I just want to see Greg and Josh continue to get more minutes. Both guys have been great

This isn't meant to call you out. You are a respected member on here but why do you "hate to do this"? Aren't we all here in hopes that the Hoyas win the most games? If that is the lineup that makes us the best then why hate it? Good question. I am just conscious of being too reactive by inserting Malinowski after one big game and sitting two starters coming back from injuries. The optics of my post aren’t great. Just think that at this point, Malinowski does more things well and provides more balance for us than Mac does at the moment. As for Mourning....I am not sure there is even an argument for him to get his starting spot back in the rotation. I don't really think it matters who starts. Fans spend too much time worrying over starting line-ups and changing them after one bad or good game. As long Malanowski, Akinjo, Mac, Govan and Leblanc get starter minutes (not necessarily together) with other plays having strong supporting roles, I don't really care which five start the game. And no one on the roster should either.

I'd leave Mac as the starter but shorten the rotation. I'd make it a straight 8 man rotation in the 1st half (barring foul trouble, etc.) Akinjo Mac Pickett Leblanc Govan Under 12: Malinowski for Pickett. Blair for Mac. Mourning for Leblanc. I don't really care about starters at all; I don't think it is all that relevant. That said, shortening the rotation is an interesting discussion. About a week ago, I thought our best shot was getting the rotation as small as possible -- going 7 man with starters (w/ JL and not TM) + GM + "backup center" ... whoever that might end up being. Basically, use Greg to back up most of the rest of the lineup with Mac playing some 1 and Pickett rolling down to PF at times. But I'm not sure that's right. Everyone on the team is too inconsistent right now; I think the team needs to ride the hot hand more, and good games by Blair, Carter looking pretty good, some better play by Kaleb have me re-assessing. Where I do think we need to shorten is minimizing the bench bigs' time ... or said another way, minimizing the time Trey Mourning plays. I think he and Carter should be stuck fighting for backup Govan minutes and that we should play smaller every minute possible. The #1 reason our defense was good today because we had an energized Jessie playing 34 minutes, lots of LeBlanc minutes, and no Mourning minutes. There was lots of effort by everyone, from what I saw, but Mourning - Govan has been an issue down low all year defensively ... and only one of those two is a tremendous offensive asset.

Appreciate that you recognize the optics of your comments about changing the starting lineup. While I agree with some of your reasons for a change, I disagree overall. From a coaching perspective, once you decide to start a freshmen it's extremely difficult to pull them from the starting lineup outside of extreme struggles. Mac does a lot of things well and his ability to finish at the rim through contact is tremendous. Mac is an explosive scorer who has made tremendous progress in his 12 games in college. You can't in any circumstance bench a freshmen that's playing well because of a short term injury. Especially not one who's last game he played in scored 38 points... I'm sure Malinowski will be in the most important lineup, the one thats finishing close games...

Tough decision for Ewing with the starting line-up. I know many people don't think it means anything, but it matters to the players. Can inserting Greg for Pickett work with Mac and Akinjo as starting guards? Although I am skeptical it will work defensively, I am very open to trying it out. I would prefer Mac be the 6th man and allowed to do what he does best with the second team, but somehow, I just do not see Ewing essentially benching Mac. That said, for the next 3.5 years Mac and Akinjo (two ball dominant guards) must learn to play together, period.

Malinowski is a 5th year senior who's extremely intelligent, skilled, with sneaky athleticism but doesn't have the athleticism and upside that McClung a freshman has. Coach Ewing is building something that he wants to last past this season. He's trying to balance current and longer-term success. Malinowski is playing a perfect role as the insurance policy...

If all that matters is player perception -- and I can't say I disagree with that in the big picture sense -- I don't think changing the lineup right now in regards to Mac and Pickett has a ton of upside here.

Mac is and will be a big part of this year's team but seeing the way the offense/defense has clicked in these past two games makes it a pretty easy choice in my view...

