Riley had left several years before Thompson retired. Riley had a position at Gonzaga College High School for a while. His primary duty was not coaching basketball,. Riley left after graduating but rejoined the staff in 1982 and stayed on through Esherick's tenure. Riley and fellow classmate Craig Esherick joined the staff of John Thompson in 1982 following the departures of Bill Stein and Eddie Meyers. Over 17 years under Thompson and five under Esherick, Riley was the defensive architect of the Hoyas through its most productive era. Riley's 22 years is the longest tenure of any assistant coach in Georgetown basketball history. www.hoyabasketball.com/players/m_riley.htmRiley went on to serve as an assistant basketball coach at Georgetown University from 1983 to 2004. While at Georgetown, Riley coached the Hoyas to six Big East Conference Championships, four Big East Tournament Championships, two Final Fours, and the 1984 National Championship. He also served as the academic coordinator during his tenure at Georgetown. www.udcfirebirds.com/information/directory/bios/riley_mike?view=bio

I often wondered what happened to Mike Riley. If he was an architect of the Hoya defense in the Hoya glory years, then he would be an asset for Ewing's defense as would Gene Smith. It has been the Hoya guards mostly who have been lacking in defensive prowess in the recent years. The press utilized by the current staff is not an aggressive press like the JT2 defense of old. The press trap is not used much at all. I have always been impressed with the Syracuse trap in the corners when they press. Their trap always seems to be natural or second nature to the players although they don't play man-to-man defense. It would seem Orr would be able to teach this also. I think it is noteworthy that of the high profile players that jumped ship on Ewing (Mac, Akinjo and LaBlanc), Two (Mac and Akinjo will be playing for a different coach next year and the third, LaBlanc's coach was heavily envvoled in the coaching scandal that proved fatal for Miller. Ewing asked these players to help him to restore the Hoyas to a national power, their personal goals outweighed Ewing's dream however. Let's hope Aminu, Beard, Riley, Bellingsley and ?? will share his dream.

Mike Riley has been the head basketball coach at the University of the District of Columbia since June 2013; the Firebirds did not compete last season due to COVID-19.

Mike is the oldest former player in the John Thompson era. He graduated from Cardozo in 1971 and was in the Navy for three years before Thompson recruited him for the 1974-75 season.

Will do a great job in Cincinnati before replacing Hubert Davis in a few years.

Hell of a daggar for that program. And a big get for Stubblefield, DePaul and the BEast by extension. Were his staff to pull that program out of the basement’s basement, they’ll write books about it.
