Anxious to see if we can step it up against a major conference opponent. Cut down on the forced passes and the rushed shots.

Illinois has only played one game so far and they beat Evansville 99-60. Just taking a look at their roster and the box score from that game it is clear Govan will be the biggest player on the floor again with the only player on Illinois over 6'6 who got serious minutes being a freshman at 6'9".
This will be a great test for Mac, Akinjo and Blair on the perimeter because Illinois is loaded with talented guards including a big time freshman talent Dosunmu and their senior leader Aaron Jordan. Pickett seems like he should have his run of the wing and I don't see who they possibly have to matchup with him. We might not see very much of Trey Mourning in this one and instead see more of Pickett/Leblanc as the "4".

Fingers and Toes crossed but it will be a very tall order. I remain undaunted and even if they lose, the ship will be righted eventually for a good season 9-9 in the BE or better!

Coach said Jagan will be available for Tuesday's game. We'll need him to help guard Illinois guard heavy lineup.

I was not able to watch yesterday's game, other than some highlights. Clearly, the team has yet to gel and has a long way to go. However, there is also a LOT of talent. Jessie and Jamorko are both legit three point shooters. Akinjo had some beautiful passes and assists. LeBlanc is the real deal, even if only a frosh. We know the D isn't remotely where it needs to be, but there are quick and aggressive kids on the team who can develop.
This season is going to depend on Coach. A chance for him to show everyone how effective he can be - not just at increasing the efficiency of individual players like Jessie, MD, Dickerson and Pickett last year - to name a few, but to build a cohesive team out of the current roster. OK, if you don't mind a few cliches and bromides... Rome Wasn't Built in a Day. Slow and steady wins the race. and this chestnut: "Patience, grasshopper".
All apply. We all want to see massive progress over last year and we want to see it right out of the gate. That isn't happening. But give these kids some time. Lots of talent on the floor. I am betting on Pat - I think Coach can bring this team along over the course of the season.

I thought Malinowski would be playing more (relative to Mac), just given we have a PG who can set up shooters, he's experienced, and we need shooting. This guy held down 20min per game and performed well, and has 3 years experience and one redshirt year. Do you think this is more of a reflection Ewing knows he can go to him if he needs to, and is trying to get the FROSH game minutes as much as possible (and also looking towards the future)?

Feels almost like they got collectively hot vs Xavier to push them. That Xavier team is good though.

Malinowski isn't much of a ballhandler. I think that's limiting him -- his turnovers have come with some pretty simple perimeter pressure. Mac is essentially the backup PG at this point. Malinowski isn't bringing much other than shooting.

Malinowski isn't bringing much other than shooting. Nothing I've seen in Kenner or the season leads me to believe he's any good. He has a decent physique and movement but seems just a step slow on everything. Like based on his physique he shouldn't be slow but he doesn't have that burst of acceleration to the ball.

I thought Malinowski looked pretty sound handling/bringing the ball up court...was somewhat pleasantly surprised...don't recall him taking any shots but I think he's a pretty good shooter...

Malinowski, Pickett, Mosely and McClung can all dribble the ball up court with no pressure. As soon as they are tightly guarded, they pick up the ball and look to pass. Akinjo on the other hand, can bring it up court while hounded. I hope Mac can get there over time.

I agree. 3 rbs in 6 mins. His only mistake was an inbounding time violation, but that’s more lack of movement by teammates, lack of synch, new teammates and lack of a structured play for those situations. The coaching staff needs to work it. He was taken out shortly there after.

FYI re TV coverage... Although GUHoyas.com lists the Big Ten Network for this game, the Illinois website, the Fox Sports website, and my Fios guide all have Fox Sports 1 carrying it instead.

#1 is their best player slow him down and you have a shot. They have a lot of guards he's the only natural playmaker.

Need to pound it inside to Jessie. They don't have the size to deal with our interior play. Just need to make sure to cover their 3s a bit better than we did last game. I expect our guys to raise their game to the level of competition.

James Akinjo (FR) - Trent Frazier (Soph) Mac McClung (FR) -Ayo Dosunmu (FR) Pickett (Soph)- Aaron Jordan (Sr) Mourning( Sr) - Kipper Nichols (Jr) Jessie (Sr) - Giorgi Bezhanishvili (FR)
Ayo is terrific on both ends but he's not really known for outside shooting. His game is more predicated on using his size and skill to get to the rim or midrange. Frazier and Jordan will let it fly, and they also like to run pick and pop with their big, Giorgi. Nichols is just a solid player all around that gives you a little bit of everything.
The Juco guard Feliz (6th man) is crafty but not really going to take a lot of shots from 3 either. He finished well at the rim in his first 2 games (1 game 1 exhibition) and he has a knack for drawing fouls.
You need Pickett and Jessie to play well obviously. If that happens a lot of this will come down to James vs Trent Frazier and whoever gets the better of that matchup. That's probably a lot to ask of a Freshman in his 3rd game on the road. The're a lot of similarities to the way they play but Feliz is more experienced obviously. If it's even it's probably advantage Illinois.
They like to pressure the ball and they have physical wings so you're going to have to limit turnovers to have a shot.

Watched that Illinois highlight video. Granted its a highlight video but those guards look very impressive. Plus those 3 point shooters were hitting from way downtown. Yes this is a very real test for the Hoyas.

Yes this is a very real test for the Hoyas. And one that, from your prediction, you think we will fail “bigly”. I’m concerned with stopping the penetration. In both games, there were some drives that were not challenged all the way to the rim. With no real size to challenge him, we will need Govan to take over on both sides, without the careless fouls away from the basket.
