I'm not sure why a STARTER would leave and lose a year. That kind of thing happens when the coach you love and sweat blood and tears for is fired and if that coach's dad leaves too. I understand that but I'm trying to remember when that has happened before. I know it has tho.

It has been detailed on the coaching search related threads, but again: 1. 1 NCAA in 10 years at high major schools. Yes there were some impediments - but 1 for 10 is not a good record, certainly raises doubts about ability to recruit and coach at that level; --- you're right. he was 31. 2. His early success at Harvard was based in significant part on convincing (forcing) the school to relax its admissions standards, coupled with pushing inherited players out the door; --- stop at "success"; did the students flunk out, pushing out in what fashion and for what specific reason? 3. The whiff of some recruiting improprieties, although no sanctions of any type. the "whiff" - can you be more specific - a whiff. lol. here's the key: "although no sanctions of any type" a whiff. try that in court. Can you provide more specific details / source? Everything you said was not fact based. As you well know, the details have been discussed by others earlier this week. The convenient contact with 2 recruits in a pickup game by a very-soon hired assistant. Amaker's convenient "bumping into" a recruit's parents in a grocery store. Team co-captains involved in a wider-spread academic cheating scandal (shades of Syracuse!). The "easing" of admission standards, convincing the administration to authorize grants, as opposed to just loans, to recruits, which other Ivy schools did not do. Not to mention bolting Seton Hall after assuring his players he was staying. Blatant sanctionable actions? No. Necessarily unique among coaches? No. An odd whiff? Yes And although he was 31 when he started at Seton Hall, he was 41 when he was fired as a failure at Michigan.

May have been empty gesture because not so good when they did it but self-sanction none the less

True, I should have said no NCAA imposed sanctions.

You've convinced me to not like him. Hey, he's not my choice as coach. I think he can succeed but maybe not right coach at this time for this program.

Like I said, there is a whiff that concerns me. And I am not overwhelmed by his body of work as a whole. But if he were to end up with the job, I would support him 100%, as I will whomever gets the job (well, unless it is Creepy - I kid, I kid).

If it's not Ewing, I think it will be Amaker or Dawkins for check the box reasons (moderate success at high academic schools, local ties, and good coaching tree pedigree). This is largely based on 2004 search and DeGoia statement.
Neither will be an upgrade over III IMHO.

I respect your opinion, but it's hard to look at the trajectory of the program and current personnel--discussed here ad nauseam--and think that. If it's in fact true, then the problems are systemic and no one will win. But Patrick is, without question, a pretty big gamble.

No way PE would work. We all agree that recruiting is key. Can you imagine that PE would be willing to travel all over the country kissing the butt of teenage recruits and their parents? You don't accomplish what PE has, and lived the kind of life he's lived the past 20 years, and seriously want to spend the later part of your life screwing around with high school phenoms, grumpy alumni, and blogging students. We need a young guy with fire in his gut. Don't have any names but you know the next young Pitino or Calipari, or Coach K is out there. Can't believe the University is looking to Tagliabue to just call PE and hand over the program. Anyone from the University could have done that.

I'm sorry, I missed the resume that showed Tagliabue had any ability to identify coaching talent. He's being brought on for optics and a PR/business perspective. Nothing more. If we are let Tagliabue evaluate basketball coaching descisons, the program is in far dire straights than an of use imagined.

Dawkins? Has his name surfaced? Not seriously, but in a few articles. If Dawkins is the choice, then we were definitely wrong in firing JT3. But, I don't think he'll be the choice.

I'm coming around on Ewing. Dude has coached 15 years in NBA. He wants a head coaching gig. He has to have a chip on his shoulder that he has gotten passed over a ton. I could def get behind an angry Ewing out to destroy everyone??? Yeap I could def get behind that. (I reserve the right to change my mind multiple times a day until we make the announcement. Then I will hopefully find multiple reasons to get excited about he new coach )

But there's always hope Lucy won't pull away the Big Fella's football this time.

Some putz complaining about Patrick Ewing's work ethic is absurd, but what do you expect from the boys of Bristol? Is he under the impression that Pat got great just cause he was huge or does he recognize all the hard work that was done to get to the Hall of Fame? Since then, PE has been trekking coast to coast as an NBA assistant, packing his oversized frame into a plane seat probably 125 or more days a year, not out of need but out of desire, hunger and WORK ETHIC. He may not have done the recruiting himself, but pretty sure Slo and Broadus could tee up a few closer moments for him and Pat casts one hell of a shadow in any recruit's living room. I don't know whether he does the Xs and Os part well himself, but he would not be an island and no doubt would get plenty of counseling on building a solid staff.
People forget what a player he was, offensively and defensively there is not a trick or skill that he didn't exhibit at some point or another. We would never have to worry about a big going soft to the rack again, or dumping out of the low post when they could dunk instead.
Only objection to PE is that the high roller seats would have to get periscopes to see the court around his monster presence. Not all in on him, but no question he gets my support if he wants it and I don't see any of the negatives that others candidates have, from demeanor issues like Creepy and the Hurleys to mixed results like Smart, Pitino and Amaker. At the very least, he tides us over till Jon Wallace is ready for his step:)

The one thing I don't get is people who say he wouldn't like the traveling for recruiting. He currently travels for 6 months of the year the 41 road games plus exhibitions plus playoff game and I always see him on the sidelines for summer league games. There might actually be less traveling in the new position.
