The one thing I don't get is people who say he wouldn't like the traveling for recruiting. He currently travels for 6 months of the year the 41 road games plus exhibitions plus playoff game and I always see him on the sidelines for summer league games. There might actually be less traveling in the new position. Well, for one thing he won't be travelling in a chartered jet which just might be a wee bit more comfortable than travelling commercially (even if first class).

I'm coming around on Ewing. Dude has coached 15 years in NBA. He wants a head coaching gig. He has to have a chip on his shoulder that he has gotten passed over a ton. I could def get behind an angry Ewing out to destroy everyone??? Yeap I could def get behind that. (I reserve the right to change my mind multiple times a day until we make the announcement. Then I will hopefully find multiple reasons to get excited about he new coach ) Also no way that Mullins exits the court under his own strength if he comes at Pat the way he came at JTIII... And yes, I'm still Editeded Mullins got to stay on the sidelines. The fact that he wasn't ejected was a travesty.

I'll take PE as long as he promises to wear a bowtie every game.

Are we sure GU coaches never travel by chartered jet when recruiting? I'm pretty certain that's the case given the cost factor alone. Flight time can cost $2000 to $5000 an hour. If anyone has contrary info please weigh in.

In order to recruit you have to drive from that airport maybe 2-3 hours to Podunk high, stay at the local Motel 6 and basically beg some clueless 18 year old and his overbearing parents to come to GU. Then drive back to the nearest airport and do it all over again for some goofball in East Bumpkinville. I just can't see PE doing that. Now maybe his fame will attract some top recruits but these kids and their folks want to be courted and they want the coach to show them he cares about their little baby. Just don't see it happening for PE.

I'm not sure that all the best candidates are in bumkinville. Getting the best talent out of NY, DC, Philly, Chicago, Miami, Detroit and Indianapolis would serve our program well. Having spent most of his life flying in and out of these cities whether on a chartered jet or in first class such trips will not be unfamiliar. Having an assistant schedule limousine rides to and from a recruit's parents home in a suburb should not be exceedingly difficult!

They are getting driven from airports via one driving service or another and staying in the nicest places locally. They may not have 5 star Ace hotels, but they certainly are slumming it in the Red Roof Inns these days. It's starting to become clear to me that Ewing is the best candidate out there right now. He might need a college learning curve, but he has a whole year of no expectations to learn.

In order to do the work necessary to do that he has to be hungry. And that means going to wherever the recruits are (okay some will be in major cities) schmooze parents and kids and grovel when necessary. I just don't see PE or any NBA Hall of famer doing that. And I bet when Coach K and Caliper started out they stayed at the Motel 6's and drove 3 or more hours in rental cars.

That's just not the reality of the sport anymore, coaches from high majors aren't staying in motel 6s and driving hours to see recruits high games. They aren't going to be discovering guys in high school games anymore either, which means any drives out to bumpkinville will be an infrequent sales pitch rather than a regular part of the job.

I had a conversation with a Division I basketball coach about Ewing and he stated something must be up since he has been a long assistant but has never had a head coaching job. Then I mentioned Patrick Ewing's rendezvous at the Gentlemen Club's and he responded back that would be enough to keep him out a head coaching job due to organizational embarrassment of an incident happening.

With all the dirtbags that go around the coaching carousel, that explanation is hard to swallow.. Err so to speak.

If The Big Fella does get the job, who should his assistants be?

I'm not saying PE would be going to high school games to "discover" players. I'm saying that somewhere during the recruiting effort he will have to go to a top prospects hometown, maybe watch him play at least once, and definitely have a sit down with his parents. This is a lot different kind of life than PE has experienced in the NBA since many of these recruits don't live in or near NBA cities and recruiting NBA players doesn't entail the begging, and downright demeaning, actions that go with recruiting top high school prospects. 6-7 years ago Jamie Dixon came to my small town to see a PA regional AAAA semi-final game. You would do this too if you were a young guy hoping to make a mark in college basketball and knowing that your future depended on how well you did at your new job as Hoya head coach. I just don't see PE bringing that fire to the job.
