Texas is a weird place.
Has Texas ever won a National title in basketball?
How many Final Fours in the last 50 years?

They fired Rick Barnes.
You would think they were Kansas or Kentucky or Duke or UNC.
Beard is definitely going to earn his money under that pressure cooker.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma, Bama, Clemson are doing what Texas thinks they can do with ease. Mack Brown is doing just fine at UNC too.

Hubert Davis taking over UNC. I know nothing about Davis as a coach. Any thoughts? It feels a bit Matt Daugherty to me -- keep it in the family with an uninspiring name that will do ok just cuz its UNC. I just don't see how he'd get young players excited when he seems so milquetoast himself. I may be being incredibly unkind to Davis' ability as a coach, though.

Daugherty (Brad) does NASCAR. Davis has been the assistant there for 9 years. I would think he was involved with recruiting. He was an analyst for ESPN. I thought he was solid. Doherty was fiery and bombed (no pun intended). Different personality and styles can work.

There was no question that UNC was going to keep it in the family, and Hubert Davis has been an assistant on Roy Williams's staff for nine seasons. I'd have to assume that he had significant involvement in recruiting prospective scholar-athletes, and it's difficult to say that he hasn't paid some dues along the way. So, while his selection may appear unusual at the outset, it actually makes some sense; unlike Patrick Ewing, he won't have to come up to speed on the peculiarities of the college game. We'll now see how he proceeds/succeeds as the head guy.

Dohrrety actually had some success as a head coach at Norte Dame but the UNC job was too early for him. Wasn’t ready for it. I always felt that Hubert should have stayed on Game Day. He had a good thing going there. He’s never been a leader/charismatic type but he’s a very hard worker.l and cerebral. I guess they’ll give him a shot and see what happens. There really isn’t anyone else available now. Beard and Moser were probably the two hot coaches and they missed the boat on those two.

Doherty also recruited the core talent for Roy's first championship at UNC.

If I had to compare Hubert to someone it would be Lenny Wilkins

Hubert Davis is 51 this year and has never coached in the pros or college. Wes Miller is 38, with five 20-win seasons at UNCG. Miller has that Roy Williams style about him and could have been the coach for 20+ years at Chapel Hill, and may well still, but Hubert was next in line, which is a big deal there.
The last UNC coach out of the family was Frank McGuire (1952-61), given that Dean Smith had been an assistant at UNC before getting the job.

Yeah I saw this as a Hubert, Wes and King Rice as the only people who were gonna get that job.

Where has “keeping it in the family” by promoting a career assistant worked at a big time program? At North Carolina, where Bill Guthridge went to 2 final fours
