"They like to pressure the ball...physical wings...limit turnovers"...this is a big concern to me...their coach likes this aggressive style (I recall them beating the daylights out of us in the Island tourney a couple of years ago)...this pressure style plays to getting the crowd into a frenzy and taking advantage of our young guards...bully ball...we need to avoid getting trapped in the backcourt and forcing our way out by over dribbling when double teamed...part of the solution to me is to have a release man (possibly two) to get the ball to and let the guards race by and get it back and/or beat their defender down court...one "release man" could be set up at the foul line/top of the key on their end when we're bringing the ball in after they score (Kaleb, Malinowski, LeBlanc)...another "release man" could be set up between the foul line and half court on our end (Govan, Mourning, LeBlanc)...these "release" (or outlet) men" make themselves available to receive passes then handoff or pass it down court...they act as stabilizers and take the initial pressure off the guards and help prevent them from getting trapped and trying to do too much with one on one dribbling...pass it and then get it back on the move..."in the same token" (one of Big John's old favorite sayings) we need to selectively press them and especially trap/double team them in the half court ("teams that press don't like to be pressed"...but we can't let them beat the press and score in transition, so we have to get back into our half court D very quickly...we need to run at every opportunity/attack and convert at the foul line...in the half court we've got to have quick (not hurried) ball movement and shoot "IN THE FLOW"...these shots come in the RHYTHM of the O after 3-4 crisp passes, not just bringing it down and chucking it up...we have to play better D on the inside and avoid letting them get to the hoop for easy layups, which they will surely try to do to get Govan in foul trouble...also, we need to close out on the shooters off screens much quicker/tighter...no more guys going off on 3s...everybody rebound! Who was the head basketball coach of Illinois during this game?

Prediction from Myron Medcalf, ESPN:
Patrick Ewing seems more comfortable entering his second year as the head coach of his alma mater. And Jessie Govan, through the team's first two games, is justifying the preseason hype. But Illinois believes freshman Ayo Dosunmu, who had 18 points in a season-opening win over Evansville, could lead a reboot of the program under Brad Underwood.
Prediction: Illinois 78, Georgetown 72

Pound it inside. Own the boards. Pressure shooters.
The real key will be how well our guards can feed Jessie. At this point, I'm hoping Illinois over-helps on Jessie and leaves Jamarko and Blair open on the wings, Mourning and Leblanc open on the opposite block, and driving lanes open for James and Mac.

A couple of thoughts....
People keep saying pound it inside. I would say it differently...leverage Jesse. He will be guarded by a freshman. If we feed him at all his favorite spots including outside the arc, he should have a big game. Hopefully we can get their FR big Giorgi in foul trouble and put them on their heals.
Illinois wants to play up tempo. From listening to their coach, they track the number of possessions they have that take less than 7 seconds. They are going to try to turn us over. I think they will have some success with our freshman backcourt, but I think an broken game might be just want Mac needs to build his confidence. If it becomes a bit of a track meet, then I like him to score 10+ for the 1st time in his career and maybe draw a few fouls going to the basket.
I hope that we see more of a visible presence from Pickett with something like a 20% usage rate up from 13% season to date.
I think we will see the bench shorten, I speculate that we see...
Govan, Pickett Mac, Akinjo, Mourning - 25-32 minutes Leblanc & Blair. 15-20 minutes Johnson and Mosely < 10 minutes
Looking forward to seeing this team play in a hostile arena. I am curious to see if there is any bad blood remaining between Akinjo and Ayo and how much visibile attitude Akinjo puts off.
Hoping the good guys win but Ken Pom’s 39% win probability sounds about right.

Is this game on FS1 in the DC area.
My schedule has that time slot as unavailable in the TV guide. I hope it's not moved to MASN or something because it's local.

I would be shocked if Mosely plays less than 10 minutes if he is healthy. If they press us, I could see Mosely, Akinjo playing more than Mosely Mac. If Johnson is not scoring he should sit.

