Bump re the looming coaching change at DeMatha. Would've been a no brainer add to our staff. Also I figure that Pat would know he was looking for a job, if he was.

This isn't DeMatha looking to change, but Virginia Tech needing to drastically improve recruiting. Jones has been really good at pulling in talent from around the area to DeMatha. Jones has pulled a few transfer players into DeMatha after they already were playing with other WCAC teams in summer league.
But, as stated, nothing is confirmed nor official yet.

There's alot to be said for a hire that could help the Hoyas retain more local talent, but ultimately it's Ewing's job on the line and he has to choose who is on his staff. One consideration is that a strong recruiter with local ties may be more effective luring kids who want to get away from home to a school that is in the region (or elsewhere) than if he was trying to recruit them to stay locally.

I just don't see it. Also, Jones is a very good coach. It just helps that he is deeply embedded in the Nike/USA Basketball world, so he's not only a DC area expert.

I feel like not getting Jones is a major mistake by the program.

Virginia Tech has been struggling recruiting for the last few years.
From the sounds of it it wasn't about Jones looking to leave but Tech needing serious help.
Like Problem of Dog says, Jones reach for talent goes well beyond DC and the DMV. But, he knows the DC and DMV players really well and few players want to stay in the area and Tech and UVA are far enough away to be "away". There are quite a few local players who play D1 outside the area who had Maryland and/or Georgetown as their favorite school growing up. The received the local offer, but they really wanted to get out of town for college and see a bit more of the world.
As much as it would be nice to dream and think we could keep local guys local and playing at Georgetown, the reality is there is a lot more top talent outside of the DVM who wants to come to here and play. The DMV is stacked with talented players, but is is a small slice of everywhere. After this year with Georgetown winning the BET and the attention the program is getting and the solid incoming freshman class, Georgetown and Ewing are in a good spot.

Jones was at GW when I was at GW. Remember when they went to the final four? He and Yinka Dare led the team to the Sweet 16 in 93

Jones didn't play at GW and I'm not sure what Final Four you are referencing. As you say, GW did reach the Sweet Sixteen in 1993. (After graduating from DeMatha in 1991, Mike Jones attended Old Dominion University where he played for Oliver Purnell and Jeff Capel.)

I would say the program is in a good spot, but not in a solid good spot. Sort of at a crossroads… will the trajectory be up or will a bad season spin us down? Need a good season AND a very good recruiting class for 22.

I worry less about ‘22 recruiting as the transfer market is now a viable option.

GW had a guy named Jones on their team back then from Dematha and I thought it was Mike Jones. Let me see if I can find their roster to see what was his first name. I thought it was Mike but I could be wrong.

Sorry it was Vaughn Jones not Mike Jones and Kwame Evans along with Yinka Dare that led the team to the sweet 16. Vaughn Jones played at Dematha. As far at the final four statement, that should have been edited out to read Sweet Sixteen.

That team was stacked and would've made noise in the tourney but they lost in the conference finals to JMU on a buzzer beater. They had Jones, Odell Hodge, Kevin Swann and Petey Sessoms. They beat UVA at the Scope in Norfolk. If you are from Hampton Roads and in your 40s or older you know these names.

I ain't gonna lie..my memory of those days are so foggy but I vaguely remember that Odell name. Well at least it stands out in my foggy memory for some reason.