Pat's playing the players that are doing the best that game. He's playing the guys who match up well and create problems for the opponent. Tonight it was reg in scoring and the Mosely/Blair combo defending Baldwin. He's never going to have a set rotation, he's going to play the guys that fit that day the best whether that's offense or defense. Blair and Malinowski rebounded well and closed out solid defensive possessions, so they played. Pickett was solid defensively against CJ Williams last game so he played a lot then. No need for a set unit each game.

This isn't a 1 game fluke. He's a willing passer and has the highest basketball IQ on the team. He may not have the athletic ability of some others but his smarts make up for it. He may be a "glue guy" (others term not mine) but he's the type of player this team desperately needed. The team is better when he's on he floor. Especially when he replaces one of the ball stoppers.

It really depends on the player...it only may act to further drive Mac and he might be instant offense off the bench. Pulling someone like Jamarko and having him come off the bench could really mess with his head. Really depends on the player...hard to make blanket statements.

As well as the team played against Howard is hard to guage anything from that game. Tonight the team played well via a great game plan and Malinowski stepped up like the insurance policy he is. Does he deserve a lot more minutes...absolutely, but replacing McClung in the starting lineup when his last appearance he scored 38 is ridiculous. Coach Ewing had already began to stagger McClung and Akinjo's minutes. Probably continues that tactic even more if Malinowski can continue to perform at a high level. Malinowski gives Coach Ewing and the staff tremendous flexibility while also allowing the freshmen to grow together...

McClung a freshmen scored 38 points in his last time on the floor which was his 12th game in college. I love Malinowski but he's a 5th year senior who had a timely career night of 26 in his 109th college game. I love Malinowski and his outstanding bball IQ but he was probably the 5th or 6th person on Butler's scouting report. Coach Ewing is trying to build a program that Akinjo and McClung are key figures. People on here gotta stop being prisoners of the moment...

I thought Jamorko played one helluva defensive game and the team defense was definitely one of the better games this season. The team is growing together. I believe Grayson Carter is playing backup center pretty well and he is the least experience considering playing time.
BTW what is the medical problem with Trey Mourning?
Concussion protocol.--Admin

I agree with EtomicB comments here, the five that started these last two games should be the starting lineup moving forward. It’s about the five man unit that fit together the best. Mac should be subbing in for Akinjo (as backup PG) so that we always have a guard that can penetrate and make something happen. I like the minutes distribution from tonight as the model for moving forward with Mac carving out 15 min (from Akinjo, mosely, Blair). Mourning takes Carter’s backup C minutes and that’s it.

Gotta love knee jerk reactions from fans after one good game. The Lakers played much better in the Christmas game against the Warriors when Lebron was off the floor vs on it. Perhaps when he comes back from injury they should consider moving him to the bench as well? The team certainly played well tonight, but how often are you expecting a career 6.5 ppg scorer from William & Mary to give you 26 pts? Most nights, even as a starter, he's probably going to give you 6-10 points or so, and an 8 point win like this is suddenly an 8 point loss. I won't argue with consistency, maybe Mac misses 4 or 5 more games with the ankle injury and the current starting 5 wins every game, at that point, sure this is a conversation to entertain. One game on the other hand is just that, one game. Please don't bring the Howard game into it... that was the weakest team along with MD Eastern Shore that Georgetown played all year. Even this Butler team is not exactly setting the hoops world on fire... they're coming off a 34 point loss to Florida for christ's sake. The fickle nature of some fans is unreal. Mac drops 38 and he's the next AI and the future of Georgetown basketball. Misses 2 games with injury which the team wins and suddenly the team is pretty much better off without him. I'm curious... if he misses 3 more games and the team gets blown out in all of them, should he still come off the bench or get his starting spot back when he returns? Or on the flip side, what if he comes off the bench in the next 3 games and the team gets blown out in all of them? Should he be removed from the rotation all together since clearly he must be the reason for the losses, or does he keep his "15 minutes" off the bench?