Limiting turnovers and defending 3-Point shooters will be 2 areas of the game I am keen to watch all year, especially because the Hoyas are starting 2 as yet unproven freshman guards who are short-ish.
Some Big East regular season statistics (18 games) from the 2017-2018 season to drive home the point:
Turnovers 283, 15.7/game (10th out of 10 teams) Opponent Turnovers 216, 12/game (6th out of 10 teams) Turnover Differential 67, +3.7/game (10th out of 10 teams)
Opponent 3FG% .386 (9th out of 10 teams) Opponent 3FG Made 177 (9th out of 10 teams) 3FG% .372 (3rd out of 10 teams) 3FG Made 139 (6th out of 10 teams) 3FG Made differential -38, -2.1/game (9th out of 10 teams)

LeBlanc is clearly better than Mourning, and has more potential, and if either of them should be getting 25-32 minutes, it is LeBlanc, not Mourning. Mourning's problem is that he isn't shooting well, he defends badly, and he turns it over a lot, which is not a recipe for success.

I'd also offer that LeBlanc matches up particularly well against this Illinois team. I'm not sure who Mourning would guard (Govan will have enough trouble on the defensive side of the ball). LeBlanc's a better fit for the types of athletes Illinois will put on the floor.

I'm thinking we will see more Jagan, Blair and Kaleb then we saw in games 1 and 2. There will be more of a small ball lineup to matchup which will mean less Mourning and then I think perimeter defense will lead to less Mac this game. Akinjo up against a 5 star freshman guard might just lead to a big time performance from our point guard tonight.

If McClung plays m,ore than Blair and Mosley I think it is a mistake. McClung is very athletic and incident but stil is learning. I would prefer to see him brought along more slowly and not paired with Akinjo.

What Mourning has done better (or more) than anyone else this year has been entry passes to the post. I like Leblanc too, but given that PE didn’t replace Mourning in the starting line up after the first game, I am guessing we will see status quo. I think a track meet favors Leblanc’s skills over Mourning’s tonight.

Hoping to see more Blair and LeBlanc tonight and less of the two freshmen on the floor together. Also hope Mosley is back. I know that Mourning is not going to be the superstar his father was, but love this kid's effort and enthusiasm on and off the floor. I want the two freshmen on the floor as much as possible, since they are our best guards currently, and they are the future of the program. I don't care if they turn the ball over 150 times and miss every shot they take. They are our most talented guards by a country mile, and they need all the experience they can get

I want both playing 30 minutes a night. Jagan and Juggy are clear backups with very little upside. You don't play clear backups over potential star talent.

Illinois is favored by 8. They opened as 6 point favorites and immediately got bet up to 8 which is usually a bad sign.
I am very interested in how Pat handles this game. I don't feel like the current lineups and rotations he has been using are right for this game. This is a game that I feel Mosely (assuming healthy) and LeBlanc should play a lot based on their skill sets (ball handling and switching defense). If we try to run with them it will likely lead to a bunch of turnovers for us and I think we get blown out. I would like to see us throw some zone at them to see if they can shoot us out of it especially when the not so great defenders are out there. If anything it should slow the game down. If the offense doesn't run through Jessie almost every time down it will be disappointing. There should be plenty of open 3's if he does and hopefully we can knock them down. It would be a great night to get hot from 3. Trey should get whatever backup C minutes there are tonight and he could do well in that roll as he is a capable passer and should have a small guy on him. Here is hoping we get a big win. It could do wonders for the season.

Illini are picked to finish 2nd to last in B1G. We are acting like they are world beaters based on beating Evansville. It sounds like a tough match up for both teams so it really comes down to how we defend tonight.

I totally agree with Daytona and HoyaSaxa2003. Play our best players. That's already James, Mac, Jessie and Jamorko. Substitute way more LeBlanc for Mourning and we have something. Jagan could be a good sub for defense especially with Illinois rolling out 3 guards, but he's not better than Mac right now, imo, on entry passes or ballhandling. Mac had 4 assists last game, one a nice drop ahead for a transition bucket and the other a gorgeous entry to the post which Jessie sealed well. We saw little of that last year. This could be a tough game for Mourning if he's matched up with anyone but the center (as a breather to Jessie). LeBlanc can handle other guys off the bounce and is far more multi-dimensional than Mourning. We need our young guys to show some defensive tenacity and get out on offense for some easy hoops when we have numbers and size advantages. That is best accomplished with our more athletic lineups. Blair is a good sniper off the bench, but he's never impressed me with his defensive gifts. Not saying he's terrible, but he's not gifted in that way. This is a game to test our best lineup, not hide it! Let youth be served!

It is likely to come down to who values possessions and gets off the highest quality shots in the final 3-5 minutes. To that end, our frosh guards are untested and it might make for a painful ending, but we need to approach this game confidently and punch them in the mouth in the first 10 minutes.
