll play faster with time, but not fast enough this season to stay out of foul trouble. Ryan is also lost and slow def at this point, but has higher upside. And Wilson, whew - he’s reed thin. Nate Watson is going to put up 30-20 against this crew. JBill becoming a hardhat 20 mpg guy at PF is the only thing likely to keep us from getting absolutely ravaged inside. Kelly was such a loss! It can’t be overstated. He would have led this team in scoring and rebounding - take it to the bank. Let that sink in. 14/15 ppg and 7 rpg left with him.
